This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The end of the 40s and middle of the 50s was the period in which many comedy and musical films were made. This was the Golden Era of HFM and the Indian audience was not only enjoying good music but also laughing out loudly with the comedy films. Actually,it was a reflection on a joyous nation, which got its Independence after a long time and with sacrifices. So,it was a time for making merry !

Take a look at the films made between 1947 and 1956. In 1947 the highest number of Hindi films were produced for the 50 year period from 1931 to 1984. The number of movies released in in 1947 was 181. This was surpassed only in 1985 when 187 films were made. In these 10 years (1947-1956) a total of 1121 films, at the average of 112 films/year, were made. In the next 10 year period(1957-1966) the average came down.

Some of the prominent films, comedy and musical, made during 1947 to 1956 were,

Shehnai, Khidki, Sargam, Patanga, Ek thi ladki, Badi behen, Bhagam bhag, Beqasoor, Aag, Mela, Barsat, Mahal, Anokhi ada, Andaz, Dillagi, Dulari, Lahore, Babul, Bawre nain, Amber, Albela, Agra road, Awaara, Awaz, Aah, Udan khatola, Utpatang, Kar bhala, Khazana, Chacha Choudhari, Chor bazar, Chori chori, Jaal, Jauhari, Jhanak Jhanak Payal baje, Jhamela, Jhanjhar, Taxi driver, etc etc . The list will be too long to be put up here.

The gist of the matter is, omedy and Musicals were the two Genres which were popular in this 10 year period.

During this period(for Comedy),there was this pair of Gope and Yakub(behaving like Laurel and Hardy pair),in the middle were Bhagwan and Kishore kumar and at the end of the period it was Johnny Walker who ruled the roost.

Gope Vishandas Kamlani was born in Hyderabad-Sindh on 11-4-1913. He started with Eastern Film productions in which Dixit-on his waning period-was the main comedian. He worked in many films made by the Dariyani brothers in late 30s. He was a perfect round in body with a child like face. He was lucky and always got films during his period of 1933 to 1957. He died of a massive Heart attack on the sets of ” Teesri gali “. Incidentally, his last dialogue recorded just before his death was- ” ab main oopar jaa raha hoon ” !

Yakub, born in Jabalpore in 1904, saw the world in travels, before he joined films. First he was a famous Villain. Then he shifted to Comedy, actually setting an example for many later years’ villains to follow, like, Jeevan, Pran, Kader Khan, Shakti kapoor, Sadashiv Amarapurkar etc.

Yakub joined Gope to make a comedy pair in just 3 films, Patanga-49,beqasoor-50 and Sagai-51. this pair, though hilarious and very popular did not continue as Yakub got bored of the pairing !

Sagai was an excellent combination of Comedy and lilting music by the then King Composer-C.Ramchandra. Out of the total 9 songs, the comedy pair had 4 songs to them.

The cast included Rehana, Premnath, Yakub,Gope, Poornima, Sunder etc.
The film was produced by P L Santoshi- a diehard fan (and one sided lover) of Rehana. He produced Sagai, Shehnai, Patanga,Sargam, Khidki,Chham chhama chham and Shin shinaki Boobla boo, exclusively for Rehana.

Rehana,(Mushtar Jehan) was born in Bombay. Her first film as a leading lady was “Hum sab ek hain”,directed by thebDebutant P L Santoshi. From the day one Santoshi became mad after her, but she only used him, without giving anything in return ! From Sajan-1947 to Sagai-1951 Rehana did many films and was famous for her seductive dances. After Sagai, her films started failing and after Dilli Darbar in 1956, Rehana migrated to Pakistan, where also she was not so successful.

Here is the synopsis of film Sagai-51-

SAGAI-1951 was a musical comedy which had the all time haunting duet of Lata-Talat-Mohabbat mein aise zamane bhi aaye, kabhi ro diye hum…
It was directed by H.S.Rawail. Music was by C.Ramchandra whose assistant for this film was Chick Chocolate-an independent composer in later years. The songs were excellent and became very popular in those days.

The cast was Premnath, Rehana,Poornima, Vijaylaxmi, Gope, Yakub, Iftikhar, Cuckoo, Sunder, Mohana etc.
When Chandani(Rehana) returns from London, she refuses to marry Lala Jugal Kishor’s son, to whom her engagement was done by her father(Iftikhar),in her childhood. When forced to marry, she runs away from the house and somehow joins a team of petty thieves Fooman (Gope) and Dhabu(Yakub). To avoid police, they board a ship, owned by Shahzadi(Poornima) and heading for her kingdom Jagira. Chandni, to avoid her identity, dons a boy’s dress and becomes Chand. They get employed on the ship.

The captain of the ship, Prem,is handsome. Both Shahzadi and Chandni fall in his love. Shahzadi expresses her love, but Chand(Chandani) can not do so. When Shahzadi gives a ring to Prem and he shows it to him/her, she throws it in the sea, reveals herself and expresses her love. Prem also falls in her love.

When the ship reaches Jagira, Prem refuses to marry Shahzadi. Her brother, the King(Hiralal) arrests him and proposes to Chandani. With help of Fooman and Dhabu, Chandani rescues Prem, and they sail away in the night.

When they reach home, Chandani’s father is surprised to see Prem, as he is the same with whom Chandani’s SAGAI had taken place in her childhood.
All are happy !

Out of the 9 songs of this film , 7 were already posted. We will enjoy the dance and song from the 8th song today. (now only one song from the movie, viz. “aankhon se jo bhi aansoo bahega” remain to be discussed.

Arunji, I had read somewhere that Santoshi, madly in love with Rehana (from your posting it now transpires that it was one-sided!), had spent a night in front of Rehana’s flat and never did she open the door for the poor Santoshi. And it is after this event that he composed the immortal song “Tum Kya Jane, Tumharte Pyaar Mein Hum Kitna Roye” for Shin Shinaki Bubla Boo. True/false?
