The title of the post is a sure giveaway. You must have guessed it right away, this song is a dentist’s song. Correct and very right.
In this second episode of the ‘promised’ entertaining sales pitch songs, today I present this comical self advertisement being resorted to by a dentist, at whose clinic, inflow of patients has been very low, and he has his wife complaining about the household budget and rising prices – well, way back in 1963, fifty years ago. 🙂 So his friend suggests to him to take his business to the people. And in a Hindi film, the best vehicle to do that is to have a song. And here it is.
The film is ‘Begaana’ from 1963. The lead actors are Dharmendra and Supriya Chaudhry. Others in the star cast are Shailesh Kumar, Madhavi, Tarun Bose, Agha, Badri Prasad, Manorama, Mirza Mushsarraf, Chandrima Bhaduri, Rajan Haksar and Master Babloo. The story is about a child born out of wedlock, being taken in by the doctor (role played by Tarun Bose) who attends to the delivery, and raises him as his own. The good doctor falls ill himself, and the guardianship of the child is taken up by his friend, the dentist, role played by Agha. On screen, the song is performed by Agha as Dr. Khanna, the dentist. Manorama plays his nagging wife who ill treats the foster child in her household and complains about the rising prices. Mirza Musharraf is his think-tank friend who gives him the idea to take to the street to advertise for himself. And of course the performance rendered by Agha, is as expected. We also see the rotund Moolchand, the one who slips on the bannana peel. Great comic relief.
‘Begaana’ is the debut film for the music director duo Sapan Jagmohan. When I read this name in the credits, I had this feeling that this could be their debut film. I checked and the hunch is confirmed. The film has some outstanding melodies, and became a very opportune debut for this music director duo. Four songs from this film are already posted here, all of them absolutely fabulous – “Bulaati Hai Bahaar” in the voice of Lata, “Phir Wo Bhooli Si Yaad Aayi Hai” in the voice of Rafi, “Na Jaane Kahaan Kho Gayaa Wo Zamaana” in the voice of Mukesh, and a very hummable duet in the voices of Lata and Usha Mangeshkar – “Aaye Gayo Morey Mann Bhaaye Gayo”.
The lyrics are by Shailendra. And the lyrics have to be heard with attention. The poet has painted a wonderfully comical picture of the work of a dentist. Each stanza takes on parts of the day’s work of a dentist, and how it has to be expressed as an advertisement to the people on the street. Very catchy.
