Today’s post is to pay our tributes to the Legendary Singer Mohd Rafi who was born on this day 24th December in 1924 and passed away on 31st July’1980.
On this occasion I am presenting a song sung by him from the ‘1981’ movie ‘Maan Gaye Ustaad’.
On the screen this song is performed by actor Om Prakash.
That way this post also serves the purpose to pay our tributes to Om Prakash whose birth anniversary was on 19th December.

We can see that three songs from this movie ‘Maan Gaye Ustaad’ have been posted on the blog so far. Though this movie has already completed its’ ten-year run on the blog it is yet to be covered with all its songs.
Today’s song is the fourth song from this movie to be posted on the blog. Incidentally all the three songs from this movie earlier were presented by Peevesie’s Mom ji.
Today’s song is sung by Mohd Rafi. On screen it is Om Prakash who lip-syncs this song ‘praising the lord’ and seeking his help for ‘change of heart’ for Amjad Khan. I guess so, since Amjad Khan is also shown driving a car with a child artist in the picturisation of this song.
Let us listen to this beautiful song now…

Today 24th July 2022 is the eighty-fifth birth anniversary of actor, producer, director, writer, and lyricist Manoj Kumar.
He was born as Harikishan Giri Goswami on 24th July 1937 in Abbottabad (then in North-West frontier province of British India and now in Pakistan).
Manoj Kumar has been one of the many favorites of us, those who have grown up in the years of ‘seventies’, or people like me who were born in end-sixties and grow up in the ‘1970s’.
We get to watch many of his old movies including black and white movies (e.g., ‘Woh Kaun Thhi’ etc), and the current movies released during the period till eighties and then nineties. Since Manoj Kumar’s movies were having good music and songs they were liked very much. And apart from that his movies had his ‘special touch’ in those which he directed, or he acted. Manoj Kumar has his special place in the history of Hindi Films.
Apart from being an actor Manoj Kumar has been a Director, Producer, Writer, Editor, and Lyricist too.
Today on his birth anniversary I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Santosh-1989’ which is penned by him only. Out of the seven songs this movie has Manoj Kumar had written lyrics for one song in this movie. (Remaining six songs were written by Santosh Anand).
‘Santosh-1989’ was an ‘East-n-West Movies’ presentation. It was produced and directed by Balbir Wadhawan.
Hansraj Wadhawan was the production controller of this movie.
It had Manoj Kumar, Rakhee, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Prem Chopra, Nirupa Roy, Kamini Kaushal, Amjad Khan, Madan Puri, Sarika, Abhi Bhattacharya, Krishna Dhawan, Pinchoo Kapoor, Om Shivpuri, Praveen Kumar, and others.
Story of ‘Santosh-1989’ was written by Kaushal Bharti. Editing of this movie was done by V.V. Kamat (assisted by Ashok Naik).
As mentioned above this movie had seven songs written by Santosh Anand (six songs) and Manoj Kumar (one song).
Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
The songs from this movie are good to listen and I have presented four songs from this movie earlier on the blog.
Following is the list of songs this movie had. Four of these seven songs have been posted on the blog earlier.
SNo | Title of the Song | Lyricist | Singer/s | Posted On the blog |
---|---|---|---|---|
01 | Are logon tumhe kya hai | Santosh Anand | Lata Mangeshkar | 05.03.2022 |
02 | Bataao tumhen pyaar kaise karoon | Santosh Anand | Nitin Mukesh, Asha Bhonsle | 27.06.2022 |
03 | Kahkahon ke liye | Santosh Anand | Mahendra Kapoor | |
4 | Yoon lagne lagi aajkal zindagaani | Santosh Anand | Lata Mangeshkar, Nitin Mukesh | 27.06.2018 |
05 | Aaj main bechain hoon | Santosh Anand | Mahendra Kapoor, chorus | 09.01.2022 |
06 | Bansi waale ne gher lai | Santosh Anand | Lata Mangeshkar | |
07 | Tera allah beli | Manoj Kumar | Mahendra Kapoor, chorus |
Today’s song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and chorus. Amjad Khan is lip-syncing the song in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor and the picturization shows that this song is happening in the jail premises where all the jail inmates are performing and the police officers also watching their performance (which should be a part of extracurricular activities I guess 😊). In the backdrop of the performance there is a plan to help Manoj Kumar to run away from the jail custody which he succeeds (by the time the song ends) however the Police Inspector finally comes to know of this, and he shoots Amjad Khan.
Let us now enjoy this song written by Manoj Kumar.
Today on his birth anniversary we wish Manoj Kumar a ‘very happy birthday’ and a healthy and peaceful life ahead …

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 24
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The post title is always a dead giveaway, that this song belongs to the series that is recalling some of the interesting reuse of earlier songs in Hindi films.
This selection is a medley of songs that appear in the film ‘Pet, Pyaar aur Paap’ (1984), at different points in the story line. The accompanying video is an edited composite video, which brings together all the hilarious comic scenes wherein the earlier songs are used in the film.
The film comes from the banner of Sunitha Cine Arts, Madras and is produced by Mrs. G Lalitha. The story, screenplay and direction are by Dorai. The film had three songs written by Bhushan Banmali, and the music is by Bappi Lahiri.
The star cast is listed as Raj Babbar, Smita Patil, Aruna Irani, Tanuja, Hina Kausar, Chaman Bagga, Sulabha Deshpande, Mukri, Govind, Riaz, Alok, Hanif, Sushmita, Master Bobby, Lal Chand, Baby Najma, Rahul, Dulari, Deepak, Dileep, Madhav, CS Dubey, Mohan Sherry, Ram and Debu. There is also a good collection of guest artists – Mehmood, Amjad Khan, Vinod Mehra, Moushumi Chatterji and Amitabh Bachchan.
The film tells the story about an extra marital love affair of a truck driver (Raj Babbar) with a lady (Smita Patil) who lives in extreme poverty in a hutment in a slum area. The truck driver already has a family, something that he hides from the lady to start with. As the story unfolds, the secrets are revealed to both the lady love and the wife of the truck driver. The film ends in a sore tragedy with the death of the lady in stark circumstances, leaving behind an infant girl. The saving grace of the film is that the truck driver’s wife accepts the child and brings her home. The film is not very strong and convincing, in terms of characters and the progress of the story line, at least in my opinion.
It is interesting to note – this film came about in the time when the actual extra marital affair between Raj Babbar and Smita Patil was in full swing in real life. Raj Babbar had left his wife Nadira Babbar, to be with Smita Patil. On her side, this affair drew very sharp criticism for Smita from her fan base and her social activist colleagues. Smita was very active in the feminist movement in India, and supported and worked for many causes for women. Some trivia located for this film includes a small nugget that says Raj Babbar and Smita Patil financed this film.
The film that was released in 1984, became a harbinger for the future events to follow, in real life. Just two years later in 1986, Smita Patil died two weeks after giving birth to Prateik Babbar. The cause for her death is noted as complications due to child birth – a scenario that played out similarly in this film – the lady dies after giving birth to the child of the truck driver. Smita’s death is a strange and scary episode wherein reel life meets the real life in all its harshness.
The comic relief in the film is provided by Amjad Khan. He owns a cycle repair shop in the slum area. His shop is situated just opposite to the hutment of the lady. He too is a married man with children. And he too has eyes for the lady. He owns a record player, and plays music whenever the situation demands it. He expresses his love and desires by playing appropriate songs on the record player. Of course, the effect on the target audience is actually the opposite to what he expects. These small interludes in the film provide some jocularity in an otherwise mostly slow and sad film.
It is a real treat to watch Amjad play out these comedy scenes. He is at his hilarious best as he tries to imitate the action for the song that is being played, and then when challenged by Smita, his efforts to recover and control the damage are equally mirthful. I am sure you will greatly enjoy this medley.
The repeat songs are played in original, as they are being played from the records. So the credits for all these songs become due to the original artists.
Another interesting reuse episode. And yes, some more still to come.

Hullo Atuldom
“Holi kab hai? kab hai holi? kab? kab?” – these are the famous lines mouthed by the most dreaded daaku of Ramgarh. He was wanted ‘dead or alive’ and carried a reward of ‘pachhas hazaar’ on his head. And from his den he declared rather pompously “Yahan se pachhas pachhas kos door gaon mein … jab bachcha raat ko rota hai, toh maa kehti hai bete so ja … so ja nahi to Gabbar Singh aa jayega”. With the most simple and not-so-profound dialogues like ‘Kitne Aadmi The’, ‘Jo Darr Gaya Samjho Marr Gaya’ and ‘Tera kya hoga Kalia’, Gabbar Singh alias Amjad Khan had arrived on the Bollywood scene, giving life to one of the most celebrated and iconic characters in Hindi cinema.
Born in undivided India’s Peshawar in 1940, he was the first child of actor Jayant (Zakaria Khan). He was a bright student who had a Masters in Philosophy and loved to read English poets like Keats and Wordsworth and could debate on political theories or philosophies of Plato, Socrates and even Dr. Radhakrishnan. After his M.Phil he ventured on to the world of theatre to give a chance to his passion of acting that he had inherited from his father. That is where he was spotted by the writer duo Salim-Javed who recommended him to Ramesh Sippy and rest of the story is well known to all the fans of this wonderful actor.
That was 1975. Post ‘Sholay’ Amjad Khan went on to live a number of memorable characters on celluloid. Can anyone forget the risk-taking best friend Bishan of Kishan (Amitabh) in ‘Yaarana’, or the funny policeman of Kumar Gaurav’s debut ‘Love Story’. He was unforgettable as Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in Satyajit Ray’s ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’. What versatility. He was happy that his directors and writers saw more than a villain or a daaku in him and thanked them for not typecasting him else, we would never have seen his comic timing and his mastery in emoting any kind of role.
Today it is 28 years since his passing and we have a song that shows him trying to shake a leg with Mithun. The song is penned by Farooq Kaiser and set to tune by Bappi Lahiri. It is from the 1985 release ‘Maa Kasam’ which was directed by Shibu Mitra & had a cast of Mithun, Amjad Khan, Ranjeet, Divya Rana, Sushma Seth and Pran. It was a typical masala movie complete with dances where the lead actors are in disguise etc.
I stumbled on this song recently and filed it away to post it in remembrance of Amjad Khan. It is sung by Mohd Aziz, Vijay Benedict and Parvati Khan. We also have Kalpana Iyer as part of the group dance. We can also see Guddi Maruti and Sundar present in this clip. Just to know why everyone is dressed in tribal outfits which the Red Indians will claim as their traditional wear I need to see this movie.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 18
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
So this suggestion and reminder from Anekant ji, dropped into my mail box yesterday. And I take this opportunity to present this repeat song that is so appropriate for the continuing celebrations of Navratri.
The original song – “Tu Ne Mujhe Bulaaya Sheraanwaaliye“, is from the film ‘Aasha’ (1980) and on screen it is performed by Jeetendra and others. Reena Roy is present in the picturization. Fast forward eight years to 1988 and the song has been repeated in the film ‘Do Waqt Ki Roti’ (1988), as is. Meaning, it is not a re-recording. The song has been replayed as original. The only difference is that a full antaraa is deleted. The original song has two antaraas, and this reuse song has only one.
‘Do Waqt Ki Roti’ is produced by MP Aggarwal and is directed by Satpaal. The primary cast of actors is listed as Feroz Khan, Sanjeev Kumar, Reena Roy, Sulakshana Pandit, Nirupa Roy, Amjad Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Satyendra Kappu, Ranjeet, and Jagdeep. The film has five songs, other that this reuse song.
The interesting similarity that the music directors of these two films are the same. So maybe that is why the reuse may not have been a problem. However, as usual, this reuse song is not listed in the list of songs of this film.
Today is the sixth day of Navratri celebrations. The incarnation of the Goddess Mother that is worshipped today is Maa Kaalratri or Maa Mahakaali. I would like to discuss this appearance of the Mother in a little more detail. It is quite possible that the readers may be quite familiar with this description.
The description is as per the Devi Bhagwat. As it their wont – the Devatas have been defeated by two powerful aruras (demons) – Shumbh and Nishumbh, and had lost the occupation of the Kingdom of Heavens. The commander of the asura armies was another demon named Raktbeej. Raktbeej had a boon that he had received from Brahma ji. As is usual the asuras, after long periods of penance and austerities, would always end up asking for the blessing of longevity – that they could never be destroyed. This boon has been asked for by the asuras in many different forms. Raktbeej asked for this boon in the form that in case he is in a battle, and he is wounded, then when his blood touches the ground in form of drops, every drop will immediately form a replica of the Raktbeej himself. So even if he is wounded, just by the result of this blessing, an army of Rakbeej clones will be created. By this way, Raktbeej may never be vanquished, and he would only get stronger with additional forces of clones of himself to support him.
The Devatas were in despair, and they prayed to the Mother Goddess. She appeared and asked them what were they seeking from Her. They explained the predicament in their battle against Shumbh and Nishumbh – that they, the Devatas will never be able to defeat the asuras, as long as their commander Raktbeej is leading them. The Mother Goddess assured them of help, and sent them away to wage another war on the asuras. The battle started. Devatas started to target Raktbeej, but his blessing still obstructed the Devatas to make any headway in the fight. In fact, when Devatas would inflict any blow Raktbeej, the drops of blood from his body, as they touched the ground, would sprout into another Raktbeej, thus strengthening the army of asuras.
The Mother Goddess then took on the form of Maa Kaali and joined the battle. The appearance and demeanor of the Mother in the Kaali form was frightening. Completely black in appearance from head to toe, wearing black, long black hair loose open and waving, a garland made of skulls in the neck, and wearing a skirt made from the limbs of the dead, with a khadag (a sword like weapon, curved in a different way) in one hand, and bowl made from the outer layer of a coconut, in the other hand. The fearful appearance was further enhanced with a long red tongue that perpetually remained outside the mouth, waving like a blood red serpent.
She reached close to Raktbeej and hit him with the khadag. An injured Raktbeej started to bleed from his wounds. Maa Kaali reached out with her waving tongue and started to lap up every drop of his blood that oozed out of his wounds. Working feverishly with her long tongue, she picked up very drop of blood from Raktbeej’s body, and continued to strike him. Losing blood, he started to become weak, as he continued to lose blood and his strength. And the boon was going waste because Maa Kali did not allow the drops of his blood to reach the ground. Finally, Maa Kaali cut off the head of Raktbeej with a blow from her khadag. To catch the falling blood from the dethatched neck, Maa Kali held the coconut bowl under it, once again not allowing even a drop of blood to fall on the ground. As the cup would overflow, Maa Kaali would drink from it, to make room to hold more blood.
The appearance and sight of the Mother was really frightful. She seemed to not be under Her own control. Waving the khadag in anger, she started to destroy anything and anybody that crossed her path. The army of asuras was thus decimated, but the Mother could not be stopped. The Devatas then prayed to Lord Shiv and requested him to rescue them from the wrath of Maa Kaali. Lord Shiv appeared to face Maa Kaali, but he too could not dissuade her and calm her down. She continued in her stride, destroying everything in her path. Then Lord Shiv lay down on the ground, in the path where she was headed. Maa Kaali continued in her stride and finally set a foot on Lord Shiv himself. Realizing suddenly that she had stepped on to her own consort, she came to a halt. Her anger dissipated, she stepped back and became calm.
There is a reason that describe this episode today. Today is the day of the worship of Maa Kaalratri, or Maa Kaali, and so it is appropriate to recount her legend. I remember hearing this narrative recounted to me by elders, or reading it in books, and I always used to wonder at the bizarre description of this event. Years passed and as I came to high school, I would finally get a reasonable explanation of this narrative. In the biology class, as we read about viruses and infections and deadly diseases, it suddenly came together in my mind that this description of Maa Kaali is so analogous to weeding out a deadly disease. Raktbeej is the infection that multiplies incessantly. The more you try to root it out, the more it spreads. Like the drops of blood falling on ground, it is the viruses that attack healthy cells, they multiply, and then attack more healthy cells. Maa Kaali is likened to the antidote to the infection, that attempts to cut down the avenues for the infection to spread, not allowing it to reach more healthy cells thus depriving it of its resources to multiply.
That is quite much the situation that is faced by the world in present times. An unbridled and unknown new infection is running rampant through the human population, incurring a very high toll of fatalities. The mechanism of isolation and social distancing is analogous to not allowing the drops of blood of Raktbeej to fall on the ground, and not find newer option to breed and grow. The ideas that had formed in my mind during my high school studies of biology, are kind of getting reflected in the events of this worldwide spread of the deadly virus infection. The containment solution is in being isolated and not allowing propagation. Countries that are practicing this measure, are being somewhat successful in minimizing the fatal damage to the population. And the nations that, for whatever reason of culture or politics are failing to exercise this discipline, are on the way to incur heavy losses in terms of human life. A scenario that is described in our ancient texts is playing out in the real world with a very eerie congruence.
So, the day to pray to Maa Kaali today, is the day also to understand this mechanism of disallowing Raktbeej to replicate itself and to curtail the damage that can be done by an uncontrolled spread of this contagion.
May the Mother Goddess Maa Kaali appear once again on this earth, and destroy this Raktbeej like malady, cleanse this earth and rescue her children.
Ameen.

“Yaarana” was a movie that was released in 1981. It was produced by H A Nadiadwala and directed by Rakesh Kumar. It had Amitabh Bachchan and Amjad Khan playing friends whose friendship was rooted in childhood. The story showed the love and affection between the two who were from different financial backgrounds. They would go to any extent to make each other’s lives comfortable.
Todays’ song comes at a point where the rich friend Bishan (Amjad) has just discovered that he has been swindled by his uncle (mama) Jeevan and he has had to mortgage his favourite cruise liner “Kishan” so that he can put up his friend’s debut stage show. And further to make ends-meet he has begun working on the liner as a captain.
The song is when a group of school kids under the guidance of Farida Jalal request him for a song. As the song progresses the mama and his son (Jeevan and Ranjeet) slowly take over the running of the liner and at the end of the song take the children as hostage too and demand a ransom from the parents of the kids. This and other tortures that Jeevan and Ranjeet subject him to causes Bishan to lose his mental balance. Then the movie proceeds towards the climax where Kishan (Amitabh Bachchan) comes to rescue Bishan and all the kids.
The movie released was about a year or so after Mohd. Rafi’s death in 1980 (release date October 23rd. 1981). It had music by Rajesh Roshan and lyrics by Anjaan. Amidst all the popular songs that were sung by Kishore Kumar for Amitabh was this song which was Rafi for Amjad Khan. Isn’t that a rarity?
It is not a coincidence that I chose a song featuring Amjad Khan- it was his 26th death anniversary three days back. An actor who sent shivers down our spine as Gabbar Singh but also did a lot of positive characters. He was an all-rounder- in a career spanning 19 years he made us experience the full range of emotions. He went very early.
Thinking of the smooth voiced singer Mohd. Rafi on his 38th death anniversary. Thinking of all the gems he has left behind for us, gems that we are still discovering.
“dil ka soona saaz taraana dhoondega
Teer-e-nigaah-e-naaz nishaana dhoondega
Mujhko mere baad zamaana dhoondega”
This song was posted by Atulji on this date exactly 10 years ago. It is true about both Rafisaab and Amjad Khan. We are still missing them and will always remember them fondly.
