The film ‘Teesri Gali’ makes a debut on this blog today. It is one of the lesser known films from 1958. But being that the music direction is by Chitragupt, there are bound to be some very good songs included in this film. And sure enough, the song in this post is a gem that has stayed obscure for too long. A very wonderful and a lilting duet in the voices of Hemant Da and Lata ji.
‘Teesri Gali’ is a film produced under the banner of Radiant Films, Bombay. It is produced by CD Sardarangani, and is directed by Kundan Kumar. The star cast is not the top rung, but still includes many very familiar artists. The list of actors includes Shyama, Abhi Bhattacharya, Prem Adeeb, Kammo, Gope, Neeru, Leela Mishra, Nagpal, Bhagwan Sinha, Mohan Choti, Dubey, Panchotia, Ramlal Pehalwan, Arya Kumar, C N Kapoor etc.
The music department is also well equipped. The lyrics are written by Anjum Jaipuri and Majrooh Sultanpuri. Of the six songs in this film, two are written by Anjum Jaipuri and four are by Majrooh Sb. This particular song is from the pen of Majrooh Sb. And the music direction is by the redoubtable Chitragupt, as indicated above.
Only the audio of this song is available, and hence it is not feasible to comment on the on screen performers of this song. But going by the star cast, it is my guess that this song would be Abhi Bhattacharya and Shyama. Abhi Bhattacharya had started his career in Hindi films, in the early fifties, as a lead actor. But I suppose, because of his not so young looks, and a very strong accent, he did not last very long as a hero. He continued to appear as the lead actor till late 1950s. He appeared as hero opposite to some of the main leading ladies of that era – Kamini Kaushal, Usha Kiran, Geeta Bali, Shashikala, Madhubala, Mala Sinha, Shyama, Jabeen. But by 1960, he had slowly transitioned into either character roles, or lead roles in mythology films.
A brief note on the song posted on YouTube. The post on YouTube indicates that the female singing voice is Asha Bhosle. This is an error, which has also been pointed out by our dear Arun ji, through a comment on this song on YouTube. Still the correction has not been made. The singing voices in this song are definitely Hemant Da and Lata Mangeshkar.
Listen to this wonderful melody, crafted by Majrooh Sb and Chitragupt. Enjoy.

Lyrics
beemaar e mohabbat ka
itna sa fasaana hai
marta hai koi tum par
jeene ka bahaana hai
ho o
saansen to hain uljhi si
dil hai to deewaana hai
marta hai koi tum par
jeene ka bahaana hai
ho o
beemaar e mohabbat ka
ho o
o o o
o o o
o o o
seekhe hain mere dil ne
andaaz tere dil ke
seekhe hain mere dil ne
andaaz tere dil ke
kuchh aur bhi deewaane
bechain huye mil ke
pehloo mein kasak si hai
honthon pe taraana hai
marta hai koi tum par
jeene ka bahaana hai
ho o
beemaar e mohabbat ka
o ho
o o o
o o o
o o o
dil ne teri soorat mein
ik shamma jalaayi hai
dil ne teri soorat mein
ik shamma jalaayi hai
ye raat mohabbat ki
taqdeer se aayee hai
dhadkan ki sadaa sun lo
khaamosh zamaana hai
marta hai koi tum par
jeene ka bahaana hai
ho o
beemaar e mohabbat ka
itna sa fasaana hai
marta hai koi tum par
jeene ka bahaana hai
ho o
beemaar e mohabbat ka

An interesting side note about the film ‘Teesri Galli’.
This was the last film of famous actor Gope! He expired during the shooting. He delivered his last dialogue ‘Main Upar jaake jawab doonga..’ & got a heart attack on the set !. He really went ‘Upar’ without giving any ‘Jawab!!
He was a very good actor & left many good memories for his fans.

It is astonishing to know how people are able to gather such unusual moments like departure of Gope, thanks for sharing

Abhi was the worst actor with a wooden expression firmly plastered at all times on his face. Only wooden spoon was missing!!!
