‘Sharaafat Chhod Dee Maine’ (1976) was produced by Damodaran Menon, VM Shah and Jagdev Bhambri and was directed by Jagdev Bhambri. The cast included Hema Malini, Feroz Khan, Neetu Singh, Jagdeep, Abhi Bhattacharya, Manmohan Krishna, Helen, Manju, Shera, Baby Madhu Malini, Mulchand, Yasmin, Jugal etc with special appearances of Bindu, Padma Khanna, Jayshree T, Faryal, Dev Kumar, Dheeraj, Tabrez, Jagdev Bhambri, Arpana Chaudhary and Laxmi Chhaya among others. Hema Malini had a double role of two sisters in the film.

The film was presented by Hema Pictures which gives the impression that Hema Malini was indirectly involved in the making of the film. Hema Malini’s niece, Madhoo made her debut in the film as Baby Madhu Malini. One of the highlights of the film was that the prominent dancers of that time, Helen, Padma Khanna, Laxmi Chhaya, Jayshree T. Bindu and Faryal, appeared in the film. Of course, there were dances of Hema Malini and Neetu Singh as well.

As per the trivia mentioned in IMDb, the shootings of the film started sometime in 1972. Both Hema Malini and Feroz Khan were not happy with the way the film was shaping. So, the film was not a priority for them to give dates for shooting. Thus the film was released some time in the second half of 1976. As it often happens, a delayed film has to compromise in the screenplay and the some continuity issues. Also, due to the delay in completing the film, the dramatic change over of appearance of Neetu Singh in the role of Radha is discernible. The film would have failed at the box office but turned to an average box office performance probably due to the star-power of Hema Malini and Feroz Khan.

The story of the film is as under:

Ramprasad (Manmohan Krishna) lives with his two daughters, Preeta (Hema Malini) and the minor daughter Geeta (Baby Madhu Malini) in a village. Preeta is in love with Raju (Feroz Khan), an unemployed youth who is always ready to fight on behalf of the villagers. They meets regularly during which Geeta is also present. Raju plans to marry Preeta and settle down in his domestic bliss. However, Preeta insists that before the marriage, he should find a decent job. For this, Raju goes to a city for a job and tells Preeta that in a few months, he will return and marry her.

Ramprasad has finalised the marriage of Preeta by selecting a bridegroom (Dheeraj) without her knowledge assuming that she will agree with his selection. However, when Ramprasad reveals her about the marriage, she tells him that she has already committed to marry Raju. Ramprasad is shocked. He threatens her that he would commit suicide if she did not marry the boy he has selected as he has also given his words to bridegroom’s parents. Under psychological and emotional pressure, Preeta agrees to marry with the boy selected by her father and the marriage takes place in the village.

Raju is devasted by Preeta’s marriage as he feels that it is a betrayal on her part. He takes a vow that from now onwards, he will discard his decency, honesty and civility. Thereafter, he develops cynical attitude towards all women by treating them a mere object of enjoyment for him. He shifts to Mumbai and comes across Jahangir (Jagdeep) who works for Rai Saheb (Dev Kumar) doing some shady business. Noting his rough and tough personality, Jahangir introduces him to Rai Saheb and suggests him to employ Raju who will works for him like James Bond. Raju gets involved with the illicit business of Rai Saheb and soon becomes his trusted aid.

In the village, Preeta gives birth to a baby girl, Radha and dies. Her husband takes care of both Geeta and the infant Radha and gives them education as per the wishes of Preeta. In Mumbai, Rai Saheb is getting old and he bequeaths his business and wealth to Raju after seeing his performance. After the death of Rai Saheb, Raju takes over as the new Rai Saheb who promotes himself to a lavish lifestyle visiting courtesans as part of his cynicism towards women. One day, while returning from a courtesan’s house, Raju’s car dashes against a scooter driven by Dheeraj and dies. Having already lost her father, Geeta and Radha are on their own.

The story takes a leap forward. Radha is now a college-going girl who is in love with her collegemate, Shyam (Tabrez). Radha’s aunt Geeta (Hema Malini) has also grown up who resembles her elder sister, the late Preeta. She is presently working in a destitute women’s ashram in the city run by Abhi Bhattacharya and she has been transferred in a new Ashram in Pune as Supervisor.

The ashram has organised a fund raising programme for which Raju/Rai Saheb has been invited to attend having given the donation for the ashram. In the programme, Radha performs a dance which reminds Raju of Preeta’s dance which he had witnessed in the village. Because of his past emotional attachment to Preeta, Rai Saheb indicates his willingness to sponsor Radha’s education to the Ashram chief (Abhi Bhattacharya) which Geeta agrees before moving to Pune. Radha shifts to Rai Saheb’s house.

Over a period of time, Raju develops romantic inclination toward Radha as he sees in her his Preeta. He showers on her costly dresses and gifts and buy an exclusive car for her. After completion of her education, he intends to marry Radha without being aware of the fact that she is Preeta’s daughter and she is in love with Shyam. A completely transformed Radha with her luxurious life-style create some doubt in Shyam as to whether he would be able to match her requirements.

Geeta discovers through an ashram inmate that Rai Saheb is none other than Raju who has a habit of exploiting women. She is apprehensive about Radha being exploited by him. One day, Radha calls Rao Saheb as Daddy and he gets angry on her. He warns her that she should continue to call him as Rai Saheb. Shocked by the behaviour of Rai Saheb, Radha pays a visit to Geeta and tells the incidence. At that time, Geeta reveals to Radha the true identity of Rai Saheb who was in love with her mother but for the sake of the family, she sacrificed her love. Radha feels that she should get married to Raju as a compensation for her mother’s action.

In between, Shyam meets Geeta and reveals to her that he and Radha are in love but Radha has decided to marry Rai Saheb. Geeta visits Rai Saheb’s house disguised as a man. She presents some photos of his exploitations with women, some of whom have become the inmates of the ashram. She warns him to reform otherwise the inmates of the ashram would make his life miserable. Still, Rai Saheb goes ahead with the preparation of his marriage with Radha. When it becomes certain that Rai Saheb is going ahead with his marriage, Geeta, disguised as a man, reveals herself as Geeta and tells Rai Saheb that Radha is the daughter of Preeta who is no more. His immediate reaction is that her relationship with Radha does not affect as she is not his daughter. Before leaving Geeta reminds Rai Saheb that he has treated Radha like his daughter. With this comment, Rai Saheb’s conscious pricks him.

On the day of the marriage, it is a pleasant surprise for Radha that the bridegroom whose face is covered with flowers turnout to be Shyam when she sees him after the marriage. Geeta, who has attended the marriage, meets Rai Saheb and thanks him for what is has done for Radha. She reveals to him she will stay with him permanently to ensure that he does not stray again in criminal life and the exploitation of women. The film ends with Raju accepting Geeta as his companion.

The film had five songs written by Verma Malik which were set to music by Madan Mohan. One song has been covered on the Blog. I present the second song, ‘subah dupaharee shaam savere’, rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for Jaishree T, Padma Khanna, Faryal, Bindu and again for Jayshree T. I thought that probably this may be a record for Asha Bhosle to give playback for four dancer-actress in a single song. But after some research, I came to know that Asha Bhosle has given playback for four dancer-actresses in ‘Dharma’ (1973) in the song, arey saaqee jo kee hai bachee baakee – Faryal, Sonia Sahni, Jaishree T and Bindu.

The context of the song is that after taking over the business of Rai Saheb (Dev Kumar), Raju (Feroz Khan), the new Rai Saheb, treats himself with a lavish lifestyle which includes visiting courtesans to develop relationship with them in keeping with his vow to treat women as playmates. First four stanzas of the song are picturised on four different dancers as listed above. Once again, Jayshree T performs dance on the 5th stanza of the song. The different dancers in the song signify Raju’s visits to different courtesans. When the 5th stanza of the song is in progress, an aged madam of the kotha is also seen in a few shots and I am certain that she is Meena T. though her name does not figure in the credit titles of the film.
