Happy (belated) Birthday Danny Denzongpa!!! (DOB 25 february 1948)

How people succeed in their lives after initial struggles and sometimes even after deviating from their original career option (which they have envisaged earlier) has always been a subject of interest for me.
I find such people as inspirational role-models for others. Their success stories are based on perseveresnce and doggedness. They are not only successful, they also contribute in the development of Arts and Culture in Society.

So, when I go through Danny’s real life story (from information available in the public domain), it gives me another reason, other than his filmography, to write this article here.

Danny’s dream was to join the Army and he had been chosen the Best Cadet from the Bengal National Cadet Corps. He was also a bio-science graduate and wished to join the Armed Forces Medical College, but after the 1962 Indo-Chinese war his mother forbid him to have any connection with the Army.

So he took to the FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) and he became a graduate of FTII. It was at FTII that his batch mate Jaya Bhaduri (now Jaya Bachchan) gave given him the name of Danny which was easy for people to pronounce than his original name of Tshering Phintso Denzongpa.

Danny has breweries in Sikkim which according to him are his real bread earners and acting in films has happened just by the way.

Now coming to films we all are aware of his various villainous and character roles. For me the very first memories of Danny that immediately come to my mind is the handicapped and frustrated husband from the film ‘Dhund-1973’, and then the song ‘mera naam aao mere paas aao’ (Ye Gulistaan hamara-1972) , and thereafter the different character roles from ’Mere Apne-1971, Khote Sikkey, Chor Machaye Shor-1974,Dharmatma, Raftaar, Kaala Sona-1975, and Fakira, Kaalicharan,Laila Majnu – 1976, Devta and Naya Daur 1978’, ‘Bulandi (1980)’,’Love Story-1983’ and his famous roles in Mujhe insaaf chahiye, Pyaar Jhukta Nahin,Hum, Agneepath, Khuda Gawaah, Krantiveer, Ghaatak, Kohraam etc.

He has sung in films with four of our legendary singers , viz.Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhosle.

But that is not the only reason to have this post here.

As a Rajesh Khanna fan I was aware of this song, but I had not watched this particular movie, so when I searched for the details of this movie I came to know that this film ‘PHIR WAHI RAAT-1980’ was directed by Danny.

Further when I searched for its video on tube, I I had another pleasant surprise in store for me! What I find was that this song was based on a Nepali folk song which was sung by Danny himself with none other than Asha Bhosle in circa 1976. And when Danny got a chance to direct this movie, he gave this tune to RD Burman.

kaisi rahi aaj balam ji ye dillagi

kaisi rahi aaj balam ji ye dillagi
kaisi rahi aaj balam ji
duniya ulat detaa main to
thhodi der jo tum naa aur miltey

haar baithe thhodi hi door chal ke

dekhoon badan hai ki jwaala
baahon mein to aao
lekar ye honthon ka pyaala
chhalakati naa jaao
he dekhoon badan hai ki jwaala
baahon mein to aao
lekar ye honthon ka pyaala

aankhon mein kaajal hai
kaajal mein soorat tumhaari
seene mein dil hai to
dil ko zaroorat tumhaari

aankhon mein kaajal hai
kaajal mein soorat tumhaari
seene mein dil hai to
dil ko jaroorat tumhaari

hai koi aashiq tumhaara
yaad karoge hamase huzoor milake

sang mere nikale the saajan
haar baithe thodi hi door chalake

Thanks a lot Prakash ji for the appreciation ! this encouragement will keep me going further !
Also thanks for adding the details for the movie.
Since this article was prepared about 2 and half months back i could not put up other details of the movie at that time and i was only concentrating on Danny , because the original Nepali song had totally hypnotized me and watched it many times on the youtube. I had got the VCD of this movie that time but due to time constraint could not watch it. I watched the movie only after completing this article. till then i only watched this song many times.
Thanks !

Hullo Avinashji
Nice post to open you innings with.
actually the start tune of the song ‘Dhoondho re dhoondho’ remind sm e of the Hema Malini song from “Kudrat” which starts ‘Chalo ri Chalo ri Chalo ri Chalo ri kisi pyase pardesi ke aane se pehle”.
to add to info shared by Prakashji — this movie had a suspense regarding a haveli inherited by Kim as its background. and the viewer is made to suspect everyone from Rajesh Khanna to Danny to Aruna Irani. don’t remember whether Suresh Oberoi was also a suspect but as in the Rekha Shashi Kapoor starrer “Kaali Ghata” it turns out all the above r innocent & i think A K Hangal was the villian.

Thanks!
and a slight correction is that the song as mentioned by you is from the Rajesh-Hema starrer ‘ Mehbooba’ ! In ‘Phir Wahi Raat’ the suspense does not hold longer as the murder of Danny’s wife takes place-through Kim -who kills her in a rage, as she is haunted continuously by Aruna Irani (who is wearing the mask of Danny’s wife while terrorising Kim), but thereafter the maid servant (AK Hangal’s daughter) is killed by Danny thinking that he has killed Kim and lastly Danny also kills Aruna Irani. But the movie is quite interesting and songs are also good. Suresh Oberoi plays a Police Inspector here and a good performance by him.

Avinash ji,

Welcome to the team of guest writers. And Danny was always a natural in his roles. He didnt get any awards or much recognition , but had his own place in the crowded industry.

Last I heard, he had a bunglow in JVPD schem, Juhu, very near to J. Om Prakash’s bunglow in the lane right behind Amitabh Bachan’s house, ‘ Pratieksha ‘ . When I read your post I remembered that typical pargola style house with multiple curved roofs in all white, if remember correctly.

Regards.
