Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Hai agar dushman dushman zamaana gham nahin

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

So we reach the alphabet ‘H’ in this series of A to Z of Rafi songs. There are around 350 songs beginning with ‘H’ in the excel sheets listing Rafi sahab’s songs. At a guess, some 125 songs beginning with this alphabet are already posted in the blog. Among the remaining songs, I have zoomed in on this qawwali from ‘Ham kisi se kam nahin’. As far as this series is concerned, this will be the second song from this movie from 1977. Now, I have many reasons for choosing again a song from this film after ‘chaand mera dil chandni ho tum ‘.

One of them is that it is a wonderful and hit qawwali from the late 70’s when R D Burman was rediscovering the range of Rafi Sahab. May be reconnecting musically is a better way to describe this phase. Whatever and however big his achievments in his field, R D Burman started out with Rafi sahab, tasted success for the first time with films like ‘Chhotte Nawaab’ and ‘Teesri Manzil’ . Apart from the musicals of Nasir Hussain’s ‘Pyaar ka mausam’, ‘Caravan’,’ Yaadon ki Baraat’ and ‘HKSKN’ there were some beautiful songs in ‘Humshakal’, ‘Mela’ and ‘Abhilasha ‘ etc. Also mentionable is the qawwali in ‘Aandhi’.

He ended the Rafi era with great song in films like ‘ Abdullah ‘, ‘The Burning Train’, ‘Kaaliya’, ‘Qudrat’ and ‘ Shaan ‘,with quality solo songs and the sensational qawwali “Pal do pal ka saath hamaara” . Some of the greatest R D Burman songs are by Rafi sahab. They are too well known, I do not have to list them. I personally consider the happy solo of Rafi ‘Tum bin jaaun kahaan ke duniya mein aa ke ” and Lata-Rafi duet ‘Rut hai milan ki saathi mere aa re ” among the best and most charming of R. D. Burman songs.

Another reason is, this is a true filmy qawwali with tall claims and boasts and no pretense at anything else. And of course the singers are Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle. The lyricist is none other than Majrooh Sultanpuri. And a qawwali was so far missing from the list of A-Z so far.

I have some special songs in this series lined up with a promise that I shall not fall back on ‘HKSKN’ in this series.

There are no more Rafi songs in this film anyway, as all four are done with this post.

So stay tuned, there is a foot tapping rock n roll song to follow 🙂 . After this one.

Lovely Qawwali, Rafi saab is GOD :). nahm ji, fantastic series. Now I wonder what the next rocking song would be :). By the way, the other category for this song is also a Title Song and Theme Song?
