The decade of the 1950s is called “The Golden 50s”. Within the decade 1957 was the brightest Diamond. The year brought a deluge of meaningful, entertaining and musical films. The Indian audience truly bathed in Ecstasy and exhilaration to enjoy such a variety of joyous feast of optical and aural treat !

While serious but meaningful films like Mother India, Do aankhen barah haath and Pyaasa made the connoisseurs think and self retrospect, sheer entertainers like Naya Daur, Miss Mary,Tumsa nahin dekha, Paying Guest, Nau do gyarah and Asha gave Indian audience enjoyment and pleasures.

Musical films like Dekh Kabira Roya, Gateway of India, Nausherwane Adil, Janam janam ke phere, K and Shaarda provided everlasting songs. Bandi by Satyen Bose brought all three Ganguly brothers together for the first time ( he repeated the feat yet again in Chalti ka naam gaadi the very following year-1958).

In the midst of all these Hit films, Bimal Roy’s “Apradhi Kaun ” gave a tough fight. It was neither a musical, nor a meaningful film nor a comedy film. It was a Murder mystery film. The film was produced by Bimal Roy and directed by Asit Sen, his faithful assistant of 10 years. Asit Sen is a case of “”Same name confusion”. This Asit Sen became a popular comedy actor later in his career. There was another Asit Sen, who was only a Director throughout.

The roly poly, slow speaking, heavily built comedian would have actually been an A-class Director, but for his laziness. Born in Gorakhpur-UP in 1917, his Photographer father put him in the New Theatres Camera Department. Doing small bit roles, he slowly became an assistant to Bimal Roy and shifted to Bombay in 1950. He was the production executive for Do Bigha Zameen(1953) as well as the assistant director for Parineeta(1953) and Biraj Bahu(1954). He directed two films- Pariwar(1956) and Apradhi Kaun(1957). Though his work was appreciated, he preferred to work as actor than a director, perhaps due to his heavy body. Unfortunately, these two well directed films of roly poly Asit Sen are mistakenly often credited to the other Asit Sen.

After doing small roles in Bimal Roy’s films like Sujata, Parakh, Anuradha, Memdidi and Kabuliwala, he did his first comic roles in Junglee(1961) and Sautela Bhai(1962). It was here that he perfected his slow delivery style.

He worked in almost 450 films in all languages. He also tried doing serious roles, like in Chetana, Zaroorat, Aradhana, but he was rejected. The audience wanted him as a comedian only.

He succumbed to a heart attack on 18-7-1993.

I have seen hundreds of films in many languages,in my life, but I place “Apradhi kaun”-57 nearer the Top in my list of Murder mystery films. It was a superb film, it was directed slickly and it kept the audience guessing till the end about who the Murderer was. In Hindi, I have seen very few good murder mysteries and I rate this film as one of the best films in this genre. The Hero- Abhi Bhattacharya and the Heroine- Mala Sinha, were not the Top rated actors of that time but they did their roles too well. Kumud Tripathi as a comedian (earlier he was a Lyricist and a Poet), along with Dhumal-masquerading as a Mute servant- and Kammo as a Maid provided the tension releasing Comedy side plot.

Abhi Bbhattacharya ( 1921-11/9/1993) had a handsome and impressive personality. Belonging to the Bimal Roy camp, he debuted in 1947 with the film Nauka dubi from Bombay Talkies- a Bengali dominated production house. Some of his other notable films were Yatrik-52, Jagriti-54, Biraj Bahu-54, Anuradha-60, Aradhana-69, Seeta aur Geeta-72 etc etc. He worked with stalwarts lie Bimal Roy, Satyen Bose, Nitin Bose, Guru Dutt, Ritwik Ghatak etc. In the later part of his career he worked as Lord Vishnu and lord Shrikrishna in many Mythological films. he wrote one book too,”Destiny with Dadaji”. He acted in 166 films. His last film was ‘Professor ki Padosan’-93. He died on 11-9-1993.

Two actors- Tarun Bose and Lilian debuted in this film. Tarun Bose acted in many films as a character actor. His role which I remember most is as the father of Sharmila Tagore in the film ‘Anupama’-66. Lilian, however, could not go beyond 6 films. Probably her poor Hindi did her in.

Salil Chaudhari was the Music Director for this film. His assistants for this film were Sebastian and Kanu Ghosh. Lyrics were by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The film had only five songs. Today’s song is the fourth song to be discussed here-leaving just one song for Yippee moment. The cast of the film was Abhi Bhattacharya, Mala Sinha, Kumud Tripathi, Gajanan Jahagirdar, Dhumal, Kammo, Paul Mahendra, Murad, Bikram Kapoor, Tarun Bose, Lilian, etc. Actor Moni Bhattacharya was the production controller in this film.

The story of the film was ( including ‘who did it’) –

The film opens with Dinanath coming back to his house. His brother first refuses but then agrees to allow him to stay there.

Jitpur’s landlord Jogeshwar babu had at one time disinherited his son Dinanath ( Gajanan Jahagirdar) owing to his strong views against the system of Zamindari and the younger son Srinath ( Gajanan Jahagirdar) was made the sole heir to his vast property. Before his death, however Jogeshwarbabu had realised that Srinath was an unscrupulous man of questionable character. He therefore made a second will disinheriting his younger son Srinath entirely and making Dinanath his heir. The first will was in possession of Srinath while the second and the really valid will was in the custody of a trusted friend Raibahadur Jankinath ( Murad).

Srinath who had thus illegally expropriated the vast property was a chronic patient and therefore a doctor ( Tarun Bose) and a nurse Shobha ( Mala Sinha) were permanently quartered in his house. The wholly unexpected return of the now paralytic and poverty-stricken Dinanath unnerved Srinath who, in his futile attempt to get possession of the valid will with the help of a charming cabaret dancer Lily ( Lilian), unwittingly killed the Raibahadur.

Srinath, now a fugitive from law, suffered from an paranoia that his life was in constant danger. He therefore summoned from the city the famous private detective Rajesh ( Abhi Bhattacharya) for protection. Hardly had Rajesh taken quarters with Srinath when the police party raided the house at mid-night to arrest Srinath for the murder of Raibahadur. When the doors of Srinath’s room were pushed open, lo and behold, Srinath the murderer himself was found murdered with a dagger plunged in his back.

Job of Rajesh has become complicated now. He finds that Shobha, the Nurse is Dinanath’s niece ( Pitambar’s daughter). They both are in love now. Srinath has all enemies in the house. The doctor is angry because Srinath stole his secret formula for curing Ashtma. Munim ji is angry because Srinath has exposed his misappropriation and threatened to call police. While investigations are going on there is an attempt to murder Shobha too.

Finally, there is a chase and fight of Rajesh and the veiled murderer. Overpowering him Rajesh sees his identity and is shocked, though he had guessed it.

It is none but Shrinath himself in the disguise of his twin look alike brother Dinanath whom he murders and fakes his own murder.

Now Shobha alone is the heir to the hugh estate. Rajesh and Shobha as well as his assistant Kumud Tripathi and the maid-Kammo unite.

Here is this song from “Apradhi Kaun”(1957). It is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Salil Chaudhary. The song is picturised as a cabarat dance song on Lilian.

Nice write-up. Asit Sen, the comedian came into limelight also with his role of a detective, “Gopichand Jasoos” in the film “Bees saal baad”, also released in 1962.

Excellent Deshmukh Sir, as usual.
In my opinion too, it was one of the best Hindi mystery films.
I remember when the film was released in 1957, it was widely publicised that anyone who could guess the identity of the murderer before the interval of the first show would be rewarded. I doubt whether there were any awardees.
The trend of having a taut suspense and the secret of murderer being unravelled only at the end of the film was also followed in ‘Bees Saal Baad’ as well and some other films after that.
But I think that the double-role formula of the actual culprit had begun earlier with ‘Afsana’, which was later remade as ‘Dastaan’ and also in
‘Kanoon’.
