Agar tu aabroo apni bachaa leti to achcha thhaa

Posted on: July 9, 2012

Today (9 july) seems to be a day of anniversaries. Manoharlal Sonik, better known as Sonik of Sonik Omi duo had left for his heavenly abode today.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Ladki Pasand Hai” (1971).

This song is a piano song. It is sung by Mukesh. It is picturised on Deepak Kumar and Mumtaz.

G S Rawal is the lyricist.

The lyrics sound quite regressive in the sense that it takes Mumtaz to task for not trying to save her “honour”. I have not seen the movie , but I will not be surprised if it turns out that Mumtaz singing and dancing in public may have been equated to losing her “honour” in this song.

I have not seen the movie so I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Song-Agar tu aabroo apni bacha leti to achcha thaa (Ladki Pasand Hai)(1971) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-G S Rawal, MD-Sonik Omi

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

wafa ke naam per mitna
nahi aayaa agar tujhko
toh phir jins e wafa baazaar mein kyun bechti hai tuh
agar tuh aabroo apni
bacha leti toh achcha thaa
agar tuh aabroo apni
bacha leti toh achcha thaa
joh apani aag mein khud ko
jala leti toh achchaa thaa
agar tuh aabroo apni

lagaa kar aag hothon se
kisi ka ghar jala dena
lagaa kar aag hothon se
kisi ka ghar jala dena
kisi ki jaan jaana
aur tera muskura dena
ki tera muskura dena
kisi per jaan dekar
muskura leti toh achhaa thaa
agar tuh aabroo apni
bacha leti toh achha thaa
joh apni aag mein
khud ko jala leti toh achchaa thaa
agar tuh aabru apni

sati joh aan per hoti hai
tuh unki nishaani hai
sati joh aan per hoti hai
tuh unki nishaani hai
na hargiz bhool begairat
ke tuh Hindostaani hai
ki tuh Hindostaani hai
agar tuh sharm ko zevar
bana leti toh achhaa thaa
agar tuh aabroo apni
bacha leti toh achcha thaa
joh apni aag mein khud ko jala leti toh achhaa thaa
agar tuh aabroo apni

Atul ji,
The answer to your doubt/qerry is very simple in a bollywood movie.
Rajani and Rekha(Mumtaz in double role) are twin sisters, grown up at different families.Rajani,in love with Suraj(Deepak kumar),is a sanskari girl, whereas Rekha,ALSO in love with Suraj,is from a Tawaif’s bringing up.Deepak has seen Rekha dancing in a Mujra, but thinks that she is Rajani and therefore admonishes her in this song.

This must be the same Deepak Kumar who lip synced for Sonik Omi songs of 1968 Aabroo(Ashok Kumar,Vimmi,Rehman starrer)
1)Rafi:Har chehraa yahaan chaand tho,har zarra sitaaraa…ye waadi ye kashmir tho jannat ka nazaaraa
2)Rafi:Aap se pyaar huaa, aap khaffa ho baitte
3)Mukesh:Jinhein hum bhoolna chaahe

Nitin ji, Atul ji,

One correction to the lyrics. The second line of the very first she’r,

toh phir jinse wafa baazaar mein kyun bechti hai tuh

should read as

toh phir jins e wafa baazaar mein kyun bechti hai tuh

Here the urdu word ‘jins’ means objects or things or articles. The meaning of this line is
‘. . . so then why do you sell the things of love and trust in the marketplace’.
The obvious reference is towards this lady’s profession (as explained by Arun ji’s comment above).

Please make the correction.

Thanks for pointing it out. Indeed one needs to be aware of the context to guess that this is the word that the lyricist had penned. Now the line makes sense.

Prakash ji, Atul ji,

As the hero performs on screen, somehow the expressions on his face do not match the words and the emotions these words are carrying. There is displeasure, there is remonstration, almost akin to scolding the other person. But the facial features throughout the song seem as if he is going to break into a smile in just a second.

No wonder this gentleman did not last long in the industry.
