It is now a time tested experience. If I need to locate a real gem of a song for a particular artist, I simply search for one in completely obscure films that one may have just heard of. This technique has served well on many occasions in the past. And once again today. For this post, I wanted to locate a song that befits the memories of the artist. And as I checked out the films, I narrowed down on this one – ‘Dark Street’ from 1961. As I checked the song lists of this film, sure enough, hiding away here in this almost unknown film is this gem of a melody that is created by Dattaram.

Remembering Dattaram on the anniversary of his passing away today (8th June).

Mention of his name brings to mind immediately the fabulous melody of “Masti Bhara Hai Samaa” and “Bole Ye Dil Ka Ishaara” ). A composer of peerless melodies, Dattaram worked for long years as the assistant and music arranger for Shankar Jaikishan. Everywhere in the film ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’, the traditional percussion sounds of the ‘daff’ instrument are all his handiwork. Just listen to the song “Mera Naam Raju Gharaana Anaam” . The beat of the ‘daff’ is the backbone and the life of this song.

His first assignment as an independent music director came in 1957 with the film ‘Ab Dilli Door Nahin’. The film may not have been very successful, but the songs of this film have stood the test of time. In 1958, with reference from Raj Kapoor, he was given the charge of compositions for the film ‘Parvarish’. An interesting episode from this film is about a song that was created almost very casually, which turned out to be one of the best loved melancholia in the voice of Mukesh. On the day of recording, when Dattaram and Mukesh reached the studio, they found that the instrumentalists were on strike. There were no musicians available to play for the recording. Almost on the verge of cancelling the recording, Dattaram suggested to just try and record with what was available. Dattaram played the taal on the tabla and one more musician who turned up was the saarangi player Zahur Ahmed. The entire song was recorded with just these two instruments, and only one musician each on the instruments. Dattaram and Mukesh, although went through with the recording, did not pin much hopes on the song, and were thinking that a re-recording will be required. But when the recording was played back, and Raj Kapoor listened to it, they realized that they had created a winner. Even today, after five and half decades, no selection of Mukesh’s sad songs is complete without “Aansoo Bhari Hain Ye Jeevan Ki Raahen”.

After that came some pleasing music from films like ‘Shriman Satyawadi’ (1960), ‘First Love’ (1961), ‘Zindagi Aur Khwab’ (1961), ‘Neeli Aankhen’ (1962) and ‘Jabse Tumhe Dekha Hai’ (1963). But then getting more and more sidelined and relegated to stunt films, he continued thru the decade of 1960 and then bid an adieu to his career as an independent music director after the film ‘Ek Din Aadhi Raat’ (1971). It seems as if the main reason for this was the strong imprint of the Shankar Jaikishan in almost all the music that he created. It is ironical that his presence in the S-J team gave life to so many fabulous songs, but when he tried to create a similar effect on his own, the listener’s did not pay much attention to this S-J sound alike.

This song from the film ‘Dark Street’ is sung by Suman Kalyanpur. The film has two lyricists – Indiwar and Gulshan Bawra. However, the poet of this song is not specifically identified. A lilting melody, this song is a listening pleasure and a fond memory from the radio days. Listen and enjoy.

Song-Pyaar se dekhe jo koi (Dark Street)(1961) Singer-Suman Kalyanpur, MD-Dattaram

Lyrics

pyaar se dekhe jo koi
pyaar se dekhe jo koi
behak behak jaaun main
pyaar se dekhe jo koi
behak behak jaaun main
chameli ki daali jaise
lachak lachak jaaun main
chameli ki daali jaise
lachak lachak jaaun main
pyaar se dekhe jo koi

koi nazar dil mein dard uthaaye
koi nazar dil mein dard uthaaye
jaise kiran kaliyon ko jagaaye
jaise kiran kaliyon ko jagaaye
haaye kisi ki hansi kya hansi hai
haaye kisi ki hansi kya hansi hai
mujhko yakeen ab khud pe nahin hai
mujhko yakeen ab khud pe nahin hai
pyaar se dekhe jo koi
behak behak jaaun main
pyaar se dekhe jo koi
behak behak jaaun main
chameli ki daali jaise
lachak lachak jaaun main
chameli ki daali jaise
lachak lachak jaaun main
pyaar se dekhe jo koi

pyaar ke jab koi bol sunaaye
pyaar ke jab koi bol sunaaye
halka halka nasha mujh pe chhaaye
halka halka nasha mujh pe chhaaye
aur bhi ho jaaye chaal sharaabi
aur bhi ho jaaye chaal sharaabi
aankhon mein pad jaayen dorey gulaabi
aankhon mein pad jaayen dorey gulaabi
pyaar se dekhe jo koi
behak behak jaaun main
chameli ki daali jaise
lachak lachak jaaun main
chameli ki daali jaise
lachak lachak jaaun main
pyaar se dekhe jo koi

Sudhirji,
Yep it was very popular on the radio.
I heard/read and remembered correctly in an interview uploaded on UTube, Dattaram said he conducted the orchestra for dil tadap tadap ke in absence of Salilda. A talented and melodious MD.

Sudhirji,
Thanks for the nice post and lovely song. It carries the Dattaram stamp, especially the Dholak beats.

My Swar and Hindi Geet Mala mentions the lyricists as Indeevar.

One small quibble. You have mentioned that the song, Aansoo Bhari Hain Ye Jeevan Ki Raahen, was recorded with just two instruments. This
song was one of my favourite Mukesh’s songs during my college days. I have listened to the songs several times then and later. There was one more instrument played in the prelude and interludes, namely the sitar. Can you please check and confirm.

Sudhir ji, Every time you discuss a song in these columns from the era of 1960s, I become overjoyed. You take me down the Memory Lane and make me nostalgic. The clock sets backwards and to go back and relive those old moments is really such a pleasure which can not be expressed . I was mature enough to like and appreciate these songs when they were aired on Radio in 1960s. So,probably, these songs appeal to me more than to those who were, then, too young to enjoy them. This particular song had almost gone below my memory horizon but then you brought it up.Thanks.The other song from Dark Street-Itne Bade Jahan Mein Apna Bhi…… also sung by Suman Kalyanpur is equally refreshing. Both are nice hummable songs with nice music by Datta Ram who had earlier gifted us unforgettable numbers in Boot Polish,First Love,Qaidi No 911 and Zindagi Aur Khwab also.
