Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini, the top male and female stars of 1970s, combined for the first time in 1974 in “Premnagar” (1974). Rajesh Khanna’s stars were setting at that time and the movie did not do as well as most Rajesh Khanna movies did just a few years ago during his heady days as the heartthrob of movie goers.

Here is a song from the movie “Farmaish” (1953). This is the ‘T’ songs of A-Z of Rafi song series. This is a duet song composed by Huslal-Bhagatram and lyricist is Qamar Jalaalabadi. A duet with Shamshad Begum was so far missing in the series. So here is the promised duet, which is a light hearted romantic banter.

When Helen appears on the screen, a very automatic thought that crosses the mind is – the playback singer will be Asha Bhosle. Such is the association between the two, that across the decades, most of the Helen dance songs have been crooned by Asha ji. But yes, there are other playback singers also that have sung for Helen on screen, and it will be an interesting category by itself – ‘non Asha Bhosle songs of Helen’. As I was searching for a special song for this post, it is completely by chance that I came across this wonderful peppy number, a Helen mujra song, sung by Usha Timothy. I heard it for the first time last night, and it is one of those matters of falling in love on the first hear.

The Voice of Mukesh #37

Ah haa, another lovely ghazal, this time from a lesser known film from 1949. The film is ‘Nazaare’, from the renowned banner of Ranjeet Movietone. The film is directed by Prahlad Dutt. A reading of the star cast indicates this would be one of those assembly line outputs of Ranjeet. The star cast includes Shashikala, Agha, Satish, Shanti Madhok, Khan, Anwari, Ramesh Thakur, Ram Avtar, Rajendra. The poet for the lyrics is identified as Rajinder Krishan, and the music is from the baton of Bulo C Rani. The film has sixteen songs in all, and a bit surprising that Bulo C Rani thought of using Mukesh for only one song in this film.
