Hai naam mera Ramzaani

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Today’s song is from an Arabian Night Story- Alladin aur Jadui Chirag-1952.

Fantasy has always attracted Human mind. Whether it is a grown up person or a child, everyone loves Fantasy. For the grown up, the Fantasy may be about the Gold Mohurs or may be the young and beautiful Princess Badr, while the child has the Fantasy for the Magic Lamp or the Genie !

Stories from Arabian Nights have been popular for a few centuries, and throughout the world, as these were translated in every language across the Globe. Children whether in Europe, Africa or Asia, grew up reading and listening to these stories.

Among the Arabian Night stories, there is a variety and there are stories for every liking. For Travellers, it is Sindbad the Sailor, for action lovers it is Alibaba and 40 Thieves and for fantasy there is Alladin and his Magic Lamp. Even now,I like the story of Alladin. I find that this story has many emotions, Bravery, conceit, innocence, love, adventure, imagination etc etc.

All over the world, almost in every language films were made on these stories, particularly Alladin and the magic Lamp. In India,we not only made films on Alladin’s original story, but also in our own ingenious ways created a son of Alladin, a Daughter of Alladin. We even combined Alibaba with Laila. Not only this but the Jadui chirag was connected with Tarzan also in Hindi films.

One must really admire the fertile imagination ofthe Indian film story writers in diversifying the original stories into new stories. There are no Taboos for connecting anything with anything else under the Sun. Thus we have films like a combination film like Alibaba, Alladin and Sindbad(1965), Tarzan and Magic lamp, Tarzan ka Beta, Tarzan 303, Tarzan and Delilah. There is no restriction or Time boundaries, so you have Krishna Hanuman Yudh. Indians are family people, so they added sons and daughters to Alibaba, Alladin, Sindbad and also Tarzan. The idea, may be, was to make them India-friendly !

Then there is something called ” Cinematic Liberty “. This strange phenomena gives liberty to the story-writers to twist the factual incidents, stories and Historical facts to suit the picturisation. Sometimes it is necessary but most of the times,it is out of convinience and to add Masala to the original story.

Actually, the Fantasy stories of Arabian Nights in their original forms itself are full of mystery, suspense, magic and valour, but once the original story has been filmed, the subsequent editions on the same story, have to give something different, hence the twists and inclusion of several relatives like sons and daughters etc.

The origin of Arabian Nights has been already discussed in this Blog, so a repetition is not needed.

The first films on Alibaba, and Alladin were made in 1927 by the Imerial Film company.Sindbad had a late entry,in 1930,by Sharda films. These were the Silent movies. In the 1927 version of Alibaba, the movie mughal and the owner of mehboob Studios,Mehboob had worked as an extra-one of the 40 Thieves !

In the Talkie Era,the first film on Alibaba and 40 Thieves was made by Madan Theatres,Calcutta in 1932. Alladin came in 1933 and Sindbad was very late-in 1946 !

Today’s film- Alladin aur Jadui Chirag-1952 was made by Basant Pictures of Homi Wadia ( husband of fearless Nadia. Just one curiosity…..After marriage was she called NADIA WADIA ? 🙂 ).
four Lyricists-Shyam Hindi, Anjum Jaipuri, Pt.Chand and Ramesh Pandey. The Music Directory was S N Tripathi.

S N Tripathi was a multifaceted personality. He was born on 14-3-1913,at Benares and spent lot of time with composed Badriprasad, who also was from Benares.he joined Moris college at Lucknow and Devika Rani picked him up as a violinist,to Bombay Talkies. He was Sarswatidevi’s asst. from Jeevan Naiya-34,for 10 films and then left. As an independent MD his first film was Chandan-1939. In 1946 he gave music to Uttara Abhimanyu-a Mythological and this was begining for his mythological branding. In 1948 he gave music to Rambhakta Hanuman, which became popular. He gave music to so many Mythologicals, that he must have covered all Indian God films. he always got such soft films.

In 1952 his first Fantasy film Alladin aur jadui Chirag came and then he was a specialist for such films too.

Janam Janam ke Phere-57 and Rani Roopmati-59 were milestones for his songs.

Tripathi gave music to many Historical films too. After 1970,his film flow slowed and his last film was Mahasati Tulsi-1985.

He was sick for some time and died on 28-3-1988 at Diamond nursing home,in Bandra,Bombay,in the midnight at 3 am.

Tripathi was very prolific in his field. Besides giving music to more than 250 films,he acted in about 200 films,Directed 39 films and wrote s/plays for 37 films.

His role as Hanuman in Rambhakta Hanuman-48 and as jadugar Hikmat in Alladin and jadui chirag-1952 were very famous. He was a singer and sang many songs.

Chitragupta was his assistant for many years and he gave him chance to sing songs in films. In today’s film also Chitragupta had 2 songs. Infact today’s song is also sung by Chitragupta and Shamshad.

The story of the film was…

<blockquote<Jadugar Hikmat(S N Tripathi) is in search for the Magic lamp.It is ordained that only an honest man with 21 moles on his right hand will be able to find it first.,so Hikmat is on the look out of such a man.

Alladin (Mahipal) is an honest young man who is leisurely and spends time with friends. Once he defies the king's order to stay indoors during the Princess Badr's procession and sees beautiful Badr. They see each other and fall in love at first sight.

This is,however, not liked by the evil son Nazim,of the evil Vazeir and he arrests Alladin on a flimsy excuse to punish him. That time Hikmat sees the 21 moles on his hand and takes him with him to search for magic Lamp, pretending that he was his Uncle.

Alladin enters the cave and finds the Lamp but Hikmat wants the lamp first and Alladin wants to come out first..

Angry Hikmat closes the cave door and goes away.

Alladin mistakenly brushes the lamp and finds the Genie. With his help,he not only comes out and moves into a palace but also demands the King to marry Badr with him.

Nazeem, who is after her, challenges him. Meanwhile,Alladin realises that the evil Vazeir has kept the real king in Jail and his look-alike is put on the throne. In the following duel,he not only defeats Nazim, kills the Vazier and rescues the real king, but also marries beautiful princess Badr.

He lives happily with Badr. Once, when he is out hunting,Jadugar Hikmat comes and lures the palace maid to exchange old lamps with new ones. Once the Magic lamp is received,he moves the palace and Badr to faroff place and tries to woo her.

Alladin, with his magic ring, locates Badr and advises her to pretend love with Hikmat and then kill him. After a dance and song item she kills Hikmat.

Alladin and Badr live happily ever after.

Let us now see and enjoy a song in which Hikmat the Magician is trying to excange New lamps with old ones. S N Tripathi B M Vyas is in the role of Hikmat here.

Song-Hai Naam mera Ramzaani (Alladin Aur Jaadui Chiraag)(1952) Singer-Chitragupta, Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Shyam Hindi, MD-S N Tripathi

Lyrics

main jahaan bhi gaya
bolbaala hua
sabse aala hai mera chiraag
jab ye ghar mein jale
aisa pyaara lage
jaise sehra mein phoolon ka baagh
iski nishaani
jalti jawaani
jalti jawaani
hai jawaani
hai jawaani he
taazir hoon Iraani
hai naam mera Ramzaani
kaala lekar ujla dena
sauda hai sultaani
yaaron sauda hai sultaani

jhoothha zamaane bhar ka
rasta le apne ghar ka
baaten banaana aisi waisi ee ee
jhoothha zamaane bhar ka
rasta le apne ghar ka
baaten banaana aisi waisi ee ee
harkaten bandar jaisi
soorat kalandar jaisi
hamko sunaaye kaisi kaisi ee ee

haay haseenon
o be-yaqeenon
?? nasheenon ki na maani hai
na maani hai
taazir hoon Iraani
hai naam mera Ramzaani
kaala lekar ujla dena
sauda hai sultaani
yaani sauda hai sultaani
taazir hoon Iraani
hai naam mera Ramzaani
kaala lekar ujla dena
sauda hai sultaani
yaaron sauda hai sultaani

ek dum ki kasar se
bana hai bashar
warna langoor ki hai ye zaat

o meri jaan o jigar
chhedkhaani na kar
dekh achchi nahin hai ye baat
moonchhen hain bhari bhari
arre lagtin hain pyaari pyaari
haay
jaise ho daadhi waala bakra aa aa

haan main
arre daadhi waala bakra

munh ko sambhaal ladki
haay
deta hai kisko jhidki be

haay re haay
tera nakhra aa aa
sun re madaari
o ho
kya hai beemaari
arre
teri hazaamat banaani hai banaani

ishq
taazir hoon Iraani
hai naam mera Ramzaani
kaala lekar ujla dena
sauda hai sultaani
yaani sauda hai sultaani
taazir hoon Iraani
hai naam mera Ramzaani
kaala lekar ujla dena
sauda hai sultaani
yaani sauda hai sultaani

Arunji,
Thank you for the post. Chtragupt singing, S N Tripathi playing the role of Hikmat/Ramzani! Heard this song for the first time and enjoyed it. But can you give some information about the lyricist Shyam Hindi?

Venkataraman ji,
Thanks for liking the song.
Not much is known about Lyricist Shyam Hindi.
He composed for about 30 films, most of which were either composed by Chitragupt or wherein Chitragupta had sung. Some reference of he being Chitragupta himself is also to be found.

Regards.

As per my knowledge,BMVyas had done the role of Vazier in this film.
In this clip the actor looks like Tripathi only. The mannerisms do not tally with BMVyas style.
The make up is so much that confusion is very much possible.

I also compliment you for this unique song.

A trivia about Mehboob Khan, which I just read in his biography written by Rauf Ahmad, the well known film journalist. In his first film as extra, as one of the 40 thieves he had to remain hidden in the drum, covered with the lid throughout! So he must be unique in that in his first film appearance, he was not seen. And people later asked him, why was he given the role at all.
