Moving ahead with the series on Asha Bhosle singing for actresses whose first names begin with the letter “A”, we come to Ayesha Julka.
Ayesha Julka is another actress whose father served in the Armed Forces. She made her acting debut in the Telugu film Neti Siddhartha (1990). She then entered Hindi cinema with Kurbaan (1991), opposite Salman Khan. The film is said to have been a success, but I cannot remember much about it. The first film in which I noticed her, and which I long considered to be her debut, was Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992).
When the film was released, most of the discussion in the press centred on Aamir Khan’s performance and Pooja Bedi’s Marilyn Monroe-inspired appearance. At the time, I was at university, and even among the students the conversation revolved mainly around these two points and the cycle race in the film’s climax. Not many of us, including the author of these lines, knew much about bicycle gears, which led to all sorts of misunderstandings about the race. But at that age, the excitement of the discussion mattered more than its accuracy.
After that, I noticed Ayesha in Khiladi (1992), which was something of a remake of Khel Khel Mein (1975). Then I completely lost track of her. A few years ago, however, I happened to see her again in the trailer of the web series Happy Family: Conditions Apply. When I looked up her Wikipedia page, I discovered that she had not been idle during the intervening years. Besides continuing to appear in Hindi films, she had occasionally worked in Kannada, Bengali, Tamil, and Odia cinema, gradually moving towards character roles from the mid-1990s onwards.
Balmaa (1993) was directed by Lawrence D’Souza, who was riding high on the success of Saajan (1991), starring Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, and Salman Khan. His first film as a director was Nyay Anyay (1990). Before turning director, he had worked as a cinematographer. His second directorial venture, Saajan, became a runaway success. As a result, he had six releases in 1992, four of them as director. The fortunes of these films were mixed, and the following year he had only three releases. Thereafter, the number of his films gradually declined.
The song “Agar Zindagi Ho Tere Sang Ho” is filmed in and around Ooty, a favourite shooting location in those days. The lake seen in the song has appeared in many Hindi film songs of the late 1980s and 1990s. Ayesha Julka and Avinash Wadhawan feature in the song. Interestingly, there are moments when they lip-sync to the lyrics and other moments when the song simply continues in the background while they remain silent. There must be some artistic or creative reason for this approach, although it escapes me. I suppose this kind of declamatory song presentation was popular at the time.
With this song, Balmaa (1993) makes its debut on the blog. Ayesha Julka, however, has already appeared here before.
