Ah yes – ‘Hunterwaali’. Seems that just like Tarzan, ‘Hunterwaali’ has been quite a favorite title and theme for film producers in India. The original ‘Hunterwaali’ was released in 1935 – with Fearless Nadia assaying the title role. This was followed in 1943 with a title variation of ‘Hunterwaali Ki Beti’. Then in 1959 came another ‘Hunterwaali’, this time the title role being played by Mehru. In 1972, came a production from the south. The female lead role was played by Jyotilakshmi. In 1978, yes, one more ‘Hunterwaali’ film was released. And guess, the lady playing the title role – it is Bindu.
[Ed Note: Atul ji points out that there is another ‘Hunterwaali’ film right there from the year 1959; the title is ‘Miss Hunterwaali’.]

After 1978, for lack of recorded data, it cannot be certainly said what other ‘Hunterwaali’ films came. There is a Bhojpuri film by this name in 2014-15. YouTube also informs us that there was a film by this title, produced in Pakistan also, in 1988.

As per the details recorded in HFGK, the film is produced by Madhav Rao and Rustom Irani under the banner of Golden Movies Corporation, Bombay and is directed by BJ Patel. The cast of actors is listed as Mehru, Samar Roy, Habeeb, Ram Raseela, Mirajkar, Jeet Bala, Kailash, Shri Bhagwan, Sattar, and Mohammad amongst others. Five songs are listed for this film. All the songs are written by Shaad. As I checked for this lyricists name in the Geet Kosh, I find that his name appears in just one more film viz., ‘Rifle Girl’ in 1958, which is also already represented here on our blog. Interestingly, the music director for ‘Rifle Girl’ (1958) and ‘Hunterwaali’ (1959) is the same – Harbans. In the Geet Kosh, we see his name appear in eight films over a period of 1958 to 1966.

Coming to the song itself. This wonderful melodious song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur. The beginning of the song is so stirring. The chorus sound of “Lallal Laara, Lallaara” immediately speaks of a promise of a wonderful song to follow. And the promise is verily kept by the music director. One may listen to this tune and may comment that this tune is familiar, and that it is adapted from such and such and such other songs. But that analysis is not important. The lilt and the joy in this melody speaks for itself. Yet once again, the observations pan out – an obscure film (1960s and earlier), unknown or really very less known artists, nothing much available as information – all these characteristics combine to ensure some very lovely and mostly unheard, unfamiliar songs. This instance is no less.

So with this lilting song, the 1958 version of ‘Hunterwaali’ makes its debut on our blog today.

Song – Ye Behta Behta Paani, Ye Rut Ye Jawaani  (Hunterwaali) (1959) Singer – Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics – Shaad, MD – Harbans

लल्ल’ल लारा
लल्लारा
हो ओ ओ ओ
लल्ल’ल लारा
लल्लारा
आ आ आ आ

In 1959 itself, we also have a movie called “Miss Hunterwaali.” 🙂

Ah yes, right Atul ji,

I missed that one. 🙂
Thanks

Sudhir

There was a music director called Harbans Lal as well those days. Are Harbans and Harbans Lal different ?

Atul ji,

Yes, there is another name that appears – in Geet Kosh it appears as Pandit Harbans Lal. I will check on this.

Also, request to Arun ji to please help to address this query.

According to the famous and knowledgeable collector S.Jayaraman, Harbans was the youngest brother of Pt. Amarnath.

If I rememebr right Harbans the composer was the son of Pt. Amarnath, the eldest brother of Husnlal-Bhagatram duo. He is referred severally as Harbans. Habans lal or pt. Harbans.
ofcourse I am not very sure about it.

He was from Punjab. First he used to call himself Pt. Harbans lal, but when he got only stunt films, he dropped the Pt. prefix. His first film was Ghar ki Numaish-49, then came Sachha pyar-50,Naagan-50,Johari-51 ( some very lovely songs by Asha bhosle), Rifle girl-58, Hunterwali-59,black Rider-60, Shahi farmaan-61, black shadow-61, Madam Zapata-62, jai ho muhabbat ki-62 and Naagin aur Sapera-66.

Pt. Husnalal’s family and sons stay in Delhi. Sudhir ji can get some information from them. I know that there is enemity within all brothers’ families and they do not talk, but information can be got from them. AK ji knows that family very well.

Now this confirms….

Surjit Singh ( He is different person, NOT Dr.Surjit singh ji of US)

Arun Kumar Deshmukh ji…In a Group of Punjabi Films Sangeet, this information was also given by Bhim Raj Garg ji, noted film journalist, that Pt.Harbans Lal was elder brother of Music Mastero Husn Lal Bhagtram.and has given music under different names like HARBANS, Pt. Hem Raj and also Ratan Deep Hem Raj. Harbans gave music in many memorable Punjabi movies like Chowdhari Karnail Singh,(1960) Kiklee (1960), Eh Dharti Punjab Di(1963), Bharjaee (1964) etc. You can contact Bhim Raj Garg ji for more information in this respect.

must be a telugu dubbed or remake film by the look of lobby card image of the movie

Here is the curtains for Harbanslal’s identity….
AK ji has received this email from Dinesh Prabhakar ji-son of Pt.Husnlal ( he had asked him if Harbanslal was the son of Pt. Amarnath)….

“Dear AK

You r right Harbans Lal ji was son of Pt Amar Nath Ji eldest brother of Husain Lal Bhagat Ram Ji

Regards
Dinesh Prabhakar ”

So, this settles the matter. I am glad that my original information was correct.

Dear Arun ji,

Thanks so much for all your communication efforts to get confirmation on establishing the identity of music director Harbans.

These confirmations are coming from authentic sources. And they provide much more information, that will help to connect a few disparate names in the list of music directors of Hindi films.

Thanks so much once again

Sudhir

Sudhir ji,
Thanks.
When you ask me something, I must give you correct answer.
Finally, here is what Bhim Raj Garg, the film journalist wrote to me some time back…..
” Bhim Raj Garg yes he was the son of Pt. Amar Nath. I met him many times during 1985-1995 ”
