Hrishikesh Mukherjee has been known to make family-oriented films with intricate human relationship issues presented through light comedy. ‘Anand’ (1970), Baawarchi’ (1972), ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1975), ‘Gol Maal’ (1979), ‘Khubsoorat’ (1980), ‘Naram Garam’ (1981) and ‘Rang Birangi’ (1983) are some of his well-known films in this genre. There is another of his film, ‘Kisee Se Na Kehnaa’ (1983) which is making a debut on the Blog after about 18 years since the Blog started. This is a lesser-known film of Hrishikesh Mukherjee. I had heard the name of the film but was not aware that it was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee until a couple of days back.

‘Kisee Se Na Kehnaa’ (1983) was produced by Jaywant Pathare and Ashok Rawat and was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The cast included Farooque Sheikh and Deepti Naval in lead roles supported by Utpal Dutt, Saeed Jafferi, S N Bannerjee, Deven Verma, Lalita Kumari, Asha Sharma, Ketki Dave, Kanu Roy etc. Prema Narayan and Yunus Parvez made the guest appearances in the film. The film belongs to light comedy genre.

The film’s producers Jaywant Pathare and Ashok Rawat were the long time associates of Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Jaywant Pathare was the cinematographer for films produced/directed by Hrishkesh Mukherjee while Ashok Rawat was his assistant director for films like ‘Aalaap’ (1977), ‘Golmaal’ (1979) and ‘Jurmaana’ (1979).

The story of the film is as under:

Kailashpati (Utpal Dutt), a widower, lives with his only son, Ramesh (Farooque Sheikh) who works in a company as a manager. Because of his honesty and hardwork, his boss (S N Bannerjee) has promoted him as the General Manager. Ramesh’s father is now searching for a bride for him with a condition that the bride should not know English as he feels that the English-educated girls in India has adopted the westernised culture. He has already rejected a couple of girls for their westernised thought process. He feels that though these girls have been born in India, their souls lie in England.

In the meanwhile, unaware of his father’s condition for his would-be wife, Ramesh has fallen in love with a doctor girl, Ramola (Deepti Naval) who happens to be the niece of his boss in the Company. But he is not sure whether she reciprocates his love. So, he consults his father’s friend, Lalaji (Saeed Jafferi) who guides him how to judge whether the girl he loves is also in love with him . It so happens that Ramola is also going through the same condition. Ramesh goes to meet Ramola when he finds her in a garden singing a song giving him some positive hints. They are now in love with each other and waiting to get married.

After rejecting two girls as a potential brides, Kailashpati tells Ramesh that he is looking for a bride for him and his only condition is that she should be well-versed in Indian culture, read the Ramayan and Mahabharat and she should be illiterate in English. If he wants to marry a modern and English-speaking girl, he is free to marry her but he would leave the house. This condition for his bride puts Ramesh in a piquant situation as he is in love with Dr. Ramola (Deepti Naval). Ramesh meets Lala ji who devises a plan taking into the confidence Ramola and her maternal uncle who is also he boss of Ramesh. Ramola is now converted in to a village girl called Rama and her uncle has become Chaturvedi. Lala ji also gives Ramola some likely questions on Ramayan and Mahabharat for which he provides answers to her to memorise them.

Lala ji visits Kailashpati’s house at a time when he is planning to give an advertisement in Hindi newspapers looking for the bride for Ramesh. Lala ji tells him that there is no need to give an advertisement as he is aware of a village girl meeting his conditions. Kailashpati is excited about this information and they at once visit the make-shift house in a village to meet Ramola (now Rama) and her uncle (now Chatervedi). There are some hilarious situations during their meetings but Lala ji handles the situations well. Kailashpati approves of Rama as his daughter-in-law. Ramesh and Ramola (Rama) are married.

After the marriage, there are further hilarious situations between Kailashpati and Ramola but things are kept under control again with the help of Lala ji. Over time, Ramola feels guilty especially when her father-in-law treats her as his own daughter. She has done this drama against her conscious only because she loves Ramesh. At one time she tells Ramesh that she is stressed as she cannot live a life based on the concealment of the truth. She is keen to reveal to her father-in-law the truth. However, Ramesh prevents her from revealing anything for the sake of keeping the peaceful environment in the family.

Out of curiosity, one day Ramola asks her father-in-law as to why he is dead against English educated girls. He clarifies that he is not against leaning any languages and he considers all languages of the world as divine. In fact, he is a post-graduate in English literature. His objection is that most of the English educated girls in India discard their own languages, the Indian culture and adopts western culture. This gives Ramola a clue how to handle the situation whenever the truth about her education and the status comes out.

Once again, Ramesh goes to Lala ji for some solution as Ramola feels suffocated to conceal the truth to her godly father-in-law. Lala ji suggests him to take the transfer to Poone. He does that but some more hilarious situations develops when Ramesh’s father lands in their house in Poone. when Ramola’s uncle is already in their house on a visit. Somehow Ramesh manages the situation. But how long the truth can be concealed? One day, Kailashpati falls ill and doctor advises him to take a complete bed rest.

One night, Kailashpati gets an heart-attack and there is no doctor around. Ramola decides that her role as a doctor in her at this juncture is more important than a cudltured daughter-in-law. Ramola injects a life-saving drug in the vein of her father-in-law and reveals the truth that she is a qualified doctor. Kailashpati is shocked that Ramola has concealed the truth from him. He refuses to take any medicines from her. It is once again Lala ji who gives him a long sermon on English educated girls verses Indian culture. He points out that if she had not given him the life saving injection, he would have been dead by now. The film ends with Kailashnath realising that despite Ramola being English educated girl, she has proved to be an ideal daughter-in-law totally emersed in Indian culture while giving unmost respect to the elders.

I have watched the film for the first time only two days back. It is a typical Hrishikesh Mukherjee film which picks up a social issue presented with the light comical touch. Though the film is entertaining, it is not in the class of films like ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1975), ‘Gol Maal’ (1978) and ‘Naram Garam’ (1981).

The film had five songs written by Yogesh Gaud which were set to music by Bappi Lahiri. I present the first song, ‘phoolon tumhen pata hai…..kisee se na kehnaa’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle for Deepti Naval who is singing the song in a garden. Farooque Sheikh is seen in the song picturisation who prefers to watch her from a distance. The audio clip of the song has an additional antara. The tune of he song gives me a feel of Rabindra Sangeet.

The context of the song is that Ramesh (Farooque Sheikh) has fallen in love with Dr. Ramola (Deepti Naval) but he is not sure whether she reciprocates his love. So, on the advice of Lala ji (Saeed Jafferi), he visits her house to meet her and get some hints whether she also loves him. However, he finds Ramola singing a song in her garden which gives him some clues that she also loves him. After the end of the song, he meets her and things become clear that they are in love with each other.
