On 30 january 2011, I received an e mail in my inbox. This contents of the email warmed the cockles of my heart and made my day. The e mail read
Hi Atul,
Wonderful site. A very useful & handy reference tool, too. I browse it regularly for my dose of golden oldies, rare gems, lyrics, song info or just to surprise myself. The days of yore studded with glittering jewels such as Radio Ceylon/SLBC & Vividh are sorely missed.
One thing that I notice & love about your blog is the painstaking indexing & categorisation of the content & the accuracy of material, esp. lyrics. Generally, the lyrics are free from errors, authentic and spelled brilliantly. Only a person of language can do such justice to transliterating hindi into english with admirable precision & exactness.
I’m sure you devote a considerable amount of time to build up and maintain this blog. As I do consult this blog from time to time, to repay the favour and as a token of my gratitude, I would like to offer my assistance in keeping this blog ticking over. What I can do for this blog is to submit a song’s lyrics & youtube link directly to you. After your approval & review, you may post it on to the blog alongwith your usual valuable & insightful comments.
Thank you indeed.
Atif.
N.B.: I am submitting a song below.

It is somewhat like the train approaching a station. I am very sure, all of us have had this experience, whenever we have gone to receive some body at the railway station, or gone to the station to start a train journey. There is a whole variety of actions and emotions we associate with this event. These days, the availability of mobile phones has made communicating much easier. But earlier it used to be different. One would start calling up the railway enquiry at least one hour before the expected arrival time. Connecting with that number and getting information used to be a trying task in itself. Then based on the information so received, one would plan to go to the station, depending on the distance. And we are all familiar with the pedantic and meticulous souls who would start this enquiry many hours in advance.

June 30th is the date of the publication of Saratchandra Chaterjee’s famous novel Devdas. It was published in 1917, thus we celebrated its 97th birthday on 30 june this year (2014). Devdas has, like no other novel before it or after, captured the imagination of film-makers in India. According to Wikipedia, there have been 16 films based on this story. Two of them have been made in Pakistan and Bangladesh each.

The mention of this name brings to mind, the mindless sidelining and disregard of talent that was ever the most gifted and capable. But that is life – the unfortunate unkindness it metes out to some people is beyond our intelligence to understand. Comes to mind the lines of Meera Bai’s bhajan –
Koel Kar Dini Kaali
Santo, Karman Ki Gati Nyaari
That the Koel bird is endowed with such a beautiful voice that is incomparable, but the same Maker also made it black and ugly, such are the vagaries of destiny.
