‘Rachna’ (1983) was produced by Girdhar Bhatia and Pravin Paul and was directed by Satish who also wrote story and screenplay. The cast included Anil Kapoor and Beena in lead roles supported by Deepak Shankar (debutant), Pravin Paul, Nazir Hussain, Shivraj, Birbal, Lalita Kumari, Indira Bansal, Tabassum, Gufi Paintal, Savita Bajaj with the friendly appearances of Iftekhar, Chandrashekhar, Shammi, Asit Sen, Keshto Mukherjee and Jagdeep. It was Anil Kapoor’s first released film in a lead role though he had signed first for a lead role in ‘Kahan Kahan Se Guzar Gaya’ (1986) which had a delayed release. This was the only lead role Beena had performed in her entire Hindi film career. Incidentally, in ‘Lovers’ (1983) which was released in the same year, Beena had played the role of the mother to Kumar Gaurav.
The film was released on March 10, 1983, but was a disaster at the box office. The film did not complete even one week in theatres. After working in a few films in supportive roles, Anil Kapoor was desperate to get a lead role for which he accepted it without giving a thought on its script and the weak storyline that too with a debutant director. It is said that Anil Kapoor did not reveal about his role in this film to his producers for fear of losing his prospective lead roles which were subsequently offered to him.
The story of the film is as under:
The film opens with Seth Bhagwandas’s 13th day death ceremony being performed by his only son and the successor, Ravi (Anil Kapoor) who is selfish, arrogant, spendthrift and is in love with a dancing girl, Maya. A lawyer (Shivraj) opens Seth Bhagwandas’s Will and read the provisions of the Will which stipulates that Raj must get married within a month to any other girl but Maya (Jazebel). The girl he marries will equally share all the rights in in his business and the wealth. Failing this, all the property and wealth is to be donated to an Ashram. Ravi’s Governess (Pravin Paul) is after him to select a girl for his marriage within the stipulated time so that his father’s wealth does not go to the Ashram.
Raj meets his friends and asks them to find a solution so that he can marry Maya and at the same time he retains his father’s property. Maya’s interest in marrying Raj is mainly focused on his wealth and the property which his father has left for him. Raj’s friends suggests him to get married to a girl with terminal illness. They find for Raj such a girl, Rachna (Beena) in an orphanage. The doctor has diagnosed that she has cancer. Tulsi (Deepak Shankar) who regularly visits the orphanage as a supplier of essential things for the orphanage secretly loves Rachna which he has not expressed to her.
Raj and his friends visit the orphanage in the guise of donating the amount. They meet the Warden (Lalita Kumari) and hand over the donation to her. They express their desire to see their orphanage during which she introduces Rachana to Raj who is suffering from cancer. Raj feigns extreme remorse and meets her regularly during which he offers to marry her so that she spends good time during whatever time left in her life. Rachna flatly refuses to marry as she does not want Raj to suffer because of her. However, his friends induce her to marry Raj by pressuring her that he is an extremely emotional man. Their marriage take place.
On the marriage night itself, Rachna faints. In the morning, the family doctor (Iftekhar) takes her blood sample and in his next visit, he declares that she has only few days to live. Ravi sheds crocodile tears and requests the doctor to some how save her life though internally, he is very happy that the purpose for which he has married her is becoming reality. He waits for her death. On the other side, Ravi regularly meets Maya and her mother and assures them that Rachna has only few days to live.
Surprisingly, Rachna recovers from her illness and over a period of time even defies her impending death by cancer. Ravi feels desperate and even thinks of killing her by giving poison or taking her on a trip at a hill station to push her from the top of a hill to death. But these are only his imaginations which he is afraid to imp[ement. One day, Ravi’s leg gets injured while imagining kicking Rachna and instead ends in kicking his balcony railing. Rachna tends him during his recuperation making him somewhat soft toward Rachna. But pressure from Maya once again reminds him of his assurance to Maya to marry her.
One day, while Rachna is on a visit to her orphanage to meet the Warden, Ravi along with his lawyer gives his notice of divorce to her. She is shocked. Warden advises her to stay in the orphanage for few days but Rachna declines and leaves Ravi’s house without disclosing her where abouts. For the first time, Raj feels alone in the house and misses Rachna. He searches for her whereabouts but he has failed so far.
In pursuit of searching for Rachna, he visits Tulsi’s house where he finds sketch painting of Rachna. Thinking that Tulsi is in love with her, Ravi assaults Tulsi as to how dare he loves his wife. But Tulsi knowing that he is the husband of Rachna treats him like his guest and does not retort. In an angry mood, Ravi leaves his house and Tulsi follows him to explain the truth. But on the road, Tulsi sees a speeding truck that is about to hit Ravi when Tulsi pushes Ravi and in that he is hit by the truck, seriously injuring him. Ravi is also injured but he is tended in his house while Tulsi is hospitalised.
A police inspector (Chandrashekhar) reaches Ravi’s house to take his statement and informs him that Tulsi has succumbed to his injuries. In his dying statement, Tulsi has mentioned that Rachna did not know that he was in love with her. After her separation from Ravi, he was planning to get married to her but this too he had not told Rachna. This time, Ravi is really feeling bad about Tulsi. His friends bring a good news to him that Rachna is back in the orphanage. Ravi visits her but out of shame, he does not start conversation with her. Rachna signs and hands over the divorce paper with the marriage ring signifying that she has no desire to join him. Ravi returns home and calls his lawyer to prepare a document. Nobody knows as to what the document is about.
There is a function organised in which a new Ashram is being inaugurated by Tulsi’s father. The inmates of orphanage are also invited at the function and Rachna also attends. The name of the Ashram is Tulsi Ashram in memory of Tulsi. It transpires that Ravi has transfer all his wealth and property in the name of Tulsi Ashram. Rachna is overwhelmed by Ravi’s action. After the inaugural function, she runs toward Ravi and hugs him. He puts the marriage ring back in Rachna’s finger.
The film had four songs written by K L Pardesi which were set to music by C K Chauhan who makes a debut on the Blog. This is the only film for which he was the music director. C K Chauhan has been known for his compositions of non-film songs. Incidentally, Jagjit Singh recorded his first ever two non-film ghazals under the music direction of C K Chauhan in 1966.
I present the first song, ‘maahee re maahee re chain na aaye re’ from the film which is rendered by Suman Kalyanpur. It is a background song covering the scenes from Beena’s pre-wedding up to the completion of her wedding ceremony with Anil Kapoor. The undercurrent of the song is one of uncertainty in her married life as she is not sure as to why Anil Kapoor has proposed to marry a terminally ill person. However, in the midst of uncertainty, she is optimistic that both of them will fall in love with each other.

Namaste!
I have been a lurker here for a while and am commenting for the first time! Before I proceed, I wish to thank the creator of this website and also the contributors! A wonderful initiative and a great source of information indeed!
Re this post, I watched the movie on YouTube after reading your review and observed that in the opening credits, under the list of Assistants, the legendary Enoch Daniels’ surname has been misspelt as ‘Denials’!!

Thanks for your words of encouragement.
Misspelling of names often leads to hilarious situations. In some cases, actors themselves adopt hilarious screen names. For instance, I recall there was one Hollywood actor called Red Buttons.
