The coincidence that we arrive at today, was indicated to me by Mahesh ji about 10 days back. And after some back and forth explanations, discussions and negotiations, the editors agreed to designate today as a dual century milestone day.

Yes, we arrive at the 6600th day of continuous musical disbursal of Hindi film songs. All numerical analysis and all the performance superlatives can be done and stated, but then that will just be a repetition of what has been told and discussed numerous times in the past. What we are moving towards forward is a glorious ongoing celebration, as always. Neither this ocean of HF music is going to deplete, and nor will the momentum and potential of this musical bandwagon will falter and rest. Miles to go yet, yes, many many more miles to go, but nothing like sleep to pause on the way.

May the journey of this bandwagon be blessed, and may it continue to accumulate the accolades and the bouquets – for the unstinted and the peerless effort anywhere on the world wide web. And come to think of it this way – maybe some will ask this in their minds – what purpose is being served by this endeavor ? Besides of course putting together a massive compilation of Hindi film songs. Well, my answer to that is – this venture, this so appropriately and so truly designated as a labor of love – it is the ongoing honoring of the stalwarts – both big and small, both popular and anonymous, both celebrated and neglected – the stalwarts who spent their lives to feed this oceanic enterprise called the Hindi cinema, and build this vast repository of music. A grandiose legacy that has been bequeathed to this world at large – to entertain, to give an expression to all the human emotions in all their various colors and flavors. Taking the thousand foot view of this enterprise, it is an ongoing humungous project that continues to assimilate, enumerate and generate asseverations of the multitude flavors of human emotions.

Yes, the effort of this bandwagon, led by the fearless leader (who now verily has an enhanced observation vision 🙂 ), is unmatched, is without a peer anywhere on the net. And I am proud and delighted to be part of this effort along with all my comrades in arm, all pitching in with their knowledge and insights into this ocean of music.

6600 days is a huge chunk of life itself. A passage of years that brings on at least two new generations in the human population. And so we continue, to work within this enterprise, crossing generations of time. And to compound the celebration today, we just slid past another massive milestone – the 205th century song to showcased on our blog. But what to say about it – so much has been said before, and I will just be rephrasing the past. But then, one certain thing to be said – that we all doff our caps in salute, and with a minimal pause, the trek continues. As always, the backlog in the pipeline does not allow a breather to relax. Past this 20500th song post, and on to now the next song, the next century song, the next thousandth . . .

I continue, after a gap of some months – the journey to track and catalog the flow of that divine voice that we so lovingly and respectfully call as Mohammed Rafi.

In the previous and first episode that was published as the song “Dupatta Mora Aaj Hi Rang Dijo“, (from film ‘Mansarovar’ of 1946) I had covered first three years of Rafi Sb’s career – from 1944 to 46. With this post I venture into 1947, and see the beginning of this singing voice. With three songs in 1944, then 12 songs in 1945, on to 39 songs in 1946, we come into 1947 and find a recorded list of 28 songs in 16 films, which are listed below.

Listening to this voice in all its different colors, emotions and renditions, the thought goes out to the quality of expression of this voice. I am sure all of us must have come across and viewed the few handful videos live interviews of Rafi Sb. Viewing these videos and hearing him speak, a wondrous thought comes to mind. Listening to his voice in these informal conversations, one is struck by the relaxed soft tones of this voice – so unhurried, so humble. One almost has to strain one’s listening to catch his words. And then the wonder appears in the mind – is this really the voice that has been recorded as “Bhagwaan, Bhagwaan. . . O Duniya Ke Rakhwaale”, or “Baar Baar Dekho, Hazaar Baar Dekho”, or the cresendoing notes of “. . . Inteha Ye Hai Ke Bande Ko Khuda Karta Hai Ishq” in the qawwaali “Na To Karvaan Ki Talash Hai”, and few thousand other sound and emotional variations that we are so used to hearing since childhood. Seriously, it is really a stretch of imagination to equate this humble soft voice in the live interviews, with the wondrous, and sometimes thunderous, variations of rendition that Rafi Sb has produced and presented from within himself. And I keep wondering – is this the same person.

Well, more observations on this topic in the next episode. I am already so drastically late with this post, that I curtail my thoughts – to be continued later.

Today’s song in from the 1947 film ‘Shanti’. The interesting thing about this song is that from the various sources that I could refer, this song belongs to this film. But the peculiar thing is that this song is not listed in the Geet Kosh – not for the film ‘Shanti’ or for any other film. I would like to hear from knowledgeable readers and listeners about the veracity of this information.

‘Shanti’ is a production from the banner of Firdaus Art Productions, and is directed by SU Sunny. The ten (or eleven) songs of this film are penned by Shakeel Badayuni and are composed by BS Thakur. The latter name is not very familiar, and from the HFGK listing, ‘Shanti’ seems to be the sole picture for which he is identified as the music director.

A philosophical song, that tells about the impending event in everyone’s life. And the message it brings home is ‘Hanste Hanste Jaana. . . ” – carry a smile on your face when you take the final journey to the other world.

Rafi Sb’s voice, in this song, sounds so familiar and so mature already. Very similar to the voice we are so used to listening in the songs of 1950s and 60s. Listen and judge for yourself.
