Mukesh and his Composers – 45
Uncle Manohar Lal Sonik and nephew Om Prakash Sonik formed a composer-duo with the name Sonik-Omi and left behind some of the most memorable songs in HFM. However, in spite of their debut film Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966) creating musical history and many other subsequent songs in other films becoming popular, their name and fame never reached the heights it ought to have.
Ishwar Bhakti (with Giridhar) (1951) and Mamta with Hansraj Behl (1952) were probably the two films wherein Sonik composed music without Omi.
Sonik experimented with singing and assisting other composers and later when Omi joined films, he too assisted other composers for some time.
Dil Hi Tho Hai (1963) under Roshan is probably the first film where they are credited as Assistant Music Directors as Sonik-Omi. In this film, B. L Rawal must have got to know the skills of the duo and in 1966 independently allotted them Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966).
The songs of this film were popular all over and rest as they say is history.
K C Dey, Master Sonik and Ravindra Jain are the blind music directors that I can remember offhand.
There are a few articles on the blog by more knowledge writers on the career of Sonik-Omi duo, and I request readers to visit them if required.
A couple of them can be found here and here
This post is on Mukesh’s songs for the duo and here is the list with a little twist as Sonik has independently composed one gem of a song by Mukesh.
Further, there are 13 songs composed by the duo for Mukesh, of which two are yet to be posted on the blog.

1 is an excellent solo sung by Mukesh under Sonik alone. I request readers to lend an ear to this great song.
Under the duo, 1 and 2 are from their debut and the traid is a phenomenally famous song. It is a title song and strangely Mukesh does not get to sing the title words in the song. However, his part of the rendition at the end is a class apart. Just listen the heaviness with which he sings the words “Hum” and “Phir”.
Rehman could act without moving a muscle in his body and Mukesh’s voice could pour empathy without entering the tormented soul.
3, I could write a separate post altogether, but let’s leave it for some other day. It was this song and the two solos from Bebus (1950) which made me a Mukesh fan that I am.
Rehman is very much part of this song, but it is lip-synced by Deepak Kumar.
Who is Deepak Kumar?
Well, that’s the point. Mukesh has sung iconic songs for relatively unknown actors too.
Let me see if I can pull something about Deepak Kumar sometime later as there are two unposted songs in the table and one has Deepak Kumar. I shall skip that and take the other duet in this post.
4 and 5 are not so popular songs, but I remember them being part of many a cassette collection.
6 and 7 are also relatively lesser-known songs.
8 is on Deepak Kumar and the song was reminded by our Satyajit ji recently.
I will take it up after a month or two.
9 is a post by self and I had taken it up as part of Atul ji’s 10K Song Milestone Celebrations in 2017. We all should be proud and happy that this musical bandwagon is going strong. And we will very soon see 20k celebrations. I think we can all start planning for this grand occasion as it is expected in early March 26.
11 is one of its kind in the sense that it is the only triad sung by Mukesh, Rafi and Manna Dey.
12 is a well-known song with Asha Bhosale. This name will feature in a big way in my next post and for a special reason. 😊
13 is a romantic song with Lata Mangeshkar with the lovers on screen exchanging vows to remain together Janam Janam.
I take 10 (Bo😊), for this post so that I can take up 8 later. I hope and thank Satyajit ji for bearing with me.
Only one song from this film has been covered on the blog, incidentally by self only.
This duet with Asha Bhosale is the second song from the film to be featured on the blog.
I don’t think the film or the video of the duet is readily available. But luckily for us, wiki page on the film exists. It can be read here to know the cast and crew of the film.
IMO, it is not a great song by Mukesh standards. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the video of the song could not be traced by self.
I hope Prakash ji can pull off the video. Meanwhile, readers can hear the audio and pen down their views. 😊
