The stock photograph that is available shows a very suave and handsome Sikh gentleman.  The beard is neatly packed, the moustache is starched razor sharp, and the turban is a perfect construct.  Six feet plus, with a very fair skin – all attributes put together make up a very attractive and becoming personality.  By his own admission, he labels himself to be a romantic – and that he had to be in love to be able to create music.  The others called him a “ladies man”.

Remembering Sardul Kwatra on the anniversary of his passing away today (6th July).

As I am checking out the details about him today, I find that his last place of stay was in Fremont in California, USA.  He passed away in 2004.  And I am thinking, this was another missed opportunity. 2001 onwards, I was in San Jose, California.  That placed me about 10 miles away from where this gentleman would have resided.  (The other missed opportunity was SD Batish, who lived in Santa Cruz, which was about forty miles from San Jose).  Only if I had known in good time.

About 20 films in a little over two decades, plus a similar number of Punjabi films – is the portfolio of the music that he has created for the Indian cinema.  As one explores the Geet Kosh for his films, one finds that much like Vinod, Sardul Kwatra was also mostly confined to B/C grade films, with titles like ‘Pipili Saheb’ (1954), ‘Kaala Chashma’ (1962), ‘Tees Maar Khan’ (1955), ‘Gypsy Girl’ (1961), ‘Dekha Jaayega’ (1960), and ‘Air Mail’ (1960) to his credit.  With ‘Goonj’ (1952) and ‘Mirza Saahiban’ (1957), it seemed as if he has broken into the grade A cinema.  But in reality, it was not to be.  (A detailed write up on his life and career can be found with the song “Aa Gaye Aa Gaye Aa Gey Jinko Dekh Ke Sharmaaun” from film ‘Goonj’.)

This song is from the 1959 film ‘Lady Robinhood’.  This obscure and forgotten film carries a repertoire of really attractive songs.  Three (out of six) songs are already showcased here.  Today I present this fourth song from this film.  It is a very interesting presentation.  The poetry form is a ghazal, but the music director has designed the singing as a short qawwaali, with short and very meaningful verses.  The singing voice is that of Nirmala Devi accompanied by chorus voices. The singing is enamoring. Nirmala ji’s voice sounds very keenly young and eager.

The words of this wonderful song are from the pen of Shakee Nomani.  This name is not new to the readers of this blog – there are 10 songs already posted here that have been written by him.  More interesting is the statistics about Sardul Kwatra himself. As per Geet Kosh, the number of songs that have been composed by him come to around 130; i.e. Hindi films only.  Our blog so far has representations only from 26 of his songs.  Which means we still have over a hundred songs to post for this ‘ladies man’ music director.

Till we get to that milestone, let us enjoy this song.

Song – Main Bechain Rehta Hoon Wo Jaante Hain (Lady Robinhood) (1959) Singer – Nirmala Devi, Lyrics – Shakeel Nomani, MD – Sardul Kwatra
Chorus

Lyrics

aaaa aaaaa aaaaaa
aaaaa aaaa aaaaaa
aaaaaaa aaaaaa aaaaaa

main bechain rehta
hoon wo jaante hain
unhen meri haalat ki
sab kuchh khabar hai
main bechain rehta
hoon wo jaante hain
unhen meri haalat ki
sab kuchh khabar hai
unhi ki tawajjo
ki ye saazishen hain
unhin ki nigaahon ka
dil par asar hai
unhi ki tawajjo
ki ye saazishen hain
unhin ki nigaahon ka
dil par asar
hai. .ai. .aa
main bechain rehta. . .

mohabbat dilon pe
asar kar chuki hai
jo kehti ha duniya
wo ho kar rahega
haan haan ji ho kar rahega
haan haan ji ho kar rahega. . .
main kya chaahta hoon
wo kya chaahta hain
na mujhko khabar hai
na unko khabar hai
main kya chaahta hoon
wo kya chaahta hain
na mujhko khabar hai
na unko khabar
hai. .ai. .aa
main bechain rehta. . .

dil e gham bataa(?) ke
main qurbaan jaaun
mazaaq e mohabbat
kahaan aa gaya
haan haan kahaan aa gaya
haan ji kahaan aa gaya hai
wo raaton ko rote
hain sotey nahin hain
jo aalam idhar thaa
wo aalam udhar hai
wo raaton ko rote
hain sotey nahin hain
jo aalam idhar thaa
wo aalam udhar
hai. .ai. .aa

main bechain rehta
hoon wo jaante hain
unhen meri haalat ki (aaaaaa aaaa)
sab kuchh khabar hai (aaaa aaaaaaa)
main bechain rehta (aaaa aaaaaaaa)
hoon wo jaante hain (aaaaaaaaaaaaa)
unhen meri haalat ki (aaaaaa aaaa)
sab kuchh khabar hai (aaaa aaaaaaa)
main bechain rehta (aaaa aaaaa aaaaa)
hoon wo jaante hain (aaaaa aaaaaa aaaa)
unhen meri haalat ki (aaaaaa aaaa)
sab kuchh khabar hai

आsss आssss आsssss
आssss आsss आsssss
आsssssss आsssss आsssss

Wah wah Sudhirbhai,
What a quawwaali ! During the recordings of one of the songs of ‘Pilpilisaheb’ I talked with Shardul-ji for quite a long time as all were waiting for Lata-ji to arrive. He was so modest that when I wanted to know about his work, he will start praising the works of Anil Biswas, Sajjad, C Ramchandra etc.
I like Nirmala Devi’s style and voice very much and have lots of thumries, Dadras and gazals. And thanks to this blog that I have now many of her old film songs too. Her range is terrific. She can sing intricate taans even in taar saptak with so much ease that one has no words to describe it. Thanks again for this wonderful treat. (Mera din sudhaar diya)

Wallah! Kya baat hai!
Mazaa aa gaya. Bhai wah!
Thank you very much Sudhir ji for this excellent qawwali.
As respected Bharat Bhai has pointed out, Nirmala ji’s voice has imparted it an unique touch. I thought her singing was confined to only serious and classical songs and bhajans. Never would have guessed that she could as effortlessly transform light numbers too.
Incidentally, I had enjoyed watching “Pilpili Saheb” as a young kid. Must have been among the first lot of films that I had seen in my childhood. Naturally, at that time I had little idea of film music and the people associated with the creative aspects. Only much later in life I became aware of music director Sardul Kwatra.
Your post thus brought back nostalgic memories.
Thanks & regards,
Avadh Lal
