The image of Chitragupt is that of a music director – a creator of a treasure trove of heavenly melodies that are so numerous that a good representative sampler will take a long time to compile. In a career that lasted almost five decades in the industry, he composed music for almost 150 films in Hindi and Bhojpuri. Most of the time he had to be content with B/C grade stunt films and religious films, with a few sorties into the A grade categories. But whatever may have been the grade, the music by him has always been fabulous, no matter what the category of the film, and whatever was its fate.

Away from the image of a music director, not many people know that he was also a good singer, and has rendered a fair number of songs in Hindi films. A search of the Geet Kosh reveals a list of about 25 songs that he has rendered. But I believe that this number will be somewhat higher. After starting his career in 1946, he has created music for 18 films in the decade of 1940s. For many of these films, the details of the songs, their lyricists and their singers is not yet available. And I have a strong feeling that some of the songs from this period, where the details are missing, have been rendered by himself, singing his own compositions. I have some song recordings of his films from that period, where in the sound of the male voice is very likely Chitragupt’s own. Such discoveries are likely to add to the number of songs he has sung himself. So awaiting more confirmation.

Remembering Chitragupt on the anniversary of his birth (16th November).

For this occasion, I present a fun filled duet composed by Chitragupt and also sung by himself, accompanied by Shamshad Begum. The film is ‘Raaj Darbaar’, 1955. It is produced under the banner of Deepak Pictures directed by Balwant Bhatt. The star cast includes names such as Nirupa Roy, Ranjan, Ishwar Lal, Ranjeet Kumari, B M Vyas, Nagpal, Keshari, Shyam Sundar, Master Baccha, Azeem, Asha Mathur, Heena, Neera. The lyrics for the six songs in this film are written by two poets, Gopal Singh Nepali and Shyam Hindi. This song is written by Shyam Hindi, as per the Geet kosh. Regarding the lyricist, there citation on the YouTube is different from Geet Kosh. It states that the lyricist is Gopal Singh Nepali. I am going with the information from Geet Kosh.

The is a nok-jhonk type fun song. The lady and the gentleman are trading comments about the state of current affairs of the society. The gentleman is telling the lady to cover her face with her ghoonghat, because the glances of the people in present time are not good. And the lady responds by telling him to take rein in his own glances, as the times are not good. A light hearted tete-a-tete between the genders, tuned to a fast paced fun melody – it is sure to bring a smile to your face. Enjoy.

Lyrics

gaj bhar ka ghoonghat nikaal meri raani
zamaana buraa hai
ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai
ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai
aankhon ko apni sambhaal mere raaja
zamaana buraa hai
ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai
ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai

premi ke dil ko
tum jo khareedo
boloon mein is ki neelaami
ho ooo
boloon mein is ki neelaami
aashiq baney ho
itna to socho
sabse buri hai ghulaami
badlo zaraa apni chaal mere raaja
zamaana buraa hai
ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai

gaj bhar ka ghoonghat nikaal meri rani
zamaana buraa hai
ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai

tumko jo chhodoon
munh ko jo modoon
kya haal hoga tumhaara
ho ooo
kya haal hoga tumhaara

hum to hain saadhu
dil par hai kaabu
kar lenge tum bin guzaara
hum to hain saadhu
dil par hai kaabu
kar lenge tum bin guzaara
bhoolenge tera khyaal meri raani
zamaana buraa hai
ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai
aankhon ko apni sambhaal mere raaja
zamaana buraa hai
ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai

duniya mein aisa
dekha tamaasha
billi ko choohe daraa’en
ho ooo
billi ko choohe daraa’en
kalyug ki saari
baaten hain nyaari
sheron ko geedad sataayen
ye hai zamaane ka haal mere raaja
zamaana buraa hai
ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai

arre gaj bhar ka ghoonghat nikaal meri rani
zamaana buraa hai
ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai
aankhon ko apni sambhaal mere raja
zamaana buraa hai

ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai
ho oo ooo oo
zamaana buraa hai

He was so busy in his heydays that he used to call Rafi, Lata etc at his residence and conduct rehearsals simultaneously 3/4 songs at a time. Highly educated and equally cultured and humble. Great men are always so.
