“Pagli”(1943) was directed by Shankar Mehta for Maheshwari Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Padam, Asha (Posle ?), Kapoor, Aruna, Raza, Anjana, Ramesh, Nafees, Bhaag Singh, Hamida, Charlie, Mohini, Billoo, Deveshwar, Anand, Raj Monga, Kavita etc in it.

The movie had four music directors in it, viz. Jhande Khan, Pt Govind Ram, Amir Ali and Rashid Atre. The movie had ten songs in it and music director wise breakup is known only for four songs. There were two lyricists in the movie, viz. Qamar Jalalabadi and Melaram Wafa. The distribution of their workload is not known for nine songs.

Two songs, including the one whose full details were known, have been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from “Pagli”(1943) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Shamshad Begam. That is the only detail known for this song. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this song vis avis its lyricist and music director.

The song had some words that are unfamiliar to me. So I have not been able to get the lyrics of this song right to my satisfaction. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections in the lyrics as applicable.

Song-Husn ki ye meharbaaniyaan phir kahaan (Pagli)(1943) Singer-Shamshad Begam

Lyrics

husn ki ye meharbaani phir kahaan
husn ki ye meharbaani phir kahaan
ishq ki ye kaamraani(?) phir kahaan
ishq ki ye kaamraani(?) phir kahaan

loot lena taanjawaani(?) ke maze
loot lena taanjawaani(?) ke maze
loot lena taanjawaani(?) phir kahaan
loot lena taanjawaani(?) phir kahaan

A nice ghazal.

Kaamraani = sucess, prosperty.
I think the word ‘kaamraani’ fits well in the she’r.

I hear
‘loot lena thhaa jawaani ke maze
loot le naadaan jawaani phir kahaan’.

Nice song !!
Sandandji is right . Kaamraani means ‘Sucess”.
The other two lines are…
‘loot lena taa-jawaani ke maze ( taa = upto. )
loot le naadaan, jawaani phir kahaan’
It means: enjoy the beauty of love while you are young.
enjoy it now, as young age will not be back, you fool.( nadda=stupid, fool)

I have gone through discussion on Google Group about the distribution of 8 songs (out of 10) of ‘Pagli’ (1943) as per the discussions among persons like Jayraman, Naniwadekar etc, based on an Urdu article as well as the information available of 78 rpm records to the extent given in a couple of songs. As per the discussions, the distribution of 8 songs (out of 10) among the MDs is as under :

MD: Gobindram
1. gulshan mein ummedon ke
2. Ummeed tadapti hai

MD: Amir Ali
3. husn ke yeh meharbaani kahaan
4. piye jaa piye jaa
78 rpm record No.JP.1058

MD: Ustad Jhande Khan
5. yeh geet papiha gaata hai
6. o bhoolnewaale main tujhe

MD: Rashid Atre
7. gaa re sakhi mann ki taaron se
8. o aiyyo main aaya
