Here is the ‘U’ song in the series of A-Z of Rafi songs. I knew this song vaguely, but when looking for ‘U” song in the list, I could not recognize it. I decided to try it because it is a Rafi solo composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. I heard the whole song and picturization, I liked the energy and mischief in the composition. The lyricist is Hasrat Jaipuri.
This song in from the movie ‘Vachan’ (1974), starring Shashi Kapoor , Vimi, Prem Chopra, Rajendra Nath etc. This song is being sung by Shashi Kapoor who is teasing Vimi in typical filmy style. That is another thing about hindi films, what we see as funny and entertaining on screen, will be unacceptable in our civilsed society in real life. If a roadside romeo is found behaving like this in public, with his girlfriend or whoever, he is bound to get beaten up. Same is the case with club songs and cabaret songs that we see in old films. It is far far away from how it must be reality. There I go with my presumptions about things I really know nothing about.
What is prompting this observation is my meeting with a couple of professional singers, a father and daughter duo, who were invited to sing at a live ghazal programme. The mother also accompanied, while talking to them, the mother told me that whenever the daughter is singing, she always accompanies her and she never sends her alone for any performance, as it is not safe. The whole family of four was present along with musicians- the son being one of the musicians.
We live in an unequal world, as it can never be the same for men and women in the field of performing arts. Not just in our society, but it is the same in all cultures around the world.
Coming back to the song under discussion and the film ‘Vachan’,very little information is available about the film on the imbd site. And this is the first song from this movie that is appearing in the blog. As Rafi solos go, this is an example of a fast paced, on the run song, where he is in full swing and there is no stopping him as well as Shashi Kapoor. Shashi Kapoor is the third most lucky ‘Kapoor’ who got wonderful Rafi songs to sing on screen. No prizes for guessing who are the first and second. The third Kapoor is the star of such musicals like ; “Jab Jab Phool khile”,” Pyaar ka Mausam” and “Haseena Maan Jaayegi” to name a few. Throughout the late 60’s and 70’s Shashi Kapoor was making his presence felt in commercial cinema and he is a prominent figure in parallel cinema of 70’s and 80’s.
I shall move on to ‘ V ‘ while you all enjoy this song.
