This is the 19th song in the series ” VINTAGE KISHORE “.It is a duet from a film Miss Mala-1954. It is sung by Kishore ,Geeta and Chorus. The MD is Chitragupta.

Before I start discussing the song, Film or the other details,I wish to talk about another matter.

Nothing pleases a person more than meeting someone who likes his articles and is an avid reader of every article. On the Makar Sankranti day,i.e. 14th Jan 2014, one of the regular readers, commentators and a well wisher of this Blog, MR. VIJAY KUMAR GUPTA ji from Kolkata ( Calcutta ) came over to me personally at my place in Mumbai. I was very happy to meet him and discuss matters of mutual interest with him.

I was simply amazed at Mr. Gupta’s knowledge of old films and songs. It was also a matter of surprise and awe to me about Mr.Gupta’s tracking every single activity taking place on this Blog since about 4 years. He spoke about articles of Sudhir ji, Kamath ji, nahm ji and Upadhyaya ji. He also mentioned about Raja ji, Avinash ji, Khyati ji and Peeveesie’s Mom ji. He had nothing but immense respect and appreciation for our Leader ATUL JI, for his untiring efforts to run this Blog.

We spent almost an hour and half, before Mr. Gupta bid me Good-Bye. He not only made my day but also gave me joy and pleasure. Thank you,Mr. VIJAY KUMAR GUPTA Ji.

Now back to the song etc.

Miss Mala-54 was a Jayant Desai production film, produced and Directed by Jayant Desai, who was a well known Director of the 40s and 50s.

Jayant Jhinabhai Desai was born in Surat,Gujarat,on 28-2-1909, in a well to do family. he graduated from Bombay University and entered film line as an exhibitor in Surat. Later on he started writing Screen plays for London Films,Rangoon and then for krishna and Sharada studios. he joined Chandulal Shah’s Ranjit Studios in 1929,as his assistant for film ‘Rajputani’. Director Nandlal Jaswantlal ( Nagin,Taj,Champakali etc) was also another assistant in Ranjit.

When Nandlal left Ranjit to go to Europe, Jayant completed his film ‘Pahadi kanya-1930 ‘. At Ranjit Jayant directed 12 silent films. He was with Ranjit till 1943 and Directed 33 Talkie films while in Ranjit. Some of these films were Char Chakram, Bhool Bhulaiya, Nadira, Toofan mail, College Girl, Matlabi Duniya, Toofani Toli, Billi ( a copy of a Hollywood film, based on P.G.Wodehouse’s novel ” A Damsel in Distress” ), Sant Tulsidas, Diwali, Shaadi, Chandni, Bhaktaraj, Tansen(with Saigal), Zaban etc.

After leaving Ranjit, Jayant Desai established his own studio,Jupitor Films Studio, Jayant Desai productions and Hemlata Pictures. He also had exhibition interests in Hindmata and Star Theatres in Bombay’s Dadar area. In the 50s, he operated as a Distributor with his Jupiter films.

While in Ranjit, he had Directed K L Saigal in film Tansen. Sardar Chandulal Shah had called Saigal on a contract of 60 days. Jayant completed Tansen in 51 days flat. Kidar Sharma then used those remaining 9 days to make a quickie movie, viz. “Bhanwara” (1944) with Saigal.

Under the banner of Jayant productions, Jayant Desai made one more Saigal film-Tadbir-1945, with Suraiya in the lead. In his new company, Jayant had hired C.Ramchandra as a paid Composer on a salary of Rs. 300 pm. C Ramchandra gave music to many of his films like Zaban, Lalkar, Manorama, Chandragupta etc and all films became popular. C. Ramchandra was proud of his achievement.

One day CR heard a rumour that the great singer Saigal is coming to make a film here. CR became very excited that he would get an opportunity to compose music for Saigal. But he got a shock when he heard that not he, but one Lal Mohammed (assistant of Ghulam Hyder in Lahore) was being called for that assignment. C.Ramchandra not only was upset but felt hurt too. He went to Jayant Desai and said-
” My salary must be increased”
” How much ?”
” One Thousand Rupees per month”
Jayant was not ready for 1000. he offered maximum 600. He also told C Ramchandra that there was an opportunity to compose for Saigal, but C.Ramchandra was not ready to accept anything less than 1000.

Finally, C Ramchandra said,” Increase it to 1000 or else….”
Jayant Desai was furious. He asked,” Or else…What ?”
C.Ramchandra said,” Or else,I will quit”.
Without batting an eyelid,Jayant Desai coolly said,” OK. Your account will be settled in an hour. Stop work and pack up.”

C.Ramchandra was stunned, but the arrow had already left the bow !

C.Ramchandra became jobless and also lost an opportunity to compose music for Saigal. But his luck was strong. The very next day, kavi Pradeep took him to Filmistan and he was appointed there on a salary of Rs. 1000 pm. In Filmistan, C.Ramchandra gave several Hit musicals like Safar, Shehnai, Nadiya ke paar, Shabnam, Samadhi, Sargam, Anarkali, Nastik etc.

Miss Mala-54 had music by Chitragupta Shrivastav and his assistant was Dilip Dholakiya. There were 7 songs in the film and Kishore had 1 solo and 3 Duets.

A little known fact of this film’s music is that in one of the duets of Rafi and Asha,” Chori chori aana na khidki tale”, Rafi has given playback to Kishore in the last part of the song. This must be the earliest incident of Rafi singing for Kishore. Later on of course Rafi gave playback to Kishore in 7 more songs. Manna Dey sang for Kishore in 2 songs, S D Batish in 1 song and Classical singers Amanat Ali and Fateh Ali sang for Kishore in the film Ragini. The most interesting is that even Asha Bhonsale has given playback for Kishore. In the film ‘Baap re Baap’-1955,Kishore lipsyncs in Asha’s voice in the song -” Jaane bhi do” !

The cast of the film was Kishore Kumar, Vyjayantimala, Jeevan, Bipin Gupta, Umakant, Neeru etc.

The film is a story about an innocent young man Kishore, who is made to believe that he has murdered his own brother. Kishore has lost his memory. he goes for treatment to Dr. Kailash. On the second day of treatment, Dr. Kailash is killed by his rival Dr. Shukla, to whom Kishore goes for treatment next. Instead of curing him, Dr.Shukla, makes Kishore believe that he also murdered Dr. Kailash.

Kishore accidentally meets Miss Mala, a medical Student. Love develops and Mala decides to take Kishore for treatment herself. meanwhile Dr. Shukla sends Police to arrest Kishore. Mala and Kishore escape and go to Dr. Jeevan, mentor and guide of Mala and a psychiatrist. dr. Jeevan treats him and Kishore remembers that his brother had met an accidental death. he also rememberes how he saw Dr.Shukla killing Dr. Kailash. They all go to Police.

When Police go to arrest Dr.Shukla, they find him dead, having committed suicide to avoid arrest. he has left his acceptance of guilt letter.
All is well and Kishore and Miss Mala are united happily.

Now let us enjoy this duet from Miss Mala-54. Raja Mehdi Ali is the lyricist of this song.

Arunji,
How lucky you are to meet Vijayji, person with the same passion!!!
Thank you for the NineTEENth, last “teen” song under this series. Now Kishore Vintage will enter into twenties… 🙂
Atulji,
The missing word is “kar ke”. So, it should be
nadiya kinaare
jhoomte nazaare
kar ke ishaare
piyaa hum ko bulaayen
hum ko bulaayen

Dear Arunji,
The pleasure was mutual. I was amazed to see that you have taken your hobby so seriously… and also to see your dedication so complete that we get so much information that would have been lost for ever but for such blogs to which you contribute..
Coming to the song of the day, I remember having read sometime back your account of how Sardar Chandulalji died a pauper after having risen so high in the industry as a director and producer. In fact, I was wondering if you could do a series on the personalities that died in a sorry state after ruling as a STAR, like Chandramohan, Bharat Bhushan etc.
Please keep on the good work.
Vijay Kumar Gupta
