In olden days, communctions and transportation facilities were not what they are today. Most people used to remain confined to their native places for much of their lives and they did not know how people lived in other parts of the world. So they would be curious to find out about the other parts of the world. One would do that by watching movies and also by talking to people who may have come from other places.

Mythological films have been an important part of Indian films since long and this was evident from the fact that there was hardly any production house that did not make a Mythological film. The period of 1940 to 1965 can be called an age of meaningful religious films. In this too, the 1950 to 1960 period was the peak period for this genre. Later on the production of such films dwindled and these days, of course, one has to make efforts to find such a film, with a large magnifying glass !

‘Mammo’ (1994), ‘Sardari Begum’ (1996) and ‘Zubeida’ (2OO1) were films of Muslim trilogy directed by Shyam Bengal. The main feature of these three films was that they were all woman oriented films based on real life stories. These films belonged to what is labelled as parallel cinemas. I have watched all the three films. Why these films are called trilogy? Let us go through in brief, the stories of each of the main characters in these films.

(1972 – Duet)

Here is the duet that I have selected from 1972. Another peerless and lovely memory from the radio listening days. A song that is softly composed and softly rendered in a leisurely pace. Asha Bhosle accompanies Rafi Sb in the singing. The film is ‘Parchhaaiyaan’, the lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music composition is by RD Burman. On screen, this song is performed by Vinod Khanna, a new comer heroine, Reshma. A name that I am not familiar with at all. Apparently she appeared in not many films. Given the on screen presence, it is likely she did not make any lasting impressions at all.

(1972 – Solo)

Coming to the 1972 installment of this series. The song that I have selected is in the same genre as yesterday’s solo. Yesterday, it was “Ye Shor Hai Gali Gali, Ke Wo Jawaan Ho Chali”, telling about a young lass stepping into the age of youth. The song today tells the same story, this time about a girl named Reshma.

Today’s song is from film Maldaar-1951. It was an obscure film which no one remembers now. The songs of this film were composed by a young Satish Bhatia. Songs were quite good. Unfortunately, 1951 was a period when the HFM was in its Golden period and Ek se badhkar Ek melodious songs were offered to the people by well known composers.

The streets of cities and town all around India looked deserted, when from 25 January 1987 to 31 July 1988, “Mangal Bhavan Amangalhaarri” was heard on Doordarshan TV, The title of the famous Serial ‘Ramayana’. Initially Jaidev-ji was the MD for the serial, but soon after his death, Ravindra Jain took over the responsibility. Most of us had enjoyed the serial enormously.
