Ye kaafilaa hai pyaar ka chalta hi jaayegaa

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
And so, exactly a week ago, I get this email from Khyati ji. A quick reminder and a request – reminding me that the blog anniversary itself is approaching and that her request is for a special song and a write up from me. So Khyati ji, thanks for the reminder and the nudge for this write up. And I hope that you like this contribution.
Welcome all, to the anniversary celebration of this blog. Yesterday, 18th July, 2012, this blog completed 4 years of its existence. And today, the 19th July, we step into the fifth year of this wonderful musical journey. Over the last four years, what this blog has accomplished is definitely unparalleled in the annals of online music websites in the cyberspace. Some very rough calculations – 4 years and 6200+ songs; a rough average of 1500+ songs per year which computes to an average of 4 to 5 songs per day. 4 to 5 songs per day, every day – festivals, holidays, vacations, family affairs, whatever. It is an envious, nay, rather it is a mind boggling record. The song, complete with lyrics and a write up that gives a lot of details about the song, the film, the circumstances, the personal experience – the whole nine yards. Folks who contribute write ups will agree. The amount of time and effort it takes to prepare one write up – I think I need not say more.
The origins of this fabulous web site go way back into the online conversations between Atul ji and Raja ji. Having met (virtually) on a cricket blogging web site, and discovering a mutual passion for music of Hindi films, the discussions led to the outline of a web site that would present complete and authenticated details of Hindi film songs. What started off 4 years ago as “Atul Song-a-Day” website, this online resource has more than lived up to its original name. Rather that, it has doggedly gone way, way beyond the original intent discussed.
Dear Atul ji, words are not enough to appreciate, and to extol and celebrate this ongoing accomplishment. The amount of energy, dedication, consistency that is required day in and day out, is something beyond imagination, and can only be respected and looked up to.
A day around the end of September of 2010, while doing a search for details of a particular song, the google engine brought me a to a page from a blog that I had never seen before. Searches for songs and lyrics and related information usually used to bring up web sites like ‘earthmusic.net’, ‘lyrics.com’, ‘hindilyrics.net’, ‘smashits.com’ etc. That fateful day, the search brought up this blog as one of the first few items listed by the google engine. When I clicked on it and reached a page on this blog, my surprise and my jubilation knew no bounds, as I came to understand the content of this web site. Without any delay, I signed up for the email notifications. The confirmation sitting in my mailbox is dated 1st October, 2010, and the first email that I received from this blog is dated 2nd October, 2010. And the rest, for me, is history – history all of one year, eight months and nineteen days. But in reality, it seems as if I have been here, all my life. The song that comes to mind was posted here on 19th February, 2011 –“Pal Bhar Hi Ki Pehchan Mein Pardesi Sanam Se, Lagtaa Hai Ki Hum Jaante Hain Janam Janam Se”.
Yes, a wonderful, a very heartwarming and a very fulfilling association that seems to be existing for ages now. Being here has been a real adventure in the discovery of my own love and involvement with the Hindi film music. And the bonanza is the fact of meeting with and sharing with scores of like minded individuals, whose tastes and endeavors are similar, and together we complement each other’s quest for this wonderful art form. So many, just so many wonderful people I have come to know and be friends with, by just being on this blog. And I must acknowledge the wonderful camaraderie and the unfettered and open sharing that happens amongst all members / readers / contributors – dear Arun ji – our indispensable encyclopedia of Hindi films and music, Raja ji, Mem Didi, AK ji, Atif Bhai, Ava Suri ji, Bluefire ji, Boodehmiyan ji (where are you sir, we have not heard from you for ages), Chinmaya ji, Derubala ji, Dejavu007 (Pradeep Raghunathan ji, if you are reading this, please send me an email, we are missing you here on this blog), Gurcharan Sandhu ji, Gaddeswarup ji, KS Shenoy ji, Khwaja Sultan Ahmed ji, our very dear Khyati ji, Krishna Pillalamarri ji, of course, dear, dear Lalitha ji, Mani Menon ji, Nahm Didi, Nitin ji Shah, and ah, yes, Peevesie and Peevesie’s Mom, the very endearing Prakashchandra ji, dear Roos Ramdin (where are you Roos, have not heard from you in ages), and of course, Sadanand ji, Santosh Ojha ji (Santosh ji – awaiting your next write up, been a while), Sima ji, Shekhar Gupta ji, Suryakant ji, Tamanna ji, Rohit Aggarwal ji , Yamini ji, Zoher Gheewala ji, Vijay Kumar Gupta ji – and a few hundreds more. (I am unable to list all names for the reasons of space).
I sent in my first lyrics to Atul ji, very hesitantly on 30th Jan, 2011. And subsequently, equally hesitantly, I sent him a full write up on 18th February, 2011. And after that, it simply seems to have become a habit. More than reading the newspaper in the morning, it is more urgent to login and checkout the web page to find what new songs have been posted. And following up the posts on my Blackberry during the day time. And more often than not, sitting at my laptop and pounding away on the keyboard in the early hours of the morning, trying to complete a post to send to Atul ji – generally it happens at 2am or 3am local time (as is this one). I suggest to Atul ji, to put up a Statutory Warning on the home page – that the new visitors be aware that this website is intensely habit forming – enter at your own risk. 😀 😀
So, coming back to Khyati ji’s request, I immediately thought of this song. It has been sitting in my drafts box for some days now, as I was trying to make up my mind about the type of write up to go along with this. Khyati ji’s reminder made a connect in my mind. The thought process went over from the term ‘musical bandwagon’ that Atul ji loves to use, to the caravan of friendship and love that has come to symbolize the exchange and sharing amongst the folks on this blog. And voila. . .
The song is from the film ‘Lekh’ (1949). The film is from the banner of Liberty Art Productions, Bombay and is directed by G Rakesh. The star cast list includes Suraiyya, Sitara, Motilal, Ishu Jaagirdaar, Cuckoo, Anand Pal, Suraiyya Chaudhry, Sudhir, Gurudasram, Chamam Puri, Ameena Bai, Rekha, Sarita Veer, Kanwal, Vats, Pittoo, Atma Prakash etc. Coming to the music of this film – it has 15 songs, and three of them are already represented on this blog. This here is the fourth offering to make it here. The music composition is by Krishna Dayal, B.Sc. (Back in the forties, some of the film personalities had this yen for noting their qualifications also, along with their name, for listing in the credits). The lyrics for this film are shared amongst three poets. Namely Qamar Jalaalabaadi, Raghupat Rai, Amar N Khanna. This particular song is written by Qamar Jalaalabaadi. This singing voices – that of Mukesh and Asha Bhosle. Given that Asha ji’s career started in 1947-48, this might as well be the very first duet these two artists have performed together.
There is another very wonderful favorite ‘kaarwaan’ song that I often quote in my comments –“Ye Hansta Huaa Kaarwaan Zindagi Ki Na Poochho Chala Hai Kidhar” from film ‘Ek Jhalak’ (1957). Ah but, it is already posted. And I am glad to have found this song.
As I was doing the translation, the emotions expressed in this song seem to fit so well into the write up for today. That this caravan will continue forging ahead, and the exhortation that we need to celebrate and enjoy each day (each song) every day. That we will find the flavors of happiness and sadness, of meeting and parting. That here we can locate any emotion, any theme. And that there is a yearning to meet, pointing towards new friends.
And so, a very Happy Anniversary to all of us. And a very special felicitation for Atul ji, the mastermind and the driving force behind all activities on this blog. Wonderful endeavor, wonderful collection, wonderful value – all in all a wonderful preservation of history.
All the best, to all of us. Prosper, share pleasure, and enjoy.
And may this ‘kaafilaa’ continue to grow and move forward.
Amen.
ye kaafila hai pyaar ka chaltaa hi jaayega
jee bhar ke hans le gaa le ye din phir na aayegaa
This odyssey, of friendship and love
It’s journey will abound, forever
Have fun, enjoy
Have a hearty laugh
And sing a spirited song
For this (passing) day
Shall never return again
is kaafile ke saath hansi bhi hai ashq bhi
gaayega koi aur koi aansoo bahaayegaa
Happiness and sorrow, together
Accompany this cavalcade
Some lips will have a smile
And some eyes will have a tear
raahi guzar na jaayen mohabbat ke din kahin
aankhen taras rahin hain kab aankhen milaayegaa
O fellow traveler
Let not these days of tender affection
Pass by (in vain)
Eyes are yearning (for the familiar)
Waiting, for when the glances shall meet
is kaafile mein vasl bhi hai aur judaai bhi
tu jo bhi maang legaa tere paas aayega
A tryst (with the loved one)
And parting, a farewell
Abide together in this procession
Just express your desire
And it shall come to you

Congrats Atulji for entering the fifth year. It must be sheer grit and dogged perseverance and passion that makes you get up in the morning and pound away on the keyboard.
As for me it has been so addictive that I have to apportion the time (before and office hours) for devoting my time for the blog. There was a time when my business suffered because of the addiction. I am sure we all are sailing in the same boat trying not be carried away with strong musical stream and ensuring that we do not get drown in musical amrit manthan.
I also congratulate our fellow contributors and bloggers to make this blog mind blogging !!!

Congratulations. I found this blog only a few months ago and now I visit it twice or thrice a day. I find many songs here that I have not heard for forty, fifty years and many new ones. It helps in my old age passing everyday with a reminder of the past or some thing new. Many happy returns.

Sudhirji,
As usual, aap jo likhne mein maharathi ho, kitni khubsoorti se sab ko yaad karke sab ka dhanyawaad kar diya. 35 lyrics, 44 translations and 405 posts in just one year, eight months and nineteen days! Itni kam umra mein to bachha mama, papa, dada ke aage bol bhi nahin pata. Pata nahin ki meri ye samasya ka samadhaan koi kar paaye ga ya nahin. Sorry, kya karoon, ye meri aadat jo hai ki aisi masti mazak karoon. Bura mat lagana please. Aadmi apni aadat se kitna majboor hota hai ye to aap sab ne likha hai aur mahesoos bhi kiya hai ki after being aware of this Blog, how much addicted we all are to this blog. But unlike other harmful addiction, this is a best medicine for all of us. And Atulji being a doctor, writes prescriptions for all his “patients” with lots of patience and taking care of individual needs. Ab ye seva to koi nahin karega is zamane mein. I am proud to be part of his wagon. Thanks Atulji.

Fantastic write-up, Sudhirji. You’ve chronicled so beautifully your own introduction to this blog and how it has now totally become part of your system. Can’t agree more that it is very habit-forming – I also check it every single day.
And how nice that you have mentioned individually names of so many readers/contributors here. Indeed they play such a big part in carrying on the caravan. Like you (and Arunji above) have said, one of the biggest bonuses here is not just the song itself but also getting to know so many more like-minded, music lovers.
I must say I love Khyatiji’s comment too. She’s always cracking some joke or the other – and then saying “bura mat maan na”. 🙂 Is mein bhi ek ada hai, ek andaaz hai. I only want to tell her “Khyatiji, aap ke kisi baat ka koi bura nahin maanta…so please keep going”. 🙂
Thank you for this post, Sudhirji.
