“Kabhi Andhera Kabhi Ujaala” (1958) was directed by C P Dixit for Mehtab Films. The movie had Kishore Kumar, Nutan, Chitra, Shekhar, Kumkum, Lalita Pawar, K. N. Singh, Helen, Yakub, Madan Puri etc in it.

Three songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the fourth song from “Kabhi Andhera Kabhi Ujaala” (1958). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picrturisation of this song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

PS-HFGK mentions that this song has a second part as well viz. Dilon ka rishta hai aisa rishta”, but the record number of that song is not mentioned. So it appears that this part was there in the movie and its records were not made. I have not been able to locate this version of the song.

Song-Ajab hamaari hai zindagaani (Kabhi Andhera Kabhi Ujaala)(1958) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

ajab hamaari hai zindagaani ee
kabhi andhera kabhi ujaaala

ajab hamaari hai zindagaani
kabhi andhera kabhi ujaala
hai ye jo jeewan ki ik kahaani
kabhi andhera kabhi ujaala

kabhi hai milna
kabhi bichhadna
kabhi hai rona
kabhi hai gaana
kabhi hai milna
kabhi bichhadna
kabhi hai rona
kabhi hai gaana
hai khwaab aisa yeh zindagaani
kabhi andhera kabhi ujaala
hai bekhudi gham ki ik kahaani
kabhi andhera kabhi ujaala

kabhi toh mausam judaayi kaa hai
kabhi hain ghadiyaan madhur milan ki
kabhi toh mausam judaayi kaa hai
kabhi hain ghadiyaan madhur milan ki
hai gham ki manzil to aani jaani
kabhi andhera kabhi ujaala
hai ye jo jeewan ki ek kahaani
kabhi andhera kabhi ujaala

The shehnai surs are really soothing to frayed nerves. Philosophical and autobiograhical..

Thumbnail of the song given above rightly says-Composition by Nayyar who rarely goes for sad songs. When I tried to filter out sad songs of Nayyar known to me, I could stumble upon very few.To immediate benefit of blog regulars I am mentioning them: 1-Phagun-Tum rooth ke mat jana,Barso re,Sun ja pukar 2-Mr.& Mrs 55-Preetam aan milo 3-Phir Wahi dil Laya Hoon-Mujhe pyar mein tum na ilzam 4-Raagni-Man mora bawra 5-Sone Ki Chidiya-Raat bhar ka hai mehman andhera 6-Sone Ki Chidiya-Bekas ki tabahi 7-Bhagam Bhag-Humen koi ghum hai 8-Mitti Mein Sona-Poochho na humen hum

“Sambandh” (1968) has some nice sad songs as well.

Absolutely, and sung very well by Mahender Kapoor, e.g. Are o roshaniwalon & Bachpan udhar de do. And the brilliant philosophical one: Chal akela

Add ‘Mujhe dekho hasrat ki tasveer hoon main’ from Baaz.

And even more: Ae dil ai diwaane also from Baaz.

Thanks Atulji and Dilipji for really nice additions.
