“Sarkaari Mehmaan”(1978) is by now an obscure movie, but I was aware of this movie when it was released. Seeing that it was a non Amitabh Bachchan movie, I considered it a B grade movie, not worth my time. Nevertheless, I was not averse to watch a movie if I could get to watch it free. When I used to return back from college in the evening, I came down by walk, which had the added advantage that I came across most movie halls of Ranchi that were located on a single road called Main Road. The newest cinema hall, which also happened to be located closest to my residence was called Sujata Cinema. I found out that while one needed to buy tickets while the movie began, no one checked tickets after half time. So one could wait for the half time when movie watchers came out to buy peanuts, popcorn etc. When they went back inside, their tickets was not checked again. So it was possible to enter the hall in the second half and sit in a vacant seat and watch the second half of the movie. I was able to watch a few flop movies (with very few ticket buyers for them) this way. If my memory is not playing tricks, this movie “Sarkaari Mehmaan”(1978) was one such movie. I entered the movie hall after second half, watched the movie and left the hall after THE END along with other bonafide movie watchers who had the misfortune of buying tickets of this movie.

I watched the movie but did not understand the story line because I had missed the first half. Not that it bothered me much. I could see that the movie was no great shakes.

Now, more than 45 years later, I had even forgotten that I had watched this movie once upon a time. Those who were not around at that time would not even be aware that there was a movie called “Sarkaari Mehmaan”(1978). I became reaquainted with this movie title only just now when I was searching for movies that had not yet made their debut in the blog.

I had forgotten about the movie as soon as I left the hall. I did not even remember any songs even though a couple of songs got played in the second half of the movie.

From HFGK, I note that “Sarkaari Mehmaan”(1978) was directed by N D Kothari for Mewad films, Bombay. This “social” movie had Vinod Khanna, Jasmine (new discovery), Bindu, Ranjeet, Amjad Khan, Om Shivpuri, Satyen Kappoo, Jagdeep, Indrani Mukherjee, Padma Khanna, Manju Bansal, Manmohan, Shekhar Purohit, Bhagwan, Sundar, Polson, Johny Whisky, Birbal, Radheshyam, Vikas Anand, Manik Chaudhary, Master Bittu, Madhu Apte, Tuntun, Viju Khote, Shakeel, Umesh Khanna etc in it.

The movie had five songs. All of them were Asha Bhonsle solos. My guess is that all of them were of the same genre viz mujra songs.

Here is the first song from “Sarkaari Mehmaan”(1978) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Naqsh Llayalpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravindra Jain.

The song is picturised as a mujra dance song on Padma Khanna. The audience of the mujra include Vinod Khanna and Amjad Khan who are seen occupying VIP enclosure in the kotha. 🙂

I have no recollection whether this was one of the songs that I watched in the movie hall when I had entered there without ticket in the second half. But my guess is that all mujra songs in this movie were more or less similar.

Under normal circumstances, I would ask our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie, but I would appear foolish doing that because I was one of the few movie goers who had actually watched the movie. If I have forgotten what I saw in the movie, why should I assume that others would have done any better after watching this movie. 🙂 By the way the movie is available online. So those who are interested can watch the movie to find out what it was all about. Personally I would still give this movie a miss. I would only watch the songs. By the way, all songs of this movie seem to be available.

This is quite a hummable song to listen to and the picturisation too is good. Padma Khanna has performed a nice mujra dance. This song is one that would qualify to be posted in series “Kamsune / ansune song of Asha Bhonsle” that our Satyajit Rajurkar jee is presenting on the blog these days.

With this song, “Sarkaari Mehmaan”(1978) makes its debut in the blog.

Song-Lucknow chhoota to Dilli ne loota (Sarkaari Mehmaan)(1978) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics- Naqsh Llayalpuri, MD- Ravindra Jain

Lyrics

lucknow chhoota to dilli ne loota
lucknow chhoota to dilli ne loota
ye maana kabhee main naadaan thhee
ye maana kabhee main naadaan thhee
yaaron ne dikhaaya mujhe har khwaab jhoothha
lucknow chhoota to dilli ne loota
lucknow chhoota to dilli ne loota

dilli shahar se kiya jab kinaara
to bambai mein chamka kismat ka sitaara
dilli shahar se kiya jab kinaara
to bambai mein chamka kismat ka sitaara
hazaaron hai dil mere kadmon ke neeche
ke rehtee hai daulat mere aage peechhe
lutaane lage
log mujhpe dil o jaan
mere khwaab karte
hain sabko pareshaan
wo shohrat hui
mere naam kee
haaye wo shohrat hui
mere naam kee
ho ab main dikhaatee firoon sab ko angoothha
lucknow chhoota to dilli ne loota
lucknow chhoota to dilli ne loota

meree nazar ka bana jo nishaana
wo raha umar bhar mera hee deewaana
meree nazar ka bana jo nishaana
wo raha umar bhar mera hee deewaana
kai khoon kartee hoon main dil dahaade
ke kaanoon bhee mera kuchh na bigaade
ye fankaar maara
gajardaar mara
sabhee ko bana ke gunehgaar maara
mere haath mein hain dukhtee ragen
mere haath mein hain dukhtee ragen
ho usi ne manaaya mujhe jo mujh se rootha
lucknow chhoota to dilli ne loota
lucknow chhoota to dilli ne loota
ye maana kabhee main naadaan thhee
haay maana kabhee main naadaan thhee
ho yaaron ne dikhaaya mujhe har khwaab jhoothha
lucknow chhoota to dilli ne loota
lucknow chhoota to dilli ne loota
