#The Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #

In this post I am presenting a song from the 1970 movie ‘Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’.

“Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi-1970” was produced for ‘Vasu Films’, Madras, by Vasu Menon. It was directed by V. Madhusudana Rao. It had Sanjay Khan, Leena Chandavarkar, Jagdeep, Anupama, Manmohan Krishna, Sundar, N. S. Bedi, Sharma, Pratima Devi, Bilkis, Shamim, Lalita Pawar, Shashikala, Om Prakash, Madhumati, Jayshree T. As per information available the story of this movie was written by Barampuram Kollady. Its’ dialogues were written by Rajinder Krishan who also penned down the lyrics for the seven songs in this movie. Music of this film was composed by R.D. Burman. The playback singers for this movie are Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Mohd Rafi, and Usha Mangeshkar. I guess that this movie was not a successful movie of its time and hence its’ songs remain as lesser-known songs and they were also forgotten easily.

Here is the summary of his movie as mentioned on IMDB. (I have added the names of the artistes to this summary according to the characters played by them which is mentioned on IMDB as well as on Wikipedia).

Pretty Sadhana (Leena Chandavarkar), the daughter of Rangpur-based widow, Bhagmati (Lalita Pawar), falls in love, and gets married to Haripur-based Deepak Chaudhary (Sanjay Khan), who lives with his dad, Motilal (Om Prakash); and mom, Maya (Shashikala). It is here she will find that her mom expects her to abuse Maya and drive her out; while Bhagmati herself abuses her very own daughter-in-law, Lajwanti (Anupama), for not bringing any dowry, and prevents her submissive son, Kanhaiya (Jagdeep), from being intimate with her. Sadhana will also find out why Motilal and Maya do not converse with each other directly, and why the former keeps a photo-less frame in the main living room of their mansion.

In this song, Lajwanti (Anupama)playing the traditional long suffering bahu is seen singing this devotional song in front of the idol of Lord Krishn, which is the recommended Hindi movie way of an ‘Aadarsh Bhartiya Naaree’ to cope with the harassment seffered at the hands of her cruel mother in law. Performing pooja of ‘Tulsi’ and looking at the framed ‘black & white’ photograph of her husband Kanhaiyya (Jagdeep). It is no coincidence that this bhajan addresses Lord Krishn as well as her husband, seing that Shyam, Ghanshyam and Kanhaiyya (name of her husband) are all synonyms of Lord Krishna.

Five songs from this movie ‘Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi-1970’ have already been posted earlier. Today’s song is the sixth and penultimate song from this movie to appear here.

Let us listen to this devotional song now…
