“Paheli” (1977) is a Rajshri Pictures production meaning it had Tarachand Barjatya (10 May 1914 – 21 September 1992) as producer. The film was directed by Prashant Nanda; essentially a director of Odia films, who directed 3 Hindi films- ‘Paheli’ (1977), ‘Naiyya’ (1979) and ‘Grahasthi’ (audio of the film was released with the name ‘Kaise Karoon Singaar’ in 1983 & the film was called ‘Grahasthi’ in 1984, during release).
‘Paheli’ had Satyajeet, Namita Chandra (debutant), Poornima Jayram (debutant), Durga Khote, A.K. Hangal, Dina Pathak, Leela Mishra, Nitin Sethi, Abha Dhulia, and Arun Govil (also a debutant) and others in the cast. Neena Mahapatra & Anita Singh (also debutants) were also in the film.

The film was the story of Montu (Satyajeet) who is studying in the final-school year in a city, who reluctantly visits his grandmother (Durga Khote). He becomes friends with a vivacious village girl Gauri (Nameeta Chandra), an orphan living with her cruel aunt, and two equally brutal cousins. He also meets a struggling farmer Balram (Arun Govil), his mother (Leela Mishra), and his fiancée Kanak (Abha Dhulia). Against his expectations, Montu finds village life interesting and promises his grandmother to return the next year. After a year, he finds significant changes in the village. Balram has married and left the village. His ailing mother has died. Gauri refuses to speak with him, while her uncle and aunt are looking for a suitable groom to get her married to. Does Montu understand and appreciate changes in the village against the city life, where he has grown up, and visit his grandmother again?
This was the premise of the film.
“Paheli-1977” has six songs which were written by Ravindra Jain who also composed the music for this movie. Singer Suresh Wadkar made his singing debut with this movie. The other singers for this movie were Hemlata and Chandrani Mukherji. Suresh Wadkar had sung one solo song. He also has two duet son:gs with Hemlata, and one song with Hemlata and Chandrani Mukherji. Hemlata’s voice appears in five songs of this movie and the voice of Chandrani Mukherji is used in two songs of this movie. The following four songs are on the blog:-

Recently, I was lent a book by my niece, which is about ‘The Untold Stories Of Bollywood’s Child Actors’. The title of the book is “Behind the Big Screen” written by Sunanda Mehta & Suchitra Iyer. Almost around the same time, I discovered a video where child actor of yesteryear Master Tito (Talat Khatri being his birth name) spoke about his time as a child actor and also the few movies after he became an adult. He also spoke of how he is still connected with films, though not in front of the camera.
The book speaks about prominent child actors from the time when Shashi Kapoor, Tabassum, Baby Naaz, Daisy Irani, Honey Irani etc ruled the marquee to the times of Jr. Mehmood, Sachin, Master Raju, Master Alankar, Master Satyajeet etc. I have not gone through the whole book, but I find a list of all the child actors of Hindi Cinema from the 1940s to 2020, in the closing pages of the book.
As per the book, Master Satyajeet faced the camera for the first time in ‘Mere Lal’; playing the son of Mala Sinha- already a popular actress then. That, tiny, three scene role fetched him an award which was handed to him by the RAJ KAPOOR who anointed him ‘the star of tomorrow’ (I am quoting this from the book). The book also mentions that he is the son of yesteryear actor/director Daljeet Puri (I am sure Atuldom knows this) and his mother Ashita Bose is a singer (this is new info for me atleast). His sister Deepali is married to actor Puneet Issar.
The first time I saw this child actor was, possibly, in ‘Anuraag’ as Nutan’s son who is terminally ill. Then I also saw ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ where he played a young Dev Anand & ‘Shor’ where he played Manoj Kumar’s son who becomes mute when he witnesses his mother die in an accident (maybe in theatres and/or on doordarshan). I also remember him in ‘Bidaai’ where we see him visiting his father’s hometown, looking for his grandmother Durga Khote. He must have been 15/16 (or even younger) when he shot for Manmohan Desai’s ‘Chacha Bhatija’ (as young Dharmendra) which released in 1977. The other films with Master Satyajeet that released in 1977 were ‘Tyaag’ (a long in the making film), ‘Jagriti’ & ‘Paheli’. So, we saw the actor in different stages of his life in films that released in 1977.
He played a teenager in ‘Paheli’ (as was his calendar age at that time).
The first time Satyajeet appeared in a prominent role after gaining adulthood was ‘Arjun’ (1985) where he played Sunny Deol’s friend. After that, he was seen in many films playing important characters that help in embellishing those films. The book says that he has taken to writing & directing, a passion that he got from the likes of Manoj Kumar.
A few months back, I met met this actor at the wedding reception of a friend’s son. He was so nice to talk to. He was humble and grounded too. An attribute that he says he imbibed from his parents specially his mother (as per the book I mentioned above quotes)
Here is wishing the ‘once upon a time MASTER’ Satyajeet a very Happy Birthday. May he be always the way he is- Polite & Humble & Grounded.
