Sureeli Suman – 15
———————–
The original HMV of EMI group was renamed RPG, when purchased by the Goenka Group. Later on in 2000, this major music producing company was aptly named as ‘Sa Re Ga Ma’. During earlier years, it used to sponsor great artists to produce many non-film music albums. Later on, under the false pretext of changing music trends, but mainly due to commercial angles, such publications along with classical music albums ware slowly reduced to very near zero.
‘Swar Bahar’ – a melodious treat for music lovers was released in 1970. Music Director Shyam Sharma composed ten superb songs for Suman Kalyanpur. The album had two Meera Bhajans and eight ‘bhaav geets’ penned by Anjaan and Yogesh, six and two respectively.
Suman Kalyanpur (aka Suman Hemmady), born on 28th January 1937, is one of the best-known and respected playback singers of Indian cinema. Her voice was often mis-identified as that of Lata Mangeshkar. Her career started in 1954 and she was a very popular singer in the 1960s and 1970s. She has been somewhat unfortunate as she never won the National Film Award or Filmfare Award for singing. Yet, she is still considered among the popular singers of her era.
She has sung a total of 857 Hindi songs. (Correct me if wrong, as this data is copied from Internet.) Besides, she has recorded songs for movies in several other Indian languages viz., Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi etc. She has sung many non-film songs, and I have been presenting them, one by one, at my pace.
This ‘birhan’ song is the eighth, out of ten, from ‘Swar Bahar’. Suman ji has brought into expression, all the feelings that the lyrics describe. By Hari Ichha, the two remaining gems will follow soon.
Song – Raat Suhaag Ki Jaag Ke Dhal Gayi (Suman Kalyanpur NFS) (1970) Singer – Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics – Anjaan, MD– Shyam Sharma
Lyrics
raat suhaag ki
jaag ke dhhal gayee
aaye na chitchor
sej ki kaliyan
taane maare
gori re ab to ho gayi bhor
gori re ab to ho gayi bhor
mann ko chhede
pyaas nigodi
mann ko chhede
pyaas nigodi
kasak sahi na jaaye
dheeraj man ka
bikhar na jaaye
tod ke laaj ki resham dor
gori re ab to ho gayee bhor
har aahat pe
dhhalke aanchal
har aahat pe
dhhalke aanchal
ye bindiya akulaaye
par bujh jaaye
dhadkan dil ki
dekh ke soone dwaar ki or
gori re ab to ho gayee bhor
thak ke soye
sapne kunwaare
thak ke soye
sapne kunwaare
soyee adhuri aas
so naa sakey
do birhi naina
soney na de ye mann ka shor
gori re ab to ho gayee bhor
raat suhaag ki
jaag ke dhhal gayi
aaye na chitchor

Thanks a lot for uploading this beautiful song sung by Suman ji. I was searching it since long time. In seventies it was often heard on aakashvani.
Thanks once again.

Avadhbhai,
After the last two songs from Album ‘Swar Bahar’, there are many many more Suman-ji’s NFS coming up in the series, Hari Ichchha permitting. Thanks for encouragement.
