“You see sir, I can walk English, I can talk English, I can laugh English.”
“Aaj khush toh bahut honge tum”
“Main aaj bhi phenke huye paise nahin uthata”
“Sar zameene Hindustan, aa salaam walekum”. (Nahmji I know I may have written the salutation wrong, but I hope my intention has been conveyed)

These are some powerful dialogues of Amitabh Bachchan, who turned 72 yesterday(11 october 2014). He was a horrible dancer when he made his debut in movies. There is this anecdote which keeps playing on the TV channels where Aruna Irani his co actor in “Bombay To Goa” (1971/72) has narrated how Mehmood the maker of the movie had instructed every one not to laugh at any mistakes Amitabh would commit in the dance sequences. She also goes on to appreciate how over the years he managed to shake a leg or two without making a buffoon of himself. Infact a lot of later year actors who try to ape him on the way to stardom and are not comfortable dancers, also ape his dance steps. And there were many of that breed of actors in the late 70s, 80s and 90s.

His comic timing in many of his movies was also appreciated. And the way he looked at his heroines during the romantic scenes made one weak in the knees. I remember the scene in “Khuddar” (1982) where Sanjeev Kumar (his bichuda hua elder brother) comes to meet him in jail; both the brothers cry to show their emotions and it was a matter of discussion among my friends –who cried better? Then of course there are many fans of his running style, (and mind you in all the years of watching movies I have seen many actors run).

Actually I think the “Angry Young Man” tag for this actor is a misnomer. He was angry in very few of his movies in his younger days. He was an all-rounder (IMHO) who made very poor selection of movies. He is doing better movies nowadays, and I don’t know which to call his best work till date. Loved him in “Black”, “Paa” and the little bit that I have seen of “The Last Lear” (this was completely in English).

I know anyone reading this write up will say “yeh toh Amitabh ki Deewani hain”. I don’t mind. I find him cute even in “Kaun Banega Karodpati”. Oh let me clarify he has done around 200 movies (I think) till date and I have not seen all of them. I can’t stand him in a few movies that he did in the 90s. But ok we forgive our favourites their small mistakes, I suppose.

The song that I choose to unleash on the blog on the occasion of his birthday is one of the first where he has given his voice along with the lead singer Mukesh in Adalat (1976). Here his co actors were Neetu Singh and his own personal favourite (read about this somewhere ages ago) Waheeda Rehman. This song is picturised on Sujit Kumar, Anwar Hussain, and Hina Kausar and a horde of villagers. I think the third person who played the villain is Suresh. The music directors were Kalyanji Anandji and lyricist was Gulshan Bawra. After this Amitabh has sung alongside Mohd. Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar.

Here is wishing him a lot of good health. And a very Happy Birthday

Song-Hamka aisa waisa na samjho ham bade kaam ki cheez (Adalat)(1976) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Gulshan Bawra, MD-Kalyanji Anandji
Amitabh Bachchan

are hamka kaa samjhat ho,
kaa kaha
kaa samjhat ho

hamka aisa waisa naa samjho
ham bade kaam kee cheez
hamka aisa waisa naa samjho
ham bade kaam kee cheez
o baabu bade kaam kee cheez
kaun bura hai
kaun bhala hai
arre kaun bura hai
kaun bhala hai
hamka hai tameez
hamka aisa waisa naa samjho
ham bade kaam kee cheez
o babu bade kaam kee cheez

aare ek din ham gaye jungle ma,
arae ek din ham gaye jungle ma,
uhaan mil gaye hamka daaku
susra mil gaye hamka daaku
kisi ke haath ma barcha bhala,
kisi ke haath ma chaku
haan haan
kisike haath ma chaaku
hamne poochha
arre hamne puchha,
kitne ho tum
tab woh boley das
ham kaha bas,
kaa kaha

aisa haath jamaaya
do gaj dharti ma gaye dhnas dhans dhans
hamka aisa waisa naa samjho
ham bade kam kee cheez
hamka aisa waisa naa samjho
ham bade kam kee cheez
o baabu bade kaam kee cheez

arre ik din apne gaanv ma
arre ik din apne gaanv ma
ek mem sahar se aayi
ak mem sahar se aayi
dekh ke apni mast jawaani
mann maa woh muskaayi
arre mann maa woh muskaayi
bade pyaar se
arre bade pyaar se
usne hamka diya gulaabi phool
ham kaha
ee kaa det ho hamka,
kaa det ho

haath jodkar phir woh boli
ho gayi hamse bhool bhool bhool
hamka aisa waisa naa samjho
ham bade kam kee cheez
hamka aisa waisa naa samjho
ham bade kam kee cheez
o babu bade kam kee cheez
kaun bura hai
kaun bhala hai
arre kaun bura hai
kaun bhala hai
hamka hai tameez
hamka aisa waisa naa samjho
ham bade kaam kee cheez
bhaiya bade kaam kee cheez
o babua bade kaam kee cheez

Yes madam
the third villain is SURESH(I think he is the vetern hero starred opposite vyjayanthimala in Yasmin(1955)

@ Peevesie’s mom ji – nice post !! and thanks for unleashing this song 🙂

Peevesie’s mom ji,
Many thanks for the song and the post.
I was planning to send this song for quite a while, but kept on postponing.
Its almost a duet of Mukesh with Big B and unique in its own way.
