“Bandhan” (1940) was a Bombay Talkies production. It had Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis in lead roles in this movie. Suresh, V H Desai, Arun Kumar etc were some of the other actors in it.

Today (6 february 2014) is the 99th birth anniversary of Kavi Pradeep (6 february 1915-11 december 1998). On this occasion, here is a song from “Bandhan” (1940).
This song is sung by Arun Kumar Mukherji. The picturisation shows Ashok Kumar leaving in a bullockcart and this song plays in the background while Leena Chitnis, a chanazor garam seller (who lip syns the famous song Chane jor garam babu earlier in the movie) and a few kids look on and miss him.
Kavi Pradeep is the lyricist. Music is composed by Saraswati Devi.

This song was very popular during forties. My elder sister and brother (and I joined them little later) used to sing this song at the time of ‘bidaayee’ of brides in my hometown. There were no mikes in those days so I was trained to sing with my shrill child voice in one octave higher with them. When I visited my hometown after a long break recently, I was surprised to find some very seniors remembering it and even requested me to sing few lines of that song. With wet eyes i obliged them.

My father’s fav song picturised on his fav hero. Remember his face would glow whenever he heard a song from a movie of AK, Saigal sahab, Pankaj Mullick, Chandramohan, Devika Rani, Shanta Apte, Khursheed… While listening to a song on the radio, he would narrate the scene of that song and tell us story of the movie in brief.
