We now move on to the next actress whose name begins with an “A” and who has lip-synced to a song by Asha Bhosle. Today, we feature Anjala Zaveri.

Anjala Zaveri was launched in a big way through Vinod Khanna’s film Himalay Putra (1997). Since Akshaye Khanna was to be introduced in this film, a nationwide search campaign was conducted to find a suitable heroine for him. A similar kind of large-scale build-up had earlier been seen with Henna (1990), which benefited from it and became successful.

Anjala Zaveri was born in the UK into a Gujarati-speaking family. However, since Himalay Putra was not a major success, her acting career stalled before it could properly take off. The success that eluded her in the Bombay film industry was partially compensated by her work in the Telugu and Tamil film industries, where she remained active for the next eight years or so. In total, she appeared in 23 films: 7 in Hindi, 11 in Telugu, 3 in Tamil, and 1 each in Kannada and Malayalam.

In Soch (2002), she made a guest appearance in the song “Dil Dhoonde Hai Yahaan.” The film, a crime thriller, is based on Strangers on a Train (1951). I have not seen Soch, so I cannot say how closely it follows the original. Being a Hindi film, it unsurprisingly includes several songs. Wikipedia notes that there are five in Soch (2002).

In the song featured today, the character played by Arbaaz Khan attempts to murder the character played by Raveena Tandon. From what we see, her character appears to be both film director and a choreographer.

As is often the case in films, the depiction of song shoots within movies is rarely realistic. Examples that come to mind include “Main Albeli” from Zubeidaa (2001) and “Tumhaare Bin Jee Na Lage” from Bhumika (1977). Interestingly, both films were directed by Shyam Benegal and feature a film actress as the central character. More such examples can be found on this blog under the category “film-shooting songs.”

It is interesting to observe that in such sequences, a song is often shown as being filmed in a single continuous take. Although we know that shooting a song can sometimes take even a month or at the very least a full day, we still accept this depiction at face value. Hindi film audiences are used to overlooking such inconsistencies, such as sudden changes in location, for example from Kashmir to Kanyakumari or from Goa to Germany, within a single song. And that is without even touching upon the trope of one person receiving blood transfusions simultaneously from three donors.

The song “Dil Dhoonde Hai Yahaan” is sung by Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, and Asha Bhosle. The music is composed by Jatin–Lalit. Sanjay Kapoor and Anjala Zaveri lip-sync to the song, while Raveena Tandon appears as the director of the shoot and Arbaaz Khan lurks in the shadows, waiting patiently until the end of the song with his attempt at murder.

With this song, Soch (2002) makes its debut on this blog, as does Anjala Zaveri.

Lyrics (Based on Audio link):

dil dhoondhe hai idhar
koi de khabar yaar kee
le jaaye na ye raah
dhundh mein kaheen pyaar kee
ho kaanon mein
ye sadaa
keh gayee
kyaa kuchh sunaa
mujhko naa
hai khabar
tujhko jo
kuchh hai pataa sanam
bataa

kaheen ujaalaa
kaheen andheraa
aaj yahaan kuchh honaa hai
dhuaan dhuaan
is tanhaayee mein
paanaa hai
kuchh khonaa hai
kaatil hain nazrein
bach ke rahnaa

dil dhoondhe hai idhar
koi de khabar yaar kee

le jaaye na ye raah
dhundh mein kaheen
pyaar kee

koi yahaan hai
khayaalon mein
kisee ke armaan javaan aan

koi uljhaa
sawaalon mein
koi to hai badgumaan
kyaa huaa hai
na jaane
aankhon mein chhaa rahaa
nashaa

kaheen ujaalaa
kaheen andheraa
aaj yahaan kuchh honaa hai
dhuaan dhuaan
is tanhaayee mein
paanaa hai
kuchh khonaa hai

kaatil hain nazrein
bach ke rahnaa

dil dhoondhe hai idhar koi de khabar yaar kee le jaaye na ye raah
dhundh mein kaheen
pyaar kee

poochho na ye aag kaisee hai
sharaaron se tan jaley ae ae

pyaas thodee bujhaane de
lagaa le aake galey
haan dard badhtaa hee jaaye
saanson mein kyaa
zahar
ghulaa

kaheen ujaalaa
kaheen andheraa
aaj yahaan kuchh honaa hai
dhuaan dhuaan
is tanhaayee mein
paanaa hai kuchh khonaa hai

kaatil hain nazrein
bach ke rehnaa

dil dhoondhe hai idhar
koi de khabar yaar kee
le jaaye na ye raah
dhundh mein kaheen
pyaar kee
ho kaanon mein
ye sadaa
keh gayee
kyaa kuchh sunaa
mujhko naa
hai khabar
tujhko jo
kuchh hai pataa
sanam
bataa

kaheen ujaalaa
kaheen andheraa
aaj yahaan kuchh honaa hai
dhuaan dhuaan
is tanhaayee mein
paanaa hai
kuchh khonaa hai

kaatil hain nazrein
bach ke rahnaa
bach ke ae ae ae ae
aa, aa…

kaheen ujaalaa
kaheen andheraa
aaj yahaan kuchh honaa hai
dhuaan dhuaan
is tanhaayee mein
paanaa hai
kuchh khonaa hai
kaheen ujaalaa
kaheen andheraa
aaj yahaan kuchh honaa hai
dhuaan dhuaan
is tanhaayee mein
paanaa hai
kuchh khonaa hai
