‘Chhupa Rustam’ (1965) was an obscure film, produced by H S Khanna and was directed by Akkoo. The cast included Chitra, Azaad, Habib, Indira Bansal, Majnu, Maqbool, Sheikh, Arvind Kumar, Aruna, Khursheed, Uma Khosla etc.

The film’s lead actors, Chitra and Azaad have been the popular pair in ‘B” and ‘C’ grade films in the genre of action/stunt as well as fantasy/adventure during 1950s and 1960s. They worked together as lead actors in as many as 13 films some of which were ‘Zimbo’ and ‘Tarzan’ series films.

Chitra was born as Afsar Unissa Begum (17/05/1937 – 11/01/2006) in Hyderabad. As revealed by her in a TV interview, she used to watch Hindi films which led to her interest in a career in Hindi films. Once on her holiday with her family in Bombay (Mumbai), she met director, Kamal Amrohi, for a film role when she was not even a teenager. He advised her to wait for 3-4 years to get the proper role in films. Producer-director, P. N. Arora was looking for a new girl for his upcoming production. He wanted a teenage girl who would look innocent but bubbly at the same time. Chitra fitted the role perfectly and got her first break as a second lead actress with Shammi Kapoor in ‘Chor Bazaar’ (1954). She was most active as a lead actress in many stunt/action films during 1950s and 1960s. She mostly got sides roles in social and family-oriented films during this period. In the 1970s, she mostly got side roles and that too sporadically. By the end of 1970s, she almost vanished from the film industry. Chitra worked in around 90 films, mostly during 1950s and 1960s. Besides Azaad, the actors with whom she was paired most in action/stunt/costume/adventure genre of films included Daljeet, Ranjan, Mahipal, Manhar Desai and Jairaj.

Azaad Irani was born on November 11, 1938 in a Parsi family in Mumbai. It is not known as to how he landed in Hindi film industry. Probably with a well-built body, producers may have seen his potentiality for action/stunt films in the same way as Homi Wadia had seen in Fearless Nadia for such genre of films in 1930s. Coincidentally, it was in Homi Wadia’s film, ‘Zimbo’ (1958) that Azaad made debut as a lead actor with Chitra. Due to his limited knowledge of Hindi, he was given very few dialogues during his early acting career.

One of the main features of Azaad’s filmy career is that he played lead roles in maximum Hindi Tarzan-style movies – ‘Zimbo’ (1958), ‘Zimbo Comes to Town’ (1960), ‘Toofani Tarzan’ (1962), ‘Tarzan Aur Jadugar’ (1963), ‘Tarzan And The Gorilla’ (1963), ‘Tarzan and Jalpari’ (1964), ‘Tarzan and Delilah’ (1964), ‘Tarzan and Captain Kishore’ (1964), ‘Tarzan And Circus’ (1965), ‘Tarzan Kee Mehbooba’ (1966), ‘Zimbo Finds A Son’ (1966), ‘Tarzan and the Magical Lamp’ (1966)’, ‘Tarzan in Fairyland’ (1968) and ’Tarzan 303’ (1970).

With the emergence of Dara Singh as the action/stunt lead actor, Azaad was relegated to doing supporting roles in such genre of films. Later, he did supporting roles in top banners’ films like ’Dharam Veer’ (1977). ‘Kasme Vaade’ (1978), ‘Don’ (1978), ‘Suhaag’ (1979), ‘Naseeb’ (1981), ‘Yaaraana’ (1981), ‘Namak Halaal’ (1982), ‘Sitamgar’ (1985) etc.

Azaad’s filmy career spanned over three decades (1958-1990) during which he acted in about 140 films. Sometime in 2000, Azaad migrated to Mayland, USA where he stays with his wife and a son, Melvin Irani. In 2001, Azaad was diagnosed with Parkinson disease. I have seen one of his photos taken some time in 2016 in his house in the USA.

Coming back to the film, ‘Chhupa Rustam’ (1965), unfortunately the VCD of the film is not available on any video sharing platform. Surprisingly, video clips of four songs are available. So, it is quite possible that the film is available privately, probably in VHS format. A snippet of the film starting from credit title is available which is of the duration of only about 8 minutes giving me some idea about the story of the film which is as under:

The film starts with a man finding an infant boy left at the shore of a river. He brings the infant to his house and tends the infant boy along with their son, Mewalal. They grow up together and are trained in sword fighting. In due course, the infant boy becomes adult as Shyam (Azaad) who has become an expert sword fighter.

In the palace, the Queen (Chitra) gets complaints from the citizens that there are cases of looting in their village putting them in great difficulties. She calls her Pradhan, Pratap (Sheikh) and asks him if he cannot stop lootings than she will have to appoint a new Senapati who can effectively tackle the menace of dacoity. Pratap reminds the Queen that as per the Will of her father, the late King, the Queen cannot interfere in the day-to-day affairs of the kingdom until she complete 18 years of age. Also, only that person can become the Senapati of the kingdom who successfully fight. Against a man-eater tiger. Queen retorts Pratap by saying why not he himself fight with the man-eater tiger and sarcastically adds that he should take care of his life. Pratap feels insulted.

But Pratap has other idea which is more than becoming Senapati. He wants to become the king by displacing the Queen. He takes the help of Samri (Maqbool) who only wants from Pratap periodic supply of gold and jewelries to help him. For that reason, Pratap’s men starts grabbing gold and jewelries from the villagers in the pretext of not paying taxes to the kingdom. They also do the same thing when a wedding ceremony was going on in the village when looting takes place. However, Shyam fights with the intruders but fails. He takes a vow that he will fight for the villagers against the atrocity of Pratap by becoming a Chhupa Rustam (unidentifiable person). With this, the 8-minute snippet of the film ends.

During the last couple of years, I have watched many films of action/stunts films of the 1960s. Such films have almost similar pattern of the progress of the story through the last. In the end, the protagonist restores the kingdom to the legitimate prince/princess after overcoming all the obstacles usually created by Vazir/Senapati. I am sure that in this film, Pratap would kidnap the Queen and Shyam will rescue her from Pratap’s captivity. Finally, one would expect Shyam to get rid of Pratap and restores the kingdom to the Queen.

The film had six songs but names of lyricist has not been indicated against any song. The songs were set to music by Bulo C Rani. An interesting feature of the available four songs are that the musical compositions style of O P Nayyar has been adapted in toto. Surely, Bulo C Rani must have been instructed as such. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘chham chham chham o naache meraa jee’ which is rendered by Suman Kalyanpur and picturised on Chitra inside a palace. The lyrics of the song suggest that she has been pouring her feelings probably in anticipation of meeting Azaad.

This is a fantastic song which I became aware of very recently. In fact, all the available four songs of this film are of top-notch quality.
