‘Soldier – Thakur Diler Singh’ (1969) was produced by Pachhi and was directed by Shyam. The cast included Deepa and Kumar Ajit (Ajit Singh Deol) who made their debut in the lead roles. The supporting cast included Shyam Kumar, Rajan Haksar, Amarnath, Jagdev, Parshuram, Satish, Sujata, Jayshree T, Bilkis, Shabana, Satya Devi, Habib, Amir Ali, Aziz Kashmiri, Randhir etc. Dharmendra, Om Prakash and Mehmood made special appearances in the film, probably to give the ‘star power’ to the film. In this film, two real brothers worked – Dharmendra with Ajit Deol and Om Prakash with Producer, Pachhi (real name: Ram Prakash Chibber) who also acted in the film.
Ajit Singh Deol (C.1940 – 23/10/2015) shifted from his working place, Gurdaspur to Mumbai at the instance of his elder brother, Dharmendra sometime in early 1960s and stayed with him in a joint family until his death. He debuted in a shelved film, ‘Chilman’ in 1965 adopting a screen name, Abhay. Later, he gave this name to his son, Abhay Deol. His second film, in which he was a lead actor paired with Kanan Kaushal was ‘Meete Bol’, which also got shelved. ‘Soldier- Thakur Diler Singh’ (1969) was his first released film in which he was a lead actor with a screen name of Kumar Ajit and was paired with another debutant actress, Deepa. Thereafter he worked in supporting roles in ‘Ek Nazar’ (1972), ‘Do Chor’ (1972), ‘Parchhaaiyaan’ (1972), ‘Khote Sikkay’ (1973), ‘Resham Ki Dori’ (1973), Raeeszaada’ (1976), ‘Kachche Heere’ (1980), ‘Faasle’ (1985), Barsaat’ (1995) etc. In addition, he acted in a few Punjabi films also. He worked around 25 films during 1969-95.
As it often happens in the film industry, Ajit Singh Deol got overshadowed by his elder brother, Dharmendra who, by 1970, had gained a super star status. Another point which appears to have gone against Ajit Singh Deol was that in some angles, he resembled Dharmendra. He had almost the same voice as that of Dharmendra especially when he delivered his dialogues in emotional and angry scenes.
Ajit Singh Deol produced films mainly in partnership with his brother-in-law, Bikram Singh Dehal (his elder sister’s husband). Their first film as producers was ‘Pratiggya’ (1975) for which he also wrote the story. This was followed by ‘Dillagi’ (1978) and ‘Meharbaani’ (1981). In all these three films, his elder brother Dharmendra was paired with Hema Malini. ‘Veertaa’ (1993) was his last film as a producer in which his nephew, Sunny Deol was paired with Jaya Prada. For the first time, he wrote the songs for this film.
Ajit Singh Deol led a relatively private and low-profile personal life compared to his elder brother, Dharmendra. Ajit was married to Usha Deol. Surprisingly, their son, Abhay Deol, has not so far worked with Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. The reason being that he has mostly preferred middle-of-the-road type films. However, he debuted in ‘Socha Na Thha’ (2005) as an actor in Dharmendra’s film production banner, Vijayta Films.
In Hema Malini’s autobiography, Ajit Singh Deol is mentioned as a pivotal figure who bridged 30-year divide in Dharmendra’s two families. Hema Malini’s two daughters were very close to Ajit Singh Deol. When he became seriously ill and bedridden in 2015, he was being cared for at Dharmendra’s family home. Because he was too unwell to travel and was not admitted to a public hospital, Esha felt a strong urge to visit and meet him. Esha contacted her stepbrother, Sunny Deol, who organised her visit. This made Esha the very first person from Hema Malini’s immediate family to ever enter Dharmendra’s household. During this visit, Dharmendra’s first wife was also present by the side of Ajit Singh Deol. Esha touched her feet and received her blessings
Ajit Singh Deol passed away on October 23, 2015.
The story of the film is as under:
Deepak (Ajit Singh Deol) a soldier in Indian army returns home on leave to find that his uncle, Thakur Ranveer Singh has acquired the haveli of his deceased father in a fraudulent way. Deepak’s mother (Satya Devi) and sister have shifted to an ordinary house. On meeting his uncle, he gets to know that his father has put his thumb impression on the deed of transfer in uncle’s favour in settlement of his debt to him. Deepak smells that it is a fabricated claims of his father’ debt to grab the property because why his father will give a thumb impression when he can sign. He raises this issue in gram panchayat where he does not get justice as the Panchayat is controlled by Thakur Ranveer Singh. He threatens his uncle that he would kill him. But other members specify him that he has recourse to the court.
In the meanwhile, Thakur Ranveer Singh is mysteriously found dead with bullet wound. Deepak gets framed for the murder on the basis of his threat to his uncle as well as some circumstantial evidence and managed eye witnesses. The court sentence him the life imprisonment. After the death of Thakur Ranveer Singh, the property has to be legally inherited by his son, Chhote Thakur (Jagdev). However, the consent of Deepak’s mother and sister is necessary before the property is transferred in the name of Chhote Thakur.
Actually, it is the handiwork of Chhote Thakur (Jagdev) who is in huge debt and wants to inherit the property to settle his dues. He entrusts the work of eliminating Thakur Ranveer Singh to dacoit, Nishan Singh (Rajan Haksar), contractor Mangal Singh (Shyam Kumar) and Shankar (??). But having failed to get the signatures of Deepak’s mother and sister, Chhote Thakur once again gets them killed by Nishan Singh’s gang. Deepak gets parole to perform his mother and sister’s last rites. He takes a vow to finish whoever have done the cowardly act of killings. Deepak escapes after performing the last rites. In a police chase, Deepak gets bullet would on his arm and rolls down the hill where he is taken care by a girl. She removes the bullet from his arms. She introduces herself as Sheel (Deepa). He reveals to her the entire events since he returned from the army. Sheel gives him a temporary shelter in her house.
As soon as the news of the escape of Deepak is known to Chhote Thakur and his cronies including Jarnail Singh (Pachhi) and Lohari (Parshuram), they are all worried as he would definitely return to take revenge because all of them have given the false witness against Deepak in the court. One night, when Jarnail Singh was returning home, Deepak gets hold of Jarnail Singh. He snatches his gun and kills him. He sets Lohari as his next target. However, Chhote Thakur on a visit to him makes Deepak leave Lohari to chase Chhote Thakur up to his palace where he meets Poonam (??), She introduces herself as an unfortunate girl who has given her heart to Chhote Thakur. She reveals that that it was dacoit Nishan Singh and his gang who had killed Thakur Ranveer Singh. Deepak leaves by giving her assurance that he will not harm Chhote Thakur. He leaves to look for Nishan Singh and his gang.
Inspector Tiwari (Amarnath) has come to know the gang behind the murder of Deepak’s mother and sister and he is on way to tackle them. Disguising himself as a criminal, Inspector Tiwari meets Nishan Singh and his partner, Mona (Sujata) in his den and joins his gang. Deepak on the other hand leaves Sheel without informing her to tackle his family’s killers. He also joins Nishan Singh’s gang while assaulting one of his gang members who himself recommends Deepak in the gang. Deepak introduces himself as Diler Singh. With Inspector disguising as criminal already in the gang who is also looking for an absconding Deepak, the climax of the story is going to become an interesting one.
Deepak leads his first successful decoit mission to loot a money lender which he distributes among his gang members. With this act, most of Nishan Singh’s gang members become loyal to Deepak which is not liked by Nishan Singh. He confronts with Deepak in which he gets killed. The gang members hails Deepak as their new leader. But he declines by saying that he has some more tasks to do. He advises the gang members to give up their arms and surrender to the police to start their new life of noble livelihood. Inspector Tiwari listens to Deepak’s sermons. He returns to police headquarters without arresting Deepak with satisfaction that he has eliminated Nishan Singh which police could not do so.
Police Commissioner admonishes Inspector Tiwari for having not taken Deepak into his custody when he returns to report him about the progress of his assignment. He says that even though Nishan Singh is eliminated, Deepak is still the guilty of the murder of Thakur Ranveer Singh and of absconding during his parole. Despite Inspector Tiwari’s pleading, Police Commissioner tells him to look out for Deepak and arrest him after which he can prove himself as innocent.
Deepak is on his next mission to eliminate Mangal Singh, the contractor. But Sheel meets him on his way and says that she will also joins his mission. Both of them join Mangal Singh as labourers for tree cuttings in the forest. Deepak fights with Mangal Singh when he tries to outrage the modesty of Sheel and makes him blind so that in future he will no do such act.
In the meanwhile, Chhote Thakur with his remaining two cronies have gone underground in fear of Deepak and have taken shelter under Shankar who is now Deepak’s last man to be eliminated. He joins Shankar as Rana who calls himself as an expert in looting wedding procession. Shankar assigns him to loot the wedding procession of Banke (Mehmood) whose father (Om Prakash) is a money lender and has collected jewelry and cash worth Rs.10 lakhs as dowry. During the looting of the procession, Shankar tries to molest the bride which angers Deepak. In the fight, Deepak kills Shankar. The other gang members run away. With his protector gone, Chhote Thakur escapes on a motor boat and Deepak follows him. Instead of killing him, Deepak makes Chhote Thakur immobilised to suffer rest of his life.
A police team led by Inspector Tiwari who is accompanied by Sheel come in search of Deepak when they rescue Chhote Thakur. Deepak surrenders before Inspector Tiwari by saying that he has accomplished his mission. With the acceptance of Chhote Thakur in the crime with two witnesses asserting that they were forced to give wrong statements, Deepak is exonerated by the court for the crime.
The film has five songs written by Aziz Kashmiri which were set to music by Sonik-Omi. One song has been covered in the past.
Here is the second song from the movie ‘tum ek nazar dekho to idhar’, rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for debutant Deepa. The context of the song is that Sheel (Deepa) has given shelter to Deepak (Ajit Singh Deol) after escaping from police custody. She tells him that she has fallen in love with him. But he says that after wrongly confined to prison followed by the death of his mother and sister, he cannot fall in love as there is only hatred in his heart. She says that her love will sooth the hatred in his heart and the song follows. .
This is a melodious song which remains in the mind among the five songs in the film.
