Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 3

(1972 – Solo)

Coming to the 1972 installment of this series. The song that I have selected is in the same genre as yesterday’s solo. Yesterday, it was “Ye Shor Hai Gali Gali, Ke Wo Jawaan Ho Chali”, telling about a young lass stepping into the age of youth. The song today tells the same story, this time about a girl named Reshma.

I remember this song had caught my fancy after listening on the radio. It was school years when this song started to air on the radio waves. With hearts and mind and emotions in an infancy, it was not an age the I would decipher the intentions and the import of the words of these songs and how they were presented on screen. I never did see this picture when it was released, or even later. I got to see this much later, as I was building my movie collection and the curious thing about this film was the two songs that have been sung by lyricist Anand Bakshi. I got around to seeing this film almost 3 decades after its release.

A catchy tune and a surefire pace. For some reason, my mind had placed this song in the hills and mountains. Of course when I saw it finally, I came to know this to be a garden-variety-around-the-trees-and-fountains type of song. An interesting thing that I remember about this song is that a classmate of mine was also very taken in by this song. And he used to sing these lines coyly, especially when a certain girl, who was in another section, would be close by. At first I did not make out his intentions. We simply used to laugh at him when he would sing this. But then when I realized what he was actually attempting, I was scandalized. These were things that only adults could do. And of course, the singing part was confined to films, since I had never till then, seen someone in real life serenade a beloved with a song. Tiny fun memories that I remember with relish, and wonder about the naiveté of that age.

The film is ‘Mome Ki Gudiya’. The lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and the music by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. The onscreen performance is by an actor with name Ratan Chopra. An unfamiliar name, it seems as if this was the only picture he appeared in as a hero. What an opportunity to be cast opposite to Tanuja, who was in the prime of her career at that time. After seeing the visual of the song, I felt we used to be so blessed to be introduced to such lovely gems on the radio. The mind would be free to conjure up the images of the people and the locations, and create a very complete and perfect image of how the songs would have been filmed. Sometimes, seeing the song on screen simply demolishes that perfect image of that song that would be so wonderfully visualized in the mind based just on the audio.

Anyways. A lovely memory from radio listening days. The voice of Rafi Sb at his vigorous best.

Listen and enjoy.

Song-Reshma jawaan ho gayi (Mom Ki Gudiya)(1972) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

ladki punjab di
mauj chanaab di
le ke angdaaiaan
pankhari gulaab di oye
teer kamaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi
hoye teer kamaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi
ladki punjab di
mauj chanaab di
le ke angdaaiaan
pankhari gulaab di oye
teer kamaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi
hoye teer kamaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi

o rabb jhooth na bulaaye
haay
jhooth na bulaaye
pehle to hans hans ke milti thhi sab se
jab se bahaar aayi baagon mein tab se
guzre wo door se
darey mulaaqaat se
baaton hi baaton mein
chhoti si baat se wo
ik daastaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi
hoye teer kamaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi

o rabb jhooth na bulaaye
taubaa jhooth na bulaaye
nikli thhi ghar se
jaane kis kaam se
kisi ne pukaar liya
raste mein naam se
mil gayi aankh jo
kisi manmeet se
gusse mein rooth ke
maaiye ke geet se oye
thumri ki taan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi
hoye teer kamaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi

o rabb jhooth na bulaaye
kaddee jhooth na bulaaye
ye mausam bhi hai uska deewaana
roop ka rasiyaa hai saara zamaana
aanchal hawaaon ne
thoda sarkaa diya
kaajal ghataaon ne
zaraa bikhraa diya oye
rut beimaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi
hoye teer kamaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi
reshma jawaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi ee
reshma jawaan ho gayi

And the location is Mysore’s Brindavan Gardens. It would be an interesting study to see how many films of 1970s were shot there. PADOSAN, comes readily to mind. Plus all films (nearly all) made in south during 1970s & 1980s had at least one song picturised there.

Whenever I had been to Brindavan I have seen shooting of Hindi and South India movies. Except for the last time.
Now It has gone to dogs. The flowers have wilted and trees are dried up. Please do not take your parents as one has to walk compulsorily for few kilometres

I remember Ratan Chopra in Mumtaz`s Aaina(1977),performing a character with grey shades. In that movie, he played the role of Mumtaz`s younger sister`s prospective bridegroom and also as an customer of Mumtaz(as in the movie Mumtaz play the role of a prostitute who in order to take care of her Joint family, sell herself)

Tanuja had made (or messed?) the career out of working with nobodies like Kaysi Mehra (Mem Didi), Hamari Yaad Aayegi (Ashok Sharma), Rajeev (Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal), Kashinath Ghanekar (Daadi Maa), Sailesh Kumar (Nai Roshni, Jiyo Aur Jeene Do, Oss Raat Ke Baad), Salim Durrani (Ek Masoom), Ratan Chopra (Mom Ki Gudiya), etc.
