Sitaaron ki mehfil saji tum na aaye

Posted on: November 21, 2012

“Udan Khatola” (1955) was a Sunny Art Productions movie. It was produced and directed by S U Sunny. The movie had Dilip Kumar, Nimmi, Jeevan, Nawab, Agha, Roopmala, Amar, Tuntun, Surya Kumari etc in it.

Five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the sixth song from this movie.

This “missing the beloved” category of song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Nimmi. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Song-Sitaaron ki mehfil saji tum na aaye (Udan Khatola)(1955) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

aayi thhi raat josh-e-tamanna liye huye
jaati hai ab luti huyi ee ee
duniya liye huye

sitaaron ki mehfil saji tum na aaye
sitaaron ki mehfil saji
tum na aaye
saji tum na aaye
tumhen hum ne aawaaz di sajna aa aa
tumhen hum ne aawaaz di tum na aaye
haaye tum na aaye
haaye tum na aaye

ho o o o
o o o
bichhadne ko yeh raat ka kaarwaan hai
haaye kaarwaan hai
hua chaand be-noor
chup aasmaan hai
chup aasmaan hai
chali rooth kar chaandni
tum na aaye
haaye tum na aaye
sitaaron ki mehfil saji
tum na aaye
saji tum na aaye

ho o o o
o o o
abhi jaagte hain umeedon ke taare
umeedon ke taare
chale aao pyaare muhabbat pukaare
muhabbat pukaare
bahaaron ko neend aa gayi tum na aaye
haaye tum na aaye
haaye tum na aaye

chale aao pyaare
muhabbat pukaare
chale aao pyaare
muhabbat pukaare

Once, Rajji told my parents that he had signed a new girl, named Nawab Bano, as the second lead for Barsaat (1949). He also said he’d be naming her Kinni (my pet name). I threw a fit, started banging my feet on the floor and said, “Please, please don’t give my name to your heroine.” So he called her Nimmi instead!

–Interesting trivia on Nimmi, RK and Tabassum, which I wasnt aware of before…

Indeed it is an interesting trivia about our beloved Nimmi. 🙂

There is a story behind the name NIMMI.
In the film AAG-48,Raj calls his girlfriend Nirmala,by the name of NIMMI.Later in the film,he calls,Nargis and Kamini Kaushal also by the name NIMMI.
When RK gave Nawab Bano a role in Barsaat,he also gave her the name NIMMI and the name continued.
This is mentioned in the book on Raj Kapoor by Alexi Vostov.

Bluefireji, I am confused reading your comment. Please clarify:
– Raj Kapoor told your parents that he is going to name his new heroine Nimmi?
– Kinni is your pet name?
– Your parents told Raj Kapoor that Kinni cannot be the name of the heroine?
I am asking these questions since I am not understanding how you / your parents are connected with Raj Kapoor, pls excuse my ignorance.

Aparna Ji,

Sorry for the confusion.

No, im not related to anyone from bollywood 🙂

That was actually, Tabassum narrating her story, her experiences with Raj Kapoor.

I had mentioned Tabassum’s name at the bottom, but i guess it wasnt very clear.

Kinni is Tabassum’s pet name, and she must be 6-7 yrs old when this incidence with Raj Kapoor happened during 1948/1949.

Regards.

I love the songs of Uran Khatola. They are among the best Naushad turned out. Uran Khatola and Shabab, imo.
