“Chanda Aur Bijli”(1966) was produced and directed by AtmaRam for Guru Dutt Films combines. This movie had Sanjeev Kumar, Padmini, Sachin Pilgaonkar aka Master Sachin, Jeevan, Kesto Mukherjee, Bela Bose, Ulhas, Pratima Devi, Bipin Gupta, Akashdeep, Mohan Choti, Jankidas, Jerry, Dev Kishan, Mahavir, Junior Mehmood, Muniraj, Pardesi, Radheshyam, Zebunnissa, Randhir, Johnny, Farooque, Kuddoos, Abubakkar, Jayashree etc in it.

Nabendu Ghosh adapted the novel “Oliver Twist” for Hindi movie audiences and wrote the screenplay of this movie.

The story of the movie was given by Satyajit Rajurkar jee while he discussed the previous song from the movie. Here is the story of the movie as given by him :-

A destitute, pregnant woman delivers a boy during a stormy night in a village hut and dies shortly thereafter. The midwife conceals the mother’s ornaments and a locket (proof of the boy’s royal heritage) before handing the body to an orphanage.

The boy, named Chandu (Chanda), grows up in the orphanage where the manager and his accomplice mistreat the children. However, Chanda’s innate nobility compels him to stand up for them.

On her deathbed, the midwife confesses to the orphanage manager and provides the proof of Chanda’s birth to atone for her guilt—but the manager conspires with the family’s adopted heir to eliminate Chanda.

Chanda flees and, by chance, joins a gang of petty thieves in Bombay. He meets and befriends Bijli, who shields him from the guild’s dangerous leader, Ustad Bhagatram.

As Chanda struggles to adapt to life in the gang, Bijli— who is romantically linked with Sheroo (Sanjeev Kumar)— grows protective of him. In the film’s emotional arcs, Sheroo and Bijli fall in love amidst haunting backdrops like graveyards and deserted railway carriages.

During a robbery attempt at what turns out to be his own ancestral home, Chanda finally reconnects with his real grandparents. The story resolves with Chanda not only reclaiming his rightful place but also inspiring a moral transformation in the gang members.

“Chanda Aur Bijli”(1966) had six songs in it. Five songs have already been covered in the past. Here are the details of the songs that have been covered in the blog so far :-

There were as many as three lyricists in the movie who shared the six songs equally. All songs of Indeewar and Hasrat Jaipuri have been covered. One song of Neeraj is covered. So this final song is penned by Neeraj.

Songs of the movie were sung by Rafi (one duet song), Manna Dey (one solo song), Sharda (one solo song) and Asha Bhonsle (one duet with Rafi and three solo songs). This final song is a solo song sung by Asha Bhonsle.

Actors of all the previous songs are identified except the song sung by Manna Dey and picturised as a beggar song. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify that actor.

This sixth and final song is lip synced by Padmini as a roadside dance song. She dances to distract the bystanders who have gathered o watch her performance while her underage accomplices such as Junior Mehmood etc pick the pockets of the unsuspecting bystanders.

Shankar Jaikishan is the lyricist. This was perhaps the first movie of Shankar Jaikishan where Shailendra was missing as he had died in 1966. In his place, Shankar Jaikishan used the services of Indeewar and Neeraj for the first time.

With this song, all the songs of “Chanda Aur Bijli”(1969) get covered in the blog. The movie thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.
