Missing Films of 1960s – 8
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

I am really incensed. Generally that does not happen easily, but today it has. Going thru the list of un-represented films from 1960s, the next target film for me was ‘Hawa Mahal’. I already looked for the 78 rpm records of this film, and have drawn a blank. From more than one source, I was informed that no records were manufactured for this film. Disappointing as this information was in itself, I was concerned, but not too much. Because I knew that I have this film with me on disk. So when the time came to prepare a post for the film ‘Hawa Mahal’, I took out video file of the film, with the intent of listening to the songs and to prepare a upload version of one of them.

Much to my horror and chargin, as I scanned through the film, I find that it contains no songs. No meaning NO SONGS. The Geet Kosh lists six for this film with music by Avinash Vyas. ALL the six songs have been edited out of the disk version. The only consolation, and a tiny one at that, is that one antaraa and the mukhda of the song “Taaron Bhari Raat Hai…” is played at the very end of the film, as the closing clip. And thats it. All songs from the main film are dissected out. The remaining film ends in one hour and forty minutes, clearly showing that the original would have been a little over two hours, with six songs that would total to about twenty minutes or more. Now, unless the original VHS version of this film is somehow retrieved and checked, the songs of this film may have been lost forever.  This would be a very sad situation, since the entire film and its soundtrack is available. But no songs.

With a resigned mind, I now come to the next film of this series – ‘Jaadu Mahal’ from 1962.  Same as the film ‘Hawaa Maha’, this film also belongs to the category which I like to call as ‘jaadugar sainyyaan’ films. It is a fantasy film from the banner of Akku Films, Bombay. It is directed by Akku. The lead pair in this film are Azaad and Helen. (Incidentally, Helen is also the heroine of the film ‘Hawa Mahal’).  Other members of the cast include Hiralal, Krishna Kumari, Ram Kumar, Sheikh, Hira Sawant, Tun Tun, Akram, Parshuram, Habib, Jilaani, Zippy, Laali, Ajit, Rekha, Dilip, Bholanath, Trilok Nath, Baadshah, Daatu etc.

There are six songs in this film, all written by Shevan Rizvi.  Music direction is by Bulo C Rani. This song is an endearing duet in the voices of Subir Sen and Purnima Seth.  Subir Sen is a voice and a name that we are all very familiar with.  However, the name of Purnima Seth appears on this blog for the first time. I tried to search through the Geet Kosh, but as far as I can make out, this seems to be the only one song listed in her voice. This name does not appear anywhere else in the Geet Kosh.

The song is an exchange between the lovers, expressing their desire and willingness to live the life for one another, but please – ‘Kasam Na Lijiye, Kasam Na Dijiye’. Interesting perspective. Listen and decide for yourself whether you agree with this. But in any case, enjoy this loveable song.

Song – Kasam Na Lijiye Kasam Na Dijiye (Jaadu Mahal) (1962) Singer – Purnima Seth, Subir Sen, Lyrics – Shewan Rizvi, MD – Bulo C Rani

Lyrics

kasam na lijiye
kasam na dijiye
jiyenege hum
marenge hum
tumhaari chaah mein
kasam na lijiye
kasam na dijiye
jiyenege hum
marnge hum
tumhaari chaah mein
kasam na lijiye
kasam na dijiye
jiyenege hum
marnge hum
tumhaari chaah mein

ye raaste
ye manzilen
badi ajeeb hain
badi ajeeb hain
wo khush naseeb hai jise ek saathi mil gaya.. aa.. aa..
ye raaste
ye manzilen
badi ajeeb hain
badi ajeeb hain
wo khush naseeb hai jise ek saathi mil gaya
yakeen kijiye
kasam na lijiye
jiyenege hum
marnge hum
tumhaari chaah mein
kasam na lijiye
kasam na dijiye
jiyenege hum
marnge hum
tumhaari chaah mein

milen hain dil
khile hain dil
bhari bahaar mein
bhari bahaar mein
samaa haseen tha haseen aur ho gaya.. aa.. aa..
milen hain dil
khile hain dil
bhari bahaar mein
bhari bahaar mein
samaa haseen tha haseen aur ho gaya
yakeen kijiye
kasam na lijiye
jiyenege hum
marnge hum
tumhaari chaah mein
kasam na lijiye
kasam na dijiye
jiyenege hum
marnge hum
tumhaari chaah mein

Sudhir ji,

Poornima Seth was a regular singer and she has sung one song in film “Sangeet samrat Tansen”-62, along with Pandharinath Kolhapure (Father of Padmini Kolhapure and a relative of LM).
Although her name has been printed in HFGK as Poorna Seth, I am sure it is a misprint. To confirm one will have to see the Record itself, which you can do,I am sure.
There was a discussion on RMIM in 2007 and shri Chetan Vinchi has confirmed that she is Poornima Seth.
With your contacts in the collectors’ world, you should get at the bottom of this, I am sure.

Nice song. Simple lyrics and appealing tune. Thanks for unearthing.

Even for her songs in Badshah-1964 and Paatal Nagri-1963 her name is misspelt. Its like a cycle-stand. One cycle falls the rest also rest on the ground!

Sudhir ji to note these films also.

Dear Sirs,

It should not be considered as ‘ chhoti munh badi baat’ , but what I would like to ask all the learned members of this site is ….”Can we not contact Radio Ceylon” and ask for all old hindi film songs of 1940s, 1950s and 1960s which are not available in India ? HMV people are useless as I have already spent much of my time with them and THEY ARE OF NO USE . Can somebody help us in this matter ?
