After celebrating R. D. Burman’s 500th song on the blog with the grand medley of English songs from Bombay to Goa (1972), we are coming to the last song from this movie to be covered on this blog.
The name of the movie suggests that this is a road movie. As usual a road movie needs to have a main character, who undergoes a transformation and realizes his/her past mistakes and comes back to the straight and narrow. The main character of this plot is Mala (Aruna Irani). She is on the run after having witnessed a murder. She boards a bus, which goes from Bombay to Goa.
The bus conductor is Mehmood. No, he doesn’t play her love interest, though he IS the character who gets most footage in the film. Also on board is her fiancé, whom she doesn’t know as yet, which is not at all unusual in India and in Hindi films. Once she boards the bus she remembers, for the benefit of the viewers, the chain of events, which lead to her boarding the bus.
This is the opening song of her flashback.
The song sees her frolicking in the swimming pool, although evidently she can’t swim to save her life. But that doesn’t stop her from jumping around and creeping on the edge of the swimming pool and making a pretty nuisance of herself. The only thing that can be said in her defense is that she has enough sense to use a floating tyre at least for a short period of the song.
We also see shady characters in form of Shatrughan Sinha and Manmohan, who are smoking (very bad sign in Hindi films) and approaching nubile, young girls, clearly not at all with good intentions. We viewers surely know that there is some ‘black in the lentils’ and this something black is not only on Aruna Irani’s swimming suit.
This can also be classified as a swimming pool song. The mother of such swimming pool songs in Hindi movies is (I think) this song from “Mr and Mrs”(1955) which also has the word with thandaa in it, viz. thandi hawaa kaali ghataa aayi gayi jhoom ke . If you, dear readers, know about a similar song (heroine frolicking in and around the swimming pool with her friends) from an earlier period than 1955, then please do tell me. Meanwhile do enjoy this sensual song by Asha Bhonsle.

Pamirji,
thandi hawa was picturised at MG Swimming Pool Dadar(W) on the seashore. There was a small restaurant adjacent to the pool which served scrumptious samosas and playing old records like raat ne kya kya khwab dikhaye, jaaye to to jaaye kaha. The swirling sea by the side under the dark blue sky produced an errie effect which will always be with me.

Nitinbhai, I was a regular at Mahatma Gandhi Pool Shivaji Park in 1954. It was built Olympic style. Rectangular. You are right about the film songs playing on the speakers but this kidney shape pool with spa is not MG Pool but perhaps some hotel or private property with its lawns etc. Also, RD was familiar with rock and roll and other western popular music in the late 50’s and early 60’s. I know this from personal contact like rkummanj comment.

Nitin ji,
Harvey ji asked for songs BEFORE 1955.
Only 2 songs from above list are before 55 and they too are not swimming pool songs.

Harvey ji,
The earliest such a song I can remember is from film “Bramhachari”-1938 with a teasing song by Meenakshi Shirodkar-‘Jamuna bich khelu khel Kanhaiya, aao na’. In this song the heroine is teasing the Bramhachari friend ( Master Vinayak),on a swimming pool.

It is not a swimming pool, but a small or medium sized water pond/Talaab, no sahelis, no sakhis with a young SHASHIKALA

A good song but not RD quality.. may be some underling of his created this one while RD was busy elsewhere? Or may be he was trying to set an example to show others how not to create a song but quite couldn’t and ended up with a marginally good song as an example?

Kummanjji,
You may not be right. Generally its the other way round the industry works. Generally the assistant MD(they were all versatile) does all the hard work but the MD takes the credit. For all we know it could be RD’s own composition as it sounds typically his.

TBH, The era we are discussing, was the the border when twist was sort of declining and rock and roll was in the rise. Our guys, even though had not started to get “inspired” wholesale from west, were clearly experimenting.. RD wasn’t untouched by that either (I hate to say this actually cos that family is quite close to me). The song O mehki mehki (bombay goa bom bombay goa) is ‘inspired’ by “help me rhonda” by beach boys for example.. So these cannot sound typically like RD or Bappi.. eh may smell like them but not sound like them

I didn’t give much thought to that, but I think both the scenarios are possible.
