Juthika Roy (12 april 1920-5 february 2014) is a name that I became aware of sometime in the last decade when internet became a viable and a useful source of gaining and sharing information. But seeing that she mostly sang NFS and I was not interesting in NFS, I did not take any further interest in her songs at that time.
When this blog was begun, we only discussed movie songs in it. But soon enough we began to discuss NFS too and by now we have discussed over 100 NFS sung by more than 40 singers in the blog. Juthika Roy too figures in the blog with five song, most of them being NFS.
When I searched for information about Juthika Roy on internet, I was shocked and disappointed to know that there was hardly any information available on her. Her wikipedia page was a stub that had no worthwhile information on her. Even her date of birth was not available on wikipedia or at any other online resources. Under these circumstances, I search in our own blog. And lo and behold ! I managed to find about her date of birth in our own blog thanks to a writeup on Juthika Roy by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia. His writeup on Juthika Roy is easily the most comprehensive information on her on internet that I have been able to come across so far.
As a tribute to the legendary singer, here is an NFS sung by her. Kamal Dasgupta is the music director. I am unable to find about the lyricist of this song. My guess is that it is a Meera bhajan and so it should be attributed to Meera Bai. But I could be wrong. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the lyricist of this song as well as on the probable year of release of this song. I have provisionally assumed this song to be a 1950 release.
What a soothing voice ! Listening to this bhajan is a certain to calm one’s nerves and relax one’s mind.

I went back and re-read your earlier article with the song “Meri Veena Ro Rahi Hai”. Thanks for pulling together so much information.
A cassette of her bhajans was one of the first cassettes I had bought back in the 80s. It still is in my collection.
We are living in times where we are witnessing the passing away of the golden age of Hindi films and music. The masters and legends slowly bidding farewell and moving on with journey. They say nature abhors vaccuum. But the vaccumm created by the departure of these legends, even nature will not be able to fill. There aren’t any comparable replacements. The period of the 1900s was the era of pioneers, believers in the divinity of their art, and were pure practitioners. What has followed is simply the imitators sans originality.
Now just the memories remain. And the small consolation that the sounds and images are with us.
Dear Sudhir ji,
Thanks for your comments.
I am glad that informations provided by me come handy in needs.
This, precisely,is my attempt-To make this Blog a storehouse of information so unique that this should become a REFERENCE POINT for the students of Film and Music History,in future.
Juthika Roy’s Bhajans and NFS are with what I grew up in the 40s and 50s. We had many of her records in our stock. My Uncles and Father, all of us were simply Bhakts of her songs.
Your observation about the disappearance of Vintage singers and music makers is right. But this is the Natural Cycle.” The New gives way to the Old”- though not necessarily of the same type.Vacancies are always filled up. May be we are not accustomed to the coming
type of Music !

When I read your in depth blogs/comments on Indian (Hindi) Film Industry Song and find comments therein that “no information is available on this or that film/artist/singer/music director/lyricist etc.”, I feel that you have not attempted (I may be wrong) to take help or use the great source of information, that is to say NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF INDIA which has been modernized and information, if available, can be retrieved instantly.
She has an autobiography. It is “ My World of Music”. Published by Bharatiya Vidysa Bhavan. Juthika Roy wrote it in Bengali. This a translation by Gita Chaidhri
This blog discusses Bollywood songs of yesteryears. Every song has a brief description, followed by a video link, and complete lyrics of the song.
This is a labour of love, where “new” songs are added every day, and that has been the case for over FOURTEEN years. This blog has over 17400 song posts by now.
This blog is active and online for over 5000 days since its beginning on 19 july 2008.
