A voice, that is as soft and pleasing as cool breeze. And a singing that is most natural, with no efforts for any artificial embellishments to the rendition.  A voice that is not formally trained. And yet, this voice and the persona behind it, have become synonymous with being the first lady of Bangla cinema.

Remembering Kaanan Devi on her remembrance day. She passed away this day (17th July) in 1992.

A time was when New Theatres was known for two stalwarts artists; KL Saigal was considered the pillar of strength, and Kaanan Devi was famous as the beauty attraction. When ‘Vidyapati’ was released in 1937, Kaanan Devi was appearing in just her second film with New Theatres. The film was power packed with compellingly strong artists – Prithviraj Kapoor, Pahadi Sanyal and KC Dey. The music of the film was a hit. Of course, the songs of KC Dey were rated as superlative. But the surprise pick for the year was the songs sung by Kaanan Devi, who held her own in the company of her more experienced fellow cast members.

She was born into a music aware and music learned family, on 22nd April, 1916. She just a child of 10 years when circumstances maneuvered her into a role of the breadwinner for the family, due to an untimely demise of her father. It was the era of silent films. She worked in a string of films. As the silent era gave way to the talkie films, Kaanan Devi quickly grew into a position of strength in the industry – based on her experience as an actress and the attraction of her voice. ‘Chaar Darvesh’ (1933) was the first Hindi film in which she played the lead role opposite to Trilok Kapoor. In 1936 she joined New Theatres. ‘Mukti’ and ‘Vidyapati’ were her very first films, in 1937. There was no looking back after that.

With a long string of successes, both in Bangla and Hindi cinema, she came to Bombay for a very brief stint. Just one film, ‘Chandrashekhar’ in 1948, opposite to Ashok Kumar. She returned to Calcutta, and continued to be a force in the Bangla film industry. She established her own production house by the name Shrimati Pictures, and produced 11 films. In 1965, after the release of ‘Abhay O Srikant’, she reduced her activities in the film industry and slowly retired – after a career that saw her appear in about 70 films, both Hindi and Bangla, and recorded 90 songs in Hindi for approximately 20 films.

She passed away this day, in 1992.

Today, I bring on to this blog an absolute gem of a song from the 1947 film ‘Tum Aur Main’. This film makes its debut on the blog with this song. The words are from the pen of songwriter Zakir Husain, and the music is composed by Robin Chatterji.

Goodness, such a lovely song of aspirations of love, calling out to the beloved with the promises of her love and abandonment, with a plea to light the lamps of new hope in life. The words are sheer poetry that is simply superb,

janam janam ko saunpa maine
tumko apna jeevan
preet magan rakho isko
ya virahaa vyaakul saajan

Listening to this song has been such lovely new experience with the emotions of love. Rendered with such expression by the singer, it surely will capture your heart.

Song – Asha Deep Jalavo Saajan  (Tum Aur Main) (1947) Singer – Kaanan Devi, Lyrics – Zakir Hussain, MD – Robin Chatterji

Lyrics

aasha
aasha deep jalaavo saajan
aasha deep jalaavo

aasha
aasha deep jalaavo saajan

jeevan path ke andhere mein
jeevan path ke andhere mein
tum chanda ban jaavo
jaavo
tum chanda ban jaavo
aasha
aasha deep jalaavo saajan
aasha deep jalaavo

janam janam ko saunpa maine
tumko apna jeevan
preet magan rakho isko
ya virahaa vyaakul saajan
janam janam ko saunpa maine
tumko apna jeevan
preet magan rakho isko
ya virahaa vyaakul saajan
apne aap sambhaara main
tum jaise isey nibhaavo
aasha
aasha deep jalaavo saajan
aasha deep jalaavo

aaj tod ke aayi hoon main
apne bandhan saare
aaj tod ke aayi hoon main
apne bandhan saare
madhur muralia ban ke rahungi
madhur muralia ban ke rahungi
tere haath mein pyaare
maine tumko apnaaya hai
tum mujhko apnaavo
aasha
aasha deep jalaavo saajan
aasha deep jalaavo
