Sometimes, things can’t get more rare than this. As we look for rare combination of artists, and especially singers, we come across combinations where two artists have worked together in a song, once or maybe twice in the entire history of Indian cinema. This song today, is one such song. It is a duet, rather I should correct myself, it is a trio of singers. There are two female voices, and one male voice. The male voice is not identified, even in the Geet Kosh listings. The female voices are Shamshad Begum and Hamida Bano. And the year is 1948.

The time was when the older generation of singers still ruled the roost. 1949 had still to come, and the singers of the category of Lata, Asha and Geeta still had to find their places in the top bracket. The singers of the prior years were the more sought after. Singers like Shamshad Begum, Khursheed, Hamida Bano, Zohra Bai, and yes, Parul Ghosh and Kanan Devi etc. Given their era, these names were the busy stars, and were well sought after.

As I checked the Geet Kosh listings, I find only four instances when Shamshad Begum and Hamida Bano have come together in performing a song. Two of these are plain duets, and in the other, they are accompanied by a third singer. As in this one. There is a male voice that accompanies the two ladies in this song, but that voice is not identified. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to kindly help to identify.

The 1948 film ‘Grihasthi’ has 8 songs. The music composition is by Ghulam Mohammed. Of the eight songs, six are penned by Wahid Qureshi, and the remaining two are written by Shakeel Badayuni. This song is by Shakeel Sb.

It is a fun, time pass type of song – a song about motor cars and their owners. And how the other people react to them. Not only that it is a very interesting give and take, but also captures the haughtiness (snootiness?) of the motor car owners. And mind you, we are being presented these thoughts from an era when owning a motor car itself was a rare thing.

But as I said, it is a fun song, and I am sure you will find yourself smiling at it. Enjoy.

Lalita Pawar in one of her interviews in 1975 had mentioned about this film “Grahasti” as being one of the biggest hits in her early career. This film was remade by Kishore Sahu in 1963 as “Ghar Basake Dekho” which was almost like a scene by scene copy.
