Movies, Indian as well as foreign, often deal with characters expressing their love for their beloved. This process is quite straightforward in “English” movies. Boy and girl look at each other’s eyes and then they kiss, and that is all. Or in more elaborate scenes, the boy says, “I love You”, and that is the end of the matter as far as expression of love is concerned.

But Indians are different and so are their movies. If Indians embark on some activity, be it in their private matters or on matters of national importance, they must do it in the most elaborate and complicated manner possible. For instance, if gareebi is to be hataaoed from the country, then the process must take decades if not centuries and must pass through elaborate lengthy processes such as five year plans, various Yojanas and schemes etc, with only window dressed statistics to show for at the end of several decades.

If the hero and heroine in a Hindi movie have to express their love for each other, it should similarly pass through tortuous labyrinthine stages lasting the entire length of the movie. The process may begin with teasing and resentment, then misunderstanding, then parental disapproval, villain coming in the picture. Long lost relatives, court scenes, songs of different genres also get thrown in the mixture for good measure. 🙂

Here is a cute case where it is the girl who is expressing her love for her beloved. She is not doing it face to face though, but from behind a curtain (chilman- as they say in Urdu), and in a roundabout “beating about the bush” manner, which is the standard way of expressing one’s love in Hindi movies.

The lady is Rehana and the addressee is Prem Adib. The lyrics by Nakshab are quite cute. Shamshad Begam is the singer. Music is composed by Shyam Sundar.

As can be expected, this expression of love does not bear instant fruit as happens in most Indian ventures in any field. She has to pass through processes of heart break, misunderstanding, competition from unexpected quarters, no less than ten song situations etc. 🙂

Here is this sixth song from “Actress” (1948). I had heard this song before, without being aware of its details, and I was under the impression that this song was already discussed. And as is often the case with me, I was mistaken in myy impression.

So here is this cute song from “Actress” (1948).

Song-Majnu bane hain…dil mein rehte hain (Actress)(1948) Singer-Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Nakshab, MD-Shyam Sundar

Lyrics

majnu bane hain
laila ko pehchaante nahin ee
laila pe kya gujarti hai
ye jaante hain
dil mein rehte hain
dil mein rehte hain
unhen dil ki khabar nahin
kya unse apna haal main keh doon
magar nahin
dil mein rehte hain
dil mein rehte hain
unhen dil ki khabar nahin
kya unse apna haal main keh doon
magar nahin
dil mein rehte hain

dil deke unko chain se
dam bhar na reh sake
dil deke unko chain se
dam bhar na reh sake
nazren kabhi milin thhin
nazren kabhi milin thhin
magar ye na keh sakey
magar ye na keh sakey
dil mein siwaaye unke
dil mein siwaaye unke
kisi ka guzar nahin
kya unse apna haal main keh doon
magar nahin
dil mein rehte hain
dil mein rehte hain

dil ki to kya khabar unhen
itna nahin pata
dil ki to kya khabar unhen
itna nahin pata
chhup chhup ke dekhta hai
chhup chhup ke dekhta hai
koi unki har ada
koi unki har ada
wo bekhabar samajhte hain
wo bekhabar samajhte hain
main bekhabar nahin
kya unse apna haal main keh doon
magar nahin
dil mein rehte hain
dil mein rehte hain

jee chaahta hai unse kahen
dil ki aarzoo
jee chaahta hai unse kahen
dil ki aarzoo
ho jaaye aaj unse
ho jaaye aaj unse
muhabbat ki guftgoo
muhabbat ki guftgoo
dil dil se mil gaya
dil dil se mil gaya
to zamaane ka dar nahin
kya unse apna haal main keh doon
magar nahin
dil mein rehte hain
dil mein rehte hain
unhen dil ki khabar nahin
kya unse apna haal main keh doon
magar nahin
dil mein rehte hain
dil mein rehte hain

You have nicely narrated the story. It was like old wine in a new bottle. Good packaging.
