Assalaam u alaikum wa rehmatullahi wa barakatahu
Walaikum as salaam wa rehmatullahi wa barakatahu

First is the salutation for greeting and second is the reply. Both the greeting and reply mean ‘May Allah be with you and keep you safe and sound, with his mercy and bountiful blessings ‘. There are different pronunciation used all over the world by people of different regions and linguistic groups.

And peevisie’s Mom ji, if I remember correctly than Amitabh Bachchan did mispronounce it as ‘Assalam walekum’ in the dialogue you referred here in his attempt to sound like a Pathan in “khuda gawaah’. Still he managed to do a lot better than Sridevi, dubbed dialogues not withstanding. So even if pronounced or spelled differently inadvertently, as long as the wishing intention is the same, it may be fine provided God is willing and accepting the prayer. And it is a prayer wishing each other peace and security.

Yes he did go over the board ,with double roles and triple roles and some really badly made movies in the 90’s. Movies like ‘Zanjeer’, ‘Deewar’ and ‘Bemisaal’ are the better defined characters I like to remember him by. ‘Trishul’ , ‘Shakti ‘ and ‘Abhiman’ were also those well written and directed movies which made him the legend. In the late 70s and 80’s he diversified into comic , action and romantic hero’s characters. With his comedy alone he managed to nullify the role of the comedienne in the movies for many years, till Johnny Lever managed to recover some ground. Still the ‘Comedienne ‘ character actors have not regained the status of crowd pullers which they lost with the advent of Amitabh Bachhan, the action, comedy romance superstar. Personally, I havent liked much of his comedy and have to think hard to come with a decent comic hero role which he did. I can only recall ‘Namak Halaal’ and ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ .
Films like ‘Shahenshah’ and ‘Kaalia’ were slightly better than the other trash movie moguls were churning out with Amitabh Bachchan in the lead.

11th October was Amitabh Bachchan’s 72nd birthday and I sent the lyrics of this song from Naseeb(1980). But this song did not get posted that day. This is a ‘ drukard song where Amitabh Bachchan is singing for himself and Rishi Kapoor who is the younger brother is singing in the voice of Rafi, with some dialogues in his own voice. So technically it is a truet of Amitabh, Rafi and Rishi Kapoor. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmikant – Pyarelal are the music directors.

My last post was this song Chanda dekhe chanda o chanda sharmaaye which appeared on 03/10/2014. It has been a while, but I have written this present song posts in parts. I neglected completion of this post due to various reasons, one of them is that things have been a bit crazy on the work front. The department is undergoing a major ‘ shake up ‘. It was expected and when such changes are implemented, some of the employees do benefit. It will take sometime but things will settle down eventually.

Meanwhile, the activity in other sphere’s of life must go on as far as possible. As the blog too is an integral part of my life, so here I am and here the post of a crazily drunk but well composed song from the film ‘Naseeb’ (1980) It has these lines that I mentioned in the last post

chaand huaa awaaraa
subaah ka nikla taara

I could not remember any other film song specifically mentioning ‘ the morning star ‘. But knowing the versatile poetic ‘ zakhera ‘ that is the hindi film music, I decided to look for ‘subaah ka tara’ song . I found a film named ‘Subaah ka taara’ (1954) with a title song, a duet of Talat Mehmood – Lata Mangeshkar. This is ‘gaya andhera huaa ujaala chamka chamka subaah ka taara ‘ posted here

On this positive note, here is wishing everyone a very happy and safe Diwali. May this happy season bring the best health & wealth, better value system for the society and good life for all of us.

I think if the actor has mispronounced any dialogues then he should be blamed as there are number of people like dialogue writers, dialogue instructors, speech instructors involved who could have said CUT but did not.

Hullo Nahmji
thank you for correcting my urdu. o i love to learn the right way of speaking it. whatever little i know is form the movies. and yes i agree with Nitinbhai also — if an actor mispronounces then the experts on the sets should help rectify it. atleast in the dubbing stage. otherwise people like me will learn the language wrong.
also thank you for this song which i was planning to send to atul for AB Sr.’s birthday but then zeroed in on the other one as it was from an earlier movie.
i remember that when this movie was released in ’81 the TV promo (those days they used to be called ads) of it showed a clip of AB with headphones in the recording studio with Rafi saab. and much later in an interview AB has said how he had the jitters as he had to record with Rafi and that made him all the more conscious of his “besurappan”
thank u Nahmji

I know that the last post is your favourite , but failed to reply to any of the comments on the page.

Regarding mispronouncements of words in dialogues, maybe no one dared to interrupt a dubbing of AB. To give credit to him, he did work hard and is known for his voice and dialogue delivery too. I say this because this dialogue apart, he was a perfectionist in the era when perfection had already gone out of fashion.

And now it is fashionable to mispronounce words.

For urdu words and to understand them better, you have a easy way. You can watch the dramas on ‘Zindagi’ channel . They also give meanings of some less known words on screen which appear in conversations.

Jaan kar achha lagaa ki aap ko ye post pasand aaya.
