Missing Gems from the Golden 50s….song No. 3
—————————————————-
Today’s song is from a film of 1954-Pehli Jhalak.

The year 1954 was a mixed treat for the film industry. The trend of movies on Detective or crime themes began this year, starting with Aar paar and Taxi Driver. Filmistan was the most successful production house with two superhit films having popular music from composer Hemant kumar. Naagin and Jaagriti were the films. Bimal Roy made three films- Naukari,Biraj bahu and Baap Beti ( based on Guy De Maupassant’s Simon’s Papa). H S Rawail made Mastana based on Chaplin’s The Kid.

In this cluster of various films, one of India’s premier Production House at one time, “Bombay Talkies” was on its last legs. It was almost closed after 1950, when Devika Rani (after the sad demise of Himanshu Rai) married Russian Painter Roerich and settled down in Manali. After buying Bombay Talkies from her, Ashok Kumar and Saavak Vachha tried to resurrect the company by making films like Maa and Tamasha. These being big flops, the workers of Bombay Talkies unitedly made one more film Baadbaan, which too failed. Finally, the owner of Filmistan Tolaram Jalani purchased Bombay Talkies. Even today Bombay Talkies is existing in Malaad,a suburb of Mumbai, but instead of film production, Plastic factories make Plastic materials there. So sad !

In 1954, the grand old man of Hindi films, Baburao Painter died. Dilip Kumar was treated by Psychiatrists for depression caused by successive tragic roles. Dev Anand married Kalpana Kartik during the lunch break of a film shooting. Hindi films started to be made partially in colour. Naagin and Alibaba aur chaalis chor were partially colour films.

Film Pehli Jhalak-54 was directed by M.V.Raman-Mahalingam Venkatramana Raman. he was born in Tiruchirapally in Tamilnadu on 26-6-1913. He joined AVM as its paid employee, first as an Editor and then from 1949 as a Director. He directed films in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. He started with Tamil film Vazhkai-1949, in which Vyjayanti mala debuted. In 1950 a remake in Telugu was made in the name of Jeevitham and then in 1951 a Hindi remake by name of Bahar was made. In all the 3 films Vyjyanti Mala debuted and the films were directed by Raman. When AVM found that this trilingual formula succeeded, they did another triple film. Tamil film Penn was remade in Telugu as Sangham and in Hindi as Ladki in 1953. Vyjyanti Mala was the heroine in all these films.

In 1957, Raman produced film Aasha in Hindi under his own banner Raman Pictures. he then made its Tamil Version Athisaya Penn, for which the Music Director was again C.Ramchandra. C Ramchandra was one of the composers from Bombay who was quite popular with Madras Producers. Incidentally the first film for which C Ramchandra had given music in his career was a Tamil film.

In all,Raman directed 18 films, 8 in Hindi and 10 in Tamil and Telugu. His last film was Jwala-1971.

C.Ramchandra’s music in Pehli Jhalak-54 became quite popular. The famous songs were, Çharandas ko peene ki jo aadat na hoti’by Kishore Kumar and ‘Zameen chal rahi, aasman chal rahi’ by Hemant kumar. The film had a total of 11 songs sung by Asha, Lata, Kishore, Hemant kumar and Shamshad Begum. Actually Shamshad Begum got a song to sing because Lata refused to sing a club song,”Paisa aata hai”.

One highlight of this film was the scene in which Omprakash dreams of a wrestling match between him and Dara singh. Dara Singh had become an extremely popular Indian wrestler those days and millions would gather in the stadiums to watch his bouts with International wrestlers. He was awarded “Rustom E Hind”in 1954 itself. One speciality of Dara Singh was that he never ever lost a match in his career as a wrestler. I was a great fan of Dara Singh and remember having gone to see one of his bouts against International wrestler King Kong. Even when he started working in films,I used to see almost all his films. My friends used to laugh at me. When I started writing on films and songs of old times,I learnt that even Greta Memsaab was a great fan of Dara Singh and I was very happy.

The cast fo pehli Jhalak was Kishore kumar, Vyjayanti Mala,P ran, shammi,Roopa,Jawahar Kaul, Omprakash,Dara singh etc etc. The story of the film Pehli Jhalak-54 was..

Bina is a very beautiful girl. her father Lala kedarnath arranges her marriage, but the marriage is broken due to excessive demands of dowry. The groom returns without the bride. lala is very sad. Bina can not see his in distress. She leaves her house. She meets another girl Roopa, who stays with her good for nothing brother Rajan, who is vagabond,a gambler and a pickpocket too. Bina starts living with them and tries to reform Rajan.

Pran is a crook who runs a gambling den and has many unlawful businesses. he blackmails Chand, son of Raisaheb Jwala prasad, with help of a diary maintained by him. Bina, due to her skill in singing and dancing becomes very famous and does stage shows. Once Pran visits her house to invite her for a programme in his club. He forgets his diary in her house. Bina reads the diary and learns everything about Pran’s illegal work. She decides to punish him. Pran learns that the diary is with Bina and he tries to murder her, when Rajan comes and saves her. Love blooms and they together decide to approach police. The police raid the gambling den and club, where they catch Pran rd handed in crime. He is arrested. Bina and Rajan unite.

Today’s song is by Lata. The song is based on Marathi Lavani style. Enacted by Vyjayanti Mala on screen, the dance is also like a Lavani dance. ( Laavni is usually used in Tamashas and is a favourite of front benchers for its dual meaning lyrics).

Let us now enjoy this Lavni type song with Vyjayanti mala’s dance Video, from film Pehli Jhalak-1954.

Dilip was advised by Harley Street psychiatrist to do comedy movies. From 1960 there was spate of such movies like Kohinoor, Ram Aur Shyam, Leader, etc.
