Jeena to hai par ae dil kahaan

on:“Paanch Dushman”(1973), though a recent movie by the standards of this blog is an obscure movie. From the little that I know, this movie was produced and directed by Manu Narang. The movie had Manu Narang, Pran, Vinod Khanna, Prem Chopra. This is what I have been able to gather from sites that claim to know everything about every movie but their information often leave much to be desired. I have also read some other names as the director of this movie. Not just that, this movie is even confused with another movie called “Daulat Ke Dushman”(1981). And as can be seen, the cast above does not name a lady either.
I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this forgotten movie which seems to have vanished into thin air as soo as it was released.
The music of this movie suffered the same fate. Personally I never heard any of the songs of this movie during those days when this movie was released.
Here is a song from this movie which I heard for the first time only recently when I was sent the lyrics of this song by Avinash Scrapwala. This song is sung by Kishore Kumar. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.
With a musical team like this, this song should have done better than be forgotten like this. But it has ended up as a forgotten song.
Here is this song, which is lovely to listen to. And in case one does not like the song on first hearing, listen to it a few times and then the song will grow on you. In fact that is how songs become popular. Since this song did not get an opportunity to get played during its time, it naturally ended up unsung. This song deserved a better fate than that.

Song-Jeena to hai par ae dil kahaan (Paanch Dushman)(1973) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-R D Burman
Lyrics(Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)
jeena to hai,
par ae dil kahaan aan
jeena to hai,
par ae dil kahaan
arre baithoon to
o o o o
nahin milti hai zameen
ho o o o
main udna chaahoon to
hai door aasmaan
naaraaz koi naa koi meharbaan
na kahin koi bijlee,
na koi aashiyaan
naaraaz koi naa koi meharbaan
naa kahin koi bijlee,
naa koi aashiyaan
are baithoon to
o o o o
nahin milti hai zameen
ho o o o
main udna chahoon to
hai door aasmaan
jeena to hai,
par aye dil kahaan
jalta hai badan
kahin saaya nahin
kisi aanchal ke badley
hai sulagta dhuaan
jalta hain badan
kahin saaya nahin
kisi aanchal ke badley
hai sulagta dhuaan
are baithoon to
ho o o o o
nahin milti hai zameen
ho o o o o
main udna chahoon to
hai door aasmaan
jeena to hai,
par ae dil kahaan
jeena to hai,
par ae dil kahaan

One Lata, kishore excellent duet is there in Daulat ke dushman “Jaana hai hamko jahaan qaraar mile”(got shades of Anamika-kishore-rdb-combination “Meri bheegi bheegi si palkon pe reh gayee”)

Atul ji,
PAANCH DUSHMAN-1973 was a film made under the banner of M.G.O.Films,Bombay.It was produced by Manu Narang, but Directed by Bimal Rawal. The music of R.D.Burman had lyrics from Majrooh. There were 6 songs,3 solos and 3 duets.Solos were by KK-2 and Rafi-1,Duets of Asha/KK-2 and Lata/KK-1.The other songs are better than the above song.
The cast was Lead pair of MANU NARANG and RAJEE,both were first timers.Manu Narang was the son of S.D.Narang,the famous Producer/Director,who himself was a dashing Hero in the 40s.Films like KHAZANCHI-1941 were big hits-not because of Narang, but because of superb Debut by SHAMSHAD Begum in Hindi films. She had sung ALL 9 song-Solos-in the Debut film and created a sort of record, unbroken till today.
Manu Narang was one time the famed Playboy of the 50s and 60s and was in the news for all wrong reasons. There are umpteen stories of him and his Rang reliayan…………
No one can predict why a Hindi film succeeds. This film PAANCH DUSHMAN had the essential ingredients of a successful Masala film.It had a good looking youthful new lead pair, one of the best Music Directors,Best singers, very good story line,5 Villains(Pran,Shatrughna,Manmohan,Vinod khanna and Prem Chopda),
6 comedians(Mehmood,Mukri,Mohan choti,Agha,Sunder and Bramhachary),2 Cabaret dancers(Aruna Irani and Helen) an eternal weeping Maa-Baap(Durga Khote and Nazir Hussain),but HARD LUCK ! This murder mystery did not succeed…..
This period in Hindi films was of stories of Smugglers, desh ke Dushman ets.Accordingly the storyline wentlike…
Suni(Manu Narang) is accused of murdering his own brother Raju and a Prostitute. He and his lover Reeta(Rajee) learn that the real motive of the murder was Diamonds. So,to trap the real murderer,Sunil poses as a Dimond merchnt cum a Prince. The 5 villains are lured who go after the best Diamonds that he has. Finally, with the help of his friends, lover and a helping Police Inspector(Jagdish Raj),the real culprit is captured.
Despite dances, drama and mystery, fight and little weeping by Hero’s crippled parents, the public showed its back to the film and very quickly, the film went in hiding.

If I remember correctly, Manu Narang was in what is called in the current lingo, a Page-3 personality. I don’t know whether he was the owner of Ambassador Hotel in Churchgate, Mumbai or was associated with it. I think he was once arrested for some foreign exchange related charges.
Devina, Dev Anand daughter was married into Narang family and
I remember those days seeing her marriage picture in a film magazine. But I am not sure whether the groom was from Manu Narang’s family.
