Jamuna ke teer Kanha aa

Posted on: January 2, 2013

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

In the sphere of Geeta Dutt’s non-filmy songs (NFS), I was aware of only one of her songs hauley hauley hawaayen doley during my younger days, thanks to the radio. Much later, I had bought 78 RPM record of this NFS sometime in early 70s. If I remember correctly, this record had ‘jamuna ke teer kaanhaa aao’ on the other side. So I became aware of one more NFS of her. Probably those days of early 50s, the singers will have to sing at least two NFS songs to bring out one 78 RPM record. With the advent of internet, we have access to some more of her NFS based on which I have a feeling that compared with other playback singers of her time like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Mukesh, Manna Dey etc, she has cut comparatively very few Hindi NFS discs. I found that none of her NFS other than the two I referred to above, were known to me though they are beautifully rendered by her. I have recently heard ‘ye hawaa ye fizaa ye bahaaren’ composed by V Balsara and I liked it very much.

In the 40s and 50s, NFS would mostly confine to ghazals and devotional songs. Keeping with the tradition, Geeta Dutt also sang some devotional songs. Perhaps the popularity of her bhajan songs in ‘Jogan’ (1950) influenced the record company to try her for non-filmy bhajan songs. The song which I have chosen for discussion is a Krishna devotional song ‘jamuna ke teer kaanhaa aao’ (1954). The song is penned by Bharat Vyas and set to music by Nikhil Ghosh. It is said that Geeta Dutt conveys the meaning and mood of the songs more through her singing than with the lyrics. In this song, the way she sings ‘aao o’, bajaao o’, ‘dikhaao o’ with slight elongations, one can feel how desperate Radha is to meet Krishna.

One can listen to this song umpteen times without diminishing the fulfillment.

Sadanand ji

You made my day today. Oh what a wonderful bhajan this is, one of my most favorite. I have prepared a CD with some very special bhajans for listening in the car. This one is included.

And I fully agree with what you say about the expressions simply through her voice. A real gem.

Thanks

Kamath ji,
Thank you for posting this wonderful number.
However, there seems to be some confusion as to who composed this music.
In my post on Vasant prabhu on the 26th Dec 2012,I have mentioned that when Prabhu was working in HMV,he composed some NFS for Lata ji and Geeta ji.One of the songs by Geeta ji was the above one,’jamuna ke teer kanhaa aao’
There is no dispute that the NFS Hole hole hawaa is composed by Nikhil
ghosh.
Just check if there is any other proof, besides what is mentioned on You Tube, about the composer.

Dear Arun,

Thanks for appreciating the song.

I was aware of the confusion about MD of this song. gitayan.com has credited this song to Vasant Prabhu while geetadutt.com has credited this to Nikhil Ghosh. I could not verify with other reliable sources. My 78 rpm record of this song was not traceable, probably must have misplaced/lost while shifting to my new house.

So I went by my hunch. The orchestration of this song to my mind does not seem to match with the orchestration style of Vasant Prabhu’s compositions that I have heard. Until we get some reliable proof that Vasant Prabhu has composed the music for this song, I suggest that we retain Nikhil Ghosh as MD of this song for the time being.

If my memory serves me right , Geeta Dutt rendered a beautiful melodious NFS ” pritam aan milo dukhiya jiya pukarae ” . Incidently same lyrics are sung by CH Atma too. These records. Used to be very Popular on Radio Ceylon programme on NFS.

I remember listening to this song very often on the radio when I was younger. It is beautiful, as you say Sadanandji, more because of the haunting voice of Geeta Dutt. 🙂 Thank you for this post.
