PARAAYI AAG (1948) was produced under the banner of Great India Pictures and was directed by Najam Naqvi. The star cast included Munawwar Sultana, Ulhas, Mumtaz (Madhubala), Sheri, A Shah, W M Khan, Jilloo Bai etc. The story of the film revolves around the mistaken identities of the two prospective brides and bridegrooms. This leads to first, the comical situations and later, to some melodrama before misunderstandings are sorted out.
Two young men, Anand Kumar (Ulhas) and Arjun Kumar (Sheri), unknown to each other are known by their nick name ‘Kumar’. Anand is the son of a rich man Hukumatrai (W M Khan) and is the prospective son-in-law of Seth Daulatram (A Shah). Arjun on the other hand is penniless and looking for a job, is the prospective son-in-law of a poor widower, Ramdas. Both Anand and Arjun arrive by the same train to a town where Hukumatrai and Daulatram live. Both Kumars by some coincidences reach to the wrong house – Anand to Ramdas’s house and Arjun to Hukumatrai’s house.
As both Hukumatrai and Ramdas had not seen their perspective son-in-laws, they accept them as guests and are introduced to their respective daughters, Laxmi (Munawwar Sultana) and Shobha (Madhubala). Since both of them has also not seen their prospective husbands, Laxmi presumes Arjun as Anand and Shobha takes Anand as Arjun. Over a period of time, each of the girls falls in love with their wronged fiancés. By this time, both the young men realises the fact that they were not the right men for the girls. But they still reciprocate the love. When it comes to betrothal ceremony, Arjun escapes from Daulatram’s house to avoid detection by Hukumatrai, Anand’s father.
With the arrival of Hukumatrai, the misunderstanding is cleared and mistakes corrected. However, since both the young men and the girls love their first acquaintances, none of them agrees to marry the original choices of their respective fathers. Fresh misunderstanding is deliberately created between all the fours so that all of them agree to the original choices of their fathers. However, with the timely intervention of Laxmi’s mother (Jilloo Bai), both the couples marry according to their own liking. While Daulatram accepts the changed situation, for Hukumatrai, the shock is unbearable and he dies of heart attack.

The film had 8 songs penned by Tanvir Naqvi (6) and Akhtar-ul-Iman (2) of which 4 songs have been covered in the Blog. Going by the story of the film, the songs are a mix bag of happiness and sadness. Here is the 5th song ‘bhool jaa wo pyaar ke rangeen fasaane bhool jaa’ from the film to appear in the Blog. The song is sung by Hamida Bano. Tanvir Naqvi wrote the song which was set to music by Ghulam Mohammed.
Hameeda Bano has beautifully rendered this song with all the emotional upheaval the character on the screen is going through.
